Who is the antagonist, or the person who causes the conflict for the protagonist? What is he like?
The poet's voice need not merely be the record of man, it can be one of the props, the pillars to help him endure and prevail. (excerpt-Faulkner's Nobel Prize acceptance speech)
My first impression of Cash was that he was a hardworking man. He spent most of the day working on the coffin for his mother. He seemed very selfless as he worked constantly on his mother’s coffin. Although the fact that he was building the coffin right outside his mothers window was somewhat disturbing to me. I would not want to watch a man build my coffin. To Cash this coffin was his last present to his dying mother and he wanted it to be perfect witch is why he would hold up every piece to show his mother to make sure it was perfect.
In this section, identify and discuss the antagonist (person, group, or force that creates conflict for the protagonist). Explain how the antagonist impedes the protagonist’s goals or creates problems for the protagonist. How is the antagonist a problem for the protagonist?
At a mere glance, William Faulkner's southern gothic novel, “As I Lay Dying” appears to be a book about a mourning family, who desperately longs to put their mother’s soul to rest in her desired burial ground. Although, Thomas C. Foster's novel “How to read Literature like A Professor” reveals that you do not need a microscope to find hidden literary elements, that aid in developing the novel’s theme and tone it wishes to undertake. After reading “As I lay Dying”, there are many elements that contribute to the overall composition of the book, such as his exemplary usage of symbolism, weather, plotline, and allusions to convey a gruesome tone.
William Faulkner in his book, As I Lay Dying, portrays a Mississippi family which goes through many hardships and struggles. Faulkner uses imagery to illustrate an array of central themes such as the conscious being or existence and poverty among many others. From the first monologue, you will find an indulgence of sensual appeal, a strong aspect of the novel. Each character grows stronger and stronger each passage. One of the themes in As I Lay Dying is a human's relations to nature. Faulkner uses imagery to produce a sense of relation between animals and humans.
A Lesson Before Dying, a historical fiction novel set in the 1940s, is written by Ernest J. Gaines. In this novel the reader gets to experience the struggles of a twenty-one year old black man by the name of Jefferson. Jefferson finds himself the sole survivor in a liquor store shooting. Although he is an innocent man, he is found guilty of murder and because of the racist era, he is sentenced to death. Determined to morph Jefferson into a man with dignity before his death, Miss Emma, Jefferson’s godmother reaches out to Grant Wiggins, a teacher at a local school. Although Grant isn’t sure he can do anything for Jefferson, he agrees to visit him in jail. As the days to Jefferson’s execution wane, Grant and Jefferson form a bond that ends up bettering both men.

In the book As I Lay Dying by William Falkner. The mother, Addie, is dying and she wants to make sure her dying request is fulfilled. She wants to be buried with her family in a nearby town called Jefferson. She also want her coffin to be well built so Cash, her son, builds the coffin right outside her window. When she dies the family starts their expedition to bury her.
Grief causes people to turn on each other. In As I Lay Dying, William Faulkner’s use of stream of consciousness narration demonstrates the Kübbler-Ross model of processing grief through the minds of the Bundren family, especially with the youngest children, seventeen-year-old Dewey Dell and six-year-old Vardaman, after the recent death of Addie, their mother. The Kübbler-Ross model of processing grief has five stages (in no particular order): denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. The anger stage is when the person finds fault in others and can include selfish behavior. Dewey Dell and Vardaman turn on others throughout the book.
An archetypal journey may be defined as one where a hero or set of heroes is faced with unexpected trials and misfortunes. An example of such a journey would be Faulkner’s story, As I Lay Dying. In this story, the unstable Bundren family board on a journey to Jefferson in order to keep their mother’s promise of being buried with her own people. The family faces many challenging obstacles, but reach their destination by the end. Similarly, in Dayton and Faris’s Little Miss Sunshine, the dysfunctional Hoover family embark on a journey to California in order to fulfill Olive’s dream to compete in the final beauty pageant. Along the way, the Hoovers encounter many mishaps, breakdowns, but also learn many lessons to reach their goal. Using Faulkner’s
All living beings promise one thing when they are born and set in existence; that they will live and then after they have exercised their temporal being they sign off to death. The contract of a human being’s life is that it comes with mortality, so we do as much as we can in
In "As I Lay Dying" William Faulkner uses multiple points of view to explore the theme of existence as a motionless and meaningless cycle. The cycle is motionless because it is inescapable and unchangeable. One can never leave the cycle of life and death. People perpetuate the cycle by creating life, but in creating life they are creating death, for life irrevocably leads to death. Faulkner depicts existence as meaningless. Nothing really changes in the story. On the surface the characters appear to change, such as Addie dying, Darl going crazy and Anse getting a new wife, but none of these changes are really as relevant as they seem.
