Aspen And Pine Trees

The Canadian Shield has many forests, within those forests are a lot of trees. Mostly trees grow in the Shield. The types of trees that are found are birch, aspen, hemlock, pine and balsan. The trees listed are found in the southern parts of the Shield. There is also tamarack, black spruce and white spruce trees are in the forests of the Shield, a lot of the forests in the shield have a mix of many trees.

Every forest has a story to tell. By looking closely at its habitants, that story can be interpreted. Much of this narrative is written in the trees: their age, their tolerance to shade, and the rate at which they grow are all characteristics that can imply a lot about their environment. Exploring these relationships and how they connect with each other can indicate the health and history of the land. Heiberg Forest, located in northern New York, was once used for agricultural purposes in the 1800-1900’s. (Nowak, Lecture Notes) Much of the land once used for farming was left to regrow back into a young forest. The life history of different tree species can be determined by examining the most common species in Heiberg.

Paul Celan’s poem, Aspen Tree, is simple and direct in terms of focusing on the topic of death. It was especially interesting to read because of how Celan compares the actions of the Aspen Tree and his mother. This is evidently clear when he states that “Rain cloud, above the well do you hover?/My quiet mother weeps for everyone.”(Celan 5-6) Furthermore, this powerful imagery shows the rain cloud hovering above the well, which may represent the well’s water be dried up with sorrow. Additionally, the “rain cloud” symbolizes pain and tears which connects to the next line of the poem. His mother’s death increases the amount of tears from the well to the sky and thus expanding the rain cloud. I found that particularly odd since generally speaking,

There are pine trees just about everywhere in Georgia. Pine trees have always been important resources to people in North America. Native Americans used pine trees as treatments for respiratory conditions and to build items such as canoes or buildings. Today, pine trees are one the most important timber sources in North America. Pine trees belong to a group of trees known as the conifers, meaning the trees have cones and needle-like or scale-like leaves. There are about seven very common types of pine trees found in Georgia that grow in several different environments from the Appalachian Mountains all the way to the coast. Over many years pine trees have adapted to these very diverse environments.

The three-needled Rocky Mountain ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa var. scopulorum) is the prevalent form of pine throughout the Colorado Plateau. Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii) is commonly associated with the ponderosa pine at lower elevations as well as the New Mexico locust (Robina neomexicana). At higher elevations it shares habitat with southwestern white pine (Pinus strobiformis), Rocky Mountain white fir (Abies concolor var. concolor), Rocky Mountain Douglas-fir, (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca), and quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides). Understory plants which are commonly found in these forests include grasses such as mountain muhly and Arizona fescue, forbs such as lupine, as well as apache plume, buckbrush, currant, and cliffrose.

Maple trees are native to Asia but can also be found in Europe, Africa and North America. There are about 128 species of maple tree. The wood from maple trees is classified as a hardwood, which means that it is dense and relatively dry when compared to the wood from softwoods. Virginia Pine (Pinus virginiana Mill), once called a weed or scrub pine, now has its place alongside trees with commercial importance (Carter and Snow Jr. 1990). Virginia pine is a coniferous tree species native to North America that can be found in seventeen states which extends from southern New Jersey down to Northern Georgia and Northern Alabama (Sullivan 1993). Its range also extends from southern Ohio to South Carolina. Some common ecosystem communities that Virginia pine can be found in includes longleaf (Pinus palustris)-slash pine (Pinus elliottii) communities, loblolly pine (Pinus taeda)-shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata) communities, oak (Quercus spp.)-pine communities, and oak-hickory (Carya spp.) communities.

Hunting, if done in moderation, has some very positive effects on the High Pine Ecosystem. One of the main ways it helps the ecosystem is that it helps with population control. Another argument for benefiting the ecosystem is that the money made by selling licenses to hunters can be used to help the ecosystem. Hunting can also be used in the elimination of invasive species such as wild hog. Hunting is a national pastime that has, at times, hurt the environment, but if done in moderation and regulation can be very beneficial.

This is because the trees grow fairly tall and straight which makes it easier to cut long, straight planks. Because of the easy manufacturing, this type of wood comes very cheap. Most softwood is used for indoor furniture, or decoration. Some types of softwood trees are: pine, spruce, cedar, and redwood. These trees decay faster for the same reason they are easily manufactured. Manufacturers put several layers of paint on some of the trees. This is one factor that contributes in preventing decay.
