“ When you invest your time, you make a goal and a decision of something that you want to accomplish. Whether it's make good grades in school, be a good athlete, be a good person, go down and do some community service and help somebody who's in need, whatever it is you choose to do, you're investing your time in that.” was said by Nick Saban. This is reminiscent of the hard times students athletes face. That sports don't help keep your grades up with these three reasons. First, a student could be failing all their tests and get a hundred percent on homework and still get to play. Second, due to sports, athletes may have to skip school which could cause them to get behind in their schoolwork. The third reason is a classmates would have to put …show more content…
Their playing ability, should not be fully relied on. You would have to play basketball or football at Division I or II levels, that will only receive half an athletic scholarships to a school. There are not enough scholarships to give every student a full-athletic scholarships. Most athletes would not get a scholarships, or even a coach might give the players a half of an athletic scholarships, so they can get more players that they are willing to have it. It’s imperative to get good grades so they can at least get a partial academic scholarship. Having good grades gives many financial benefits to the students. This would be a privilege to have especially where they would have trouble affording college.A half of an athletic scholarship combined with the other half of the merit money can equal to having a full scholarship.” They would fail the test and could pass the homework and still get to play the sport. They are too busy doing sports and not focusing on school. The student could also short change themselves in the health department because of lack of sleep. As a student in this situation and because of my experience I believe that academics and sports can be combined, it is true. But it is very difficult to keep the grades up and to keep playing the
High school sports make student athletes strive for better success in their education. Sure some Schools have a minimum G.P.A requirement of 2.0, and to get that all your classes have to be “C” or better. Well that’s better than letting them have a 1.0 and letting them play. It makes them have something worth studying for, For example my friend Bryan Garcia does not like school or work but he is always looking for ways to make his grades better so that he may play with the John F. Kennedy soccer team. Also not all the states in the United States of America have a G.P.A requirement to play in a sport activity, twelve out of the fifty states in the USA require a G.P.A to play."A High School Athlete 's GPA Vs. Average High School Student 's GPA." Everyday Life. N.p., n.d. Web. 06 Feb. 2016.”Sports participation is associated with higher GPAs, lower dropout rates and stronger commitments to school compared to the average,non-athlete high school student”. Also they made a study for Kansas in 2008-2009 between athletes and non-athletes,Academic Performance Of Athletes And Non‐Athletes, and Page 41. COMPARING THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES AND NON-ATHLETES IN KANSAS IN 2008-2009 (n.d.): n. pag. Web.”high school athletes earned higher grades, graduated at a higher rate, dropped out of school less frequently, and scored higher on state assessments than did non-athletes”. Student athletes have a greater chance of graduating with a 3.0 or more. They are more
Bowen and Greene discuss a variety of causes for and against sports and academics. One point they mention is the schools budget and where the finical resources are better needed. It also brings in statistics of studies and findings of other articles such as winning percentages and academic attainment, and sports participation and academic achievement. Both help my opinion on why students need should have good grades in order to play sports.
While supporting themselves in the meantime. This can create a mental strain on the athletes to get all accomplished that needs to be. The school continues to press their athletes to make the grades so that they can play in the games a produce revenue for the school, that the athletes never see a legal dime of. When schools try and assist their athletes in accomplishing their tasks, they have received an outcry of critique.
Another thing is that being a student-athlete brings personal responsibility. They know that they need to meet certain academic standards they must meet in order to play in the games and practice. However that reasonability causes them to push themselves and do better than students who do not participate in sports. A study published in the Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise in August 2007 said that students who were active in sports performed 10 percent better in core subjects (math science, social studies and language arts) than those who were not active in sports. (Chen) This type of academic improvement does not just happen. There are a number of roles that
Since some students worry too much on athletics they say “I will do it later” then they get tired and put off homework. When Students get fatigued they feel sluggish, and when they don’t do homework their grades drop. Some athletics can seriously injure
Why do the students in sports continue to get the grades they are getting? Students are not getting enough time to get all their work done at night after school and practice or a game. Daniella Grover from the Talon states, “Studies
One way for an athlete to succeed in studying and doing homework is to make time to work. Some say they don’t have the time to study or do homework outside of school. In most cases, they didn’t try to make time to do their work at home. They could have taken time from sleeping or playing video games less to work. Therefor athlete has made time to work on their sport, so they should also
In order to participate in team sports, students must meet requirements established by the state and other athletic governing bodies. For many athletes, it is the only area they excel in but realize their ability to continue to play depends upon their making the grade. Maintaining passing academic grades help students receive academic or athletic scholarships to other schools. Academics play an important role because it provides the students with knowledge to read comprehend and utilize the information, which may be used in higher learning but also completing job applications, employment and everyday living activities. Sports combined with academics can make the difference in so many different ways both in and outside of the classroom.
Anybody who plays a sport knows how it affects their grades and how difficult it is to keep them up without having tons of stress and pressure on them. In an article, written by Amanda Ripley, states that at a school named Permont, studies show that 30% more students passed their classes when there was no sports rather than when there was (11). Nathan, a student at Permont and former quarterback, says that he had plenty of extra time and he never got behind on his work, after he stopped playing in school sports and began playing club football on the weekends (Ripley, 11). I think that the parents of the students should’ve payed more attention and noticed that their child wasn’t doing so well in school and took them out of the
In today 's society, education is the key to success. Without the proper foundation of education, the chances of earning financial stability and maintaining the basic skills of survival decreases. This is why children are encouraged to attend school. When it comes to athletics, when that’s student does not have the grades they are often, banned from playing in a particular game. In the movie Hoop Dreams, both Arthur and William faced challenges when it came to maintaining their grades alongside being a student athlete. In fact, Arthur had to graduate in the summer due to his grades and credits not lacking the requirements for him to graduate on time. Therefore, a student must learn to balance both the sport they are participating in as well as their academic success. Sports can often result in a decrease of grades for several student athletes, and affect their academic success for future endeavors
Being an athlete can be hard or just inconvenient with have long school days. The athlete could be hurt educationally{not having a good grade, ect.} Most of the time students will be too tired to try and might lose time on the field for lacking effort in practice. A student can also be too tired or not have enough time, depending on how long practices are, to do homework. School is supposed to provide education but if a student is not doing homework due to long school days and practice right after, he/she will not be able to maintain a good grade due to the fact of not completing their assignments.A student might not even be able to study properly causing them to lack information needed to pass a test or quiz. In HHS, if someone were to be
Are athletics truly the cause of students not succeeding in school? Several studies have shown that this is not the case. For example, for those students who participate in athletics, they are likely to continue to have a more improved lifestyle in the future, physically and mentally. When sports were once taken from schools, students couldn’t handle themselves, so sports are very important to kids. Not only that, their more active brains are shown to have better standardized testing scores. However, many feel that America’s test scores are lower than other nations because of the heavy focus on sports. Athletics are not the one and only cause to blame for students in schools, because the positive effects outweigh the negatives by far.
Students play sports for many different reasons (e.g. pay for college tuition, stay in shape, be social.) Although some reasons of playing are good there are many aspects of high school sports that students and parents don’t spend enough time thinking about (e.g. pros and cons of high school sports.) Being an athlete in high school teaches you many things (e.g. character building, socialization, sportsmanship, live a healthier lifestyle, college preparation, ect.) Along with positive aspects of being a student athlete in high school, there are also negative ones (e.g. injuries, lack of free time, pressure, not focusing on school.)
Being a student at this school, I have realized that a large percentage of students that attend our school play city league football. This means that if our school decides to add football as a sport, we will have a large amount of students on the team. Having a lot of students on the team, also means that a large amount of students are trying to succeed academically. There are a lot students that love football, and will do anything to stay on the field, including keeping their grades up. Even after the football season passes they will still have gained the habit of academic discipline. Football may even push the students to strive for success grade wise for the rest of their academic career. As one article states (“Bliss, K. (2017). Does
Games are away as well. Student athletes spend hours on a bus traveling to an away game. This is very time consuming. Student athletes get home late from games and are usually ready for bed to have enough sleep to be able to get up for school or class the next day. These two examples clearly show that athletics take up a lot of time which could be used studying or doing homework. If they are not studying or turning in their homework, their grades begin to slip for the reason that they are either one, not prepared for their upcoming test or two, they are just getting zeros on assignments because they did not have the time to do them. Also, they are exhausted from practices, games and training so they are not fully focused on their school work due to exhaustion.
