It was 20 years after my wife was attacked walking home from a pageant. I am sitting in the living room of our little house. Our two kids, Nancy and Frank, are sitting on the floor playing with their new toys that they got for christmas. Nancy is my nine year old, stubborn little girl who is just like her mother. She prefers to hang out with boys instead of girls. Sometimes, I wonder if one of the boys she hangs out with will be her husband when the time comes. Every time they come over I always tell them to protect my little girl and to be safe. My wife Jean Louise, or Scout as people call her, is laying on the bed reading a book. It has been really hard for her to move these last few days, due to the pregnancy of our next little boy. We have decided to honor both of our childhood heros. His name will be Arthor Atticus Harris. …show more content…
Both Frank and Nancy jumped up and ran to the phone.
“ I got it honey” I yelled. As I said hello into the phone I tried to quiet my kids. I was expecting Atticus to be at the other end because he was the only one who called us. To my surprise it was a lady from the Maycomb County hospital.
“Is this the Daughter of Atticus Finch” she asked.
I responded, “ This is Dill her husband. Is there a problem?”
“I have called to inform you on the death of Atticus Finch. His son found him on his kitchen floor, at 11am. He was foaming at the mouth.” The shock went through my whole body. I almost dropped the Phone. “How?” I asked.
“I am sorry sir, unless you are immediate family, I cannot expose that information.”
When I finally got off the phone after five minutes of arguing, I decided to call Jem to find out what happened before I told Scout.
“Daddy, what's wrong?” asked Nancy. I had completely forgotten that my kids were standing
After Jem, Dill and I almost got shot on the Radley’s porch. Jem got stuck at the fence. His pants seemed to be stuck on one of the wires. He had no choice but to kick off his pants if he didn’t want to get caught. We all knew if we didn’t get to where all the neighbors where standing they would have of suspected us. So we ran over to where they were. Mr. Nathan was standing inside his gate with a shotgun. Atticus was standing beside Miss Maudie and Miss Stephanie Crawford. It was getting dark so we all had to go back in our houses and go to bed. I heard a squeak from Jem’s bed. “Jem, what are you doing”. “I am going back to the fence to get my pant before someone else finds them” Jem stated. I knew there was no use in arguing because it would
First Mr. Tate and a group of men came to Atticus’ house to talk to him. Then Atticus went to the jail in the middle of the night to protect Tom Robinson. While he was there, a mob of men including Mr. Walter Cunningham circled around Atticus. Mr. Underwood even had to be inside armed with shotgun.
“Careful now, Scout” Atticus stopped me, “His left arm is badly hurt at the elbow”
In the community of Maycomb Atticus is criticized by the way he talks to people and how responsible he could be. When Atticus had called Mayela ma'am and Ms. Mayella got offended. She became offended because she thought atticus was mocking her, she had criticized him for the way he talked to her. The way he was talking to her he was trying to show respect and was trying to be respectful to Mayella. "I got somethin' to say an' then I ain't gonna say no more. That nigger yonder took advantage of me an' if you fine fancy gentlemen don't wanta do nothin' about it then you're all yellow stinkin' cowards, stinkin' cowards, the lot of you. Your fancy airs don't come to nothin'—your ma'amin' and Miss Mayellerin' don't come to nothin', Mr. Finch-" This quote shows that Mayella is somewhat offended by Atticus calling her ma'am and that she doesn't expect much of him.
In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus is the “mockingbird” of the story in that he is “killed” when other people are against his harmless “singing”. This is so because he innocently read with Scout at night against Miss Caroline’s will, he clearly had the upper side of evidence in the Tom Robinson trial yet still lost, and he persisted Aunt Alexandra’s blatant request of firing Calpurnia in order for her to be the housekeeper. All three of these reasons help to prove that he indeed took on such a role in the plot.
Atticus Finch was the deadest shot in Maycomb County in his time. " This quote shows the readers that physical courage tend to be rewarded by admiration such as positive comments. However, Atticus dismisses these comments, "Didn't you know that your daddy's... Hush, Heck, said Atticus, let's go back to town. " As a result, his son Jem, makes the conclusion that, "I reckon if he'd wanted us to know it, he'da told us.
Closing Remarks In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch, the main character's father makes his closing remarks to the jury before they decide Tom Robinson's fate. In Atticus's summation speech he uses four literary devices in an attempt to make an effective speech to the jury which are diction, syntax, imagery, and irony. He combines those four literary elements in his speech to undertake the task of attempting to persuade the jury to put aside their prejudice toward Tom Robinson and justly give Tom robinson the verdict he deserves.
Power, it is something that everyone wants, it classifies us. “To Kill a Mockingbird” is about a powerless black man, Tom Robinson, accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. Because of Mayella’s class and gender she is powerless, but her race makes her have a little more power.
In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, the atmosphere of discrimination normalizes the use of slurs, and the ostracization of certain members of the community, for the children in the novel. To Kill A Mockingbird, written in 1960, set in the fictitious town of Maycomb, Alabama. This novel, from the perspective of the character Scout, is a tale of identity, injustice, and inequality in a time of heavy discrimination. In Lee’s novel, the use of slurs is a common occurrence in the town of Maycomb. Scout, as well as the other children in the novel, are exposed to adults and their peers using these slurs, and, consequently, slurs become a desensitized part of everyday language. From the beginning of the novel, Boo Radley is an enigma to Scout,
“ People generally see what they look for and hear what they listen for.” by Atticus Finch. Atticus Finch is just one example used by the Author Harper Lee in the book To Kill a Mockingbird. There are many powerful people in this book but some of the best are the quiet but impactful ones. They have many opportunities to speak up and share their opinions like everyone else but instead choose to stand out and say it in their own ways. The quietest people are often the most powerful. Some people might disagree and say because they are quit they don’t have anything good or powerful to say.
Heavenly Treasures Atticus Finch, one of the main characters in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, displays many positive personality traits. A widower and gentle father of two children, Scout and Jem, Atticus not only treats his family with fairness, but his friends and neighbors as well. An African American man in their community has been accused of a rape crime. Atticus feels strongly that the man’s innocence will prevail. Since Atticus is a lawyer, he decides he must do the right thing.
Well, the basic message is that this quote lies in life lessons and responsibilities. Atticus wants to teach this lesson to younger audiences. The quote has the fact that people can't live with himself or herself. So, a person who doesn't live by their own beliefs will be taken over by their own mind or consciousness.
Although innocent beings should not be harmed, they are often treated unfairly. Harper Lee uses symbolism in To Kill A Mockingbird to prove the immorality of harming an innocent being. Throughout the book, Tom Robinson, Boo Radley and Atticus Finch are used to represent the ‘mockingbird’ and how it should be defended.
Martin Luther King Jr. famously said “I have a dream, that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character”. Even though Atticus Finch is not black, he still thinks they same way as Martin Luther King Jr. and still wants the same for his children: a society with equality for all races. In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, he delivers a persuasive speech in order to free an innocent black man. Even though he does not win the case, Atticus succeeds in making an impact on the future of racism in Maycomb. By using logic in his closing speech, Atticus forces the town to examine their awareness of the prejudice in their own lives.
I could tell from his anxious and distant eyes and his trudging footsteps that something had gone wrong. It reminded me of him coming home after the Robinson trial. His frustration and defeat were foreign to me. He had been suffering since the case made its way close to his heart - although he would never admit to it. The house now lacked the warmth it once radiated. Atticus has been spending all his hours in that little office of his and the poor children had so little time with their father. They were always eager to see him, but since Atticus’s assignment to Tom Robinson’s case, they have met only their father’s sheer fatigue and his desire to be isolated. Jean Louise especially had been missing her night readings with Atticus. The girl waited for him each night, only to be left
