Augustus A Good Leader

Augustus was one of the main leaders during Pax Romana. His Rule was from 27 BC to 28 AD. He was one of the most important rulers in history because he helped to expand border and make peace for Rome. The Roman Empire was described as an autocratic government.

To answer the question of whether or not Augustus was a good leader, his character and actions must be looked at over the sum of his life. The leadership traits of respect, generosity, fairness, compassion, fearlessness, humility, sensitivity, and innovation appear in The Annals, Lives of the Twelve Caesars, The Deeds of The Divine Augustus and the class textbook. Augustus demonstrated all of these attributes during his 51-year reign as emperor from 63 BCE to 14 CE. However, he was not without fault as he also conducted himself in a less than worthy manner at times. Augustus was not a perfect leader but he matured into a man who was respected and obeyed during life and is still studied almost 2000 years after his death.

On his deathbed, Augustus quoted a playwright by saying “Since well I’ve played my part, all clap your hands and from the stage dismiss me with applause,” Augustus indeed deserves this applause he played not only his ‘part’ masterfully but acted as the playwright himself organizing all those closest to him into their own roles. Leaders are necessary because they need to show leadership amongst the people and unite the people as one doing anything to keep them safe. Augustus, formerly known as Octavius, was born September 23, 63 BC and died August 19, 14 AD. His father was a senator in Rome, but died when Augustus was only 4 years old. Julius Caesar adopted him from his mother, Atai. She was Julius’ sister’s daughter. He changed his name to Octavian. Because he got to grow up with Julius Caesar, he gained a lot of his skill and knowledge. He also got to be Caesar’s heir.

Roman portraiture was one of the most significant periods in the development of portrait art. The characteristics of Roman portraitures are more modest, realistic, idealized, and natural. Also, the body compositions, muscles and facial expressions of portraits and sculptures are more advanced. Many roman portraits are directly linked to specific individuals, such as gods and emperors. They were often used for propaganda purposes and included ideological messages in the pose, accoutrements, or costume of the figure.

Augustus Caesar, the grand-nephew of Julius Caesar, was to be king after Julius’ assassination, but many people didn’t agree that he was fit for the position because he wasn’t Julius’ son. After Augustus Caesar fought against Marc Antony to become the ruler of the Roman Empire, he worked with the Senate to help the Empire enter into Pax Romana. Augustus Caesar became a hero in Rome because he courageously fought and won a war against Marc Antony, another person who wanted to become ruler, earned the respect from the Senate and the citizens, and helped the empire to prosper, even after his death.. After becoming the emperor of Rome, Augustus Caesar gains his respect through many hardships. The Roman Empire went through an era of peace and prosperity and helped with the innovations of the empire with the help of him. Augustus was the first emperor, and founder, of the Roman Empire. He was a generous leader, and had a sense of caution in mind with every decision. His document, Res Gestae Divi Augusti, notes all of his accomplishments during his reign. He established an especially impressive army during his time. In the first paragraph, he introduces the beginning of his kingship, “In my nineteenth year… I raised an army with which I set free the state, which was oppressed by the domination of a faction” (Res Gestae Divi Augusti, 1). In the second to fourteenth paragraphs he touches on the politics of his career and the events that transpired. In paragraphs fifteen through twenty-four, he notes his donations of money, land, public works, ect. Paragraphs twenty-five through thirty-three take his military and alliances into account. In the final two paragraphs, thirty-four and thirty-five, he discusses Roman people’s assessment of his reign. Augustus was a very powerful leader with his well planned strategies, and made the people of Rome very proud.

Augustus is known by many for his successful rule over the Roman Empire and the extended periods of peace during his reign. However, little is known about his role as a political strategist that aided his rise to power. Augustus used various strategies to ensure his military strength yet still maintain favor with the people as discussed below.

According to many historians Augustus was not only the first emperor of Rome but also the greatest. During his long and impressive career Augustus dissolved the faulty governmental system of the Republic and created a new basis of Roman government that stood for three centuries. On his death bed Augustus was purported to have said: “Did I play my part well?” Through examination of his reforms of the Roman tax and legal system, as well as his role in creating the Pax Romana and a stable military it is evident that Augustus’s reing and reformes was a good thing.

I'm going to be writing about the life of Augustus. I chose to write about his life because he was a strong and powerful leader. Even Though Rome had many emperors, but Augustus is one of the well known emperor. He took Rome away from Mark and the government from a Republic government. He moved the capitol to a new location to make it harder for people to attack. He rebuild the city after the civil war and made so improvements as well. His death was long, but he was well taken care of. Augustus accomplished many things when he ruled as emperor, some of those things are taking over Rome, changing the government, rebuilding Rome, and changing the capitol.

Another subsequent source that helps debunk the theory of Augustus’ undivided leadership is from Dio Cassius’s Roman History. This is principally accomplished as Cassius Dio, like Tacitus, mainly focusses on Augustus’s single-minded need for power in relation to the rights granted by a high majority of the people and the senate. However despite this, Cassius Dio declares that, “Caesar himself was destined to have absolute control of all matters for all time, because he was not only master of the funds but also commanded the soldiers…” Through this declaration provided by Cassius Dio, it can be interpreted that through becoming a part of the military command Augustus could immediately have access to power as there was a high amount of money

I chose to do my research paper on Augustus Caesar. The reason I chose him is because there are few people in history to reach his level of dominance and authority that he possessed. It was over two thousand years ago and his name is still very well known in history. He left his mark on history like very few people that have ever live. In this research paper, I will first write about his story to leadership and how he abstained power. Following this will be an in depth breakdown of his leadership style and how he chose to lead others.

Augustus, during his reign as emperor proved effective in ruling through the ideas he implemented to solidify his country. Tacitus stated “nullo adversante” which translates into English “Wholly unopposed” (http://janusquirinus.org/Quotes/QuotesHome.html) this identifies the effectiveness of his reign and the strength he had politically over Rome. Important actions such as the creation of religious and moral reforms, the constitutional agreement and the implementation of the building programme all succeeded in creating stability within the Roman Empire.
