4 May, 2017 Barbara Park The modern author I have chosen to do research on is the late Barbara Park. I chose Barbara because she wrote a series of New York Times Bestseller books that brightened my childhood called “Junie B. Jones”. Barbara Park died at the age 66, on November 15, 2013 after an over seven-year battle with ovarian cancer. She left behind her husband, Richard Park, and two biological sons named David and Steven. She attended Rancocas Valley Regional High School in Mount Holly Township. As a kid, she was sent to the principal a lot for talking and for being the class clown. She attended Rider college in her home state New Jersey for two years and planned to become a teacher so she got her secondary education degree. But to get her Bachelors she went to the University of Alabama, where she met her husband, and achieved it in political science and history. After a while in teaching she realized that she had developed at love for writing and decided to try it as a side job for extra money. The situations work out as they work out. Sometimes Junie does the wrong thing, and she must pay the price. I think that teachers often try too hard to teach a lesson with literature. And for me, that's not what I see with my books. I would like to see a story discussed, but not with any kind of heavy moral or lesson learned because I don't believe it's the purpose of fictional characters to teach you anything.” Besides some critics, Barbara’s books have had some positives results. She tells a story about a kid who was below level in reading but he liked Junie B Jones books. The teacher decided to help him read them and excelled. It’s an easy read for those who have problems and teachers sometimes uses it to their advantage. She also surprisingly attracted a good amount of boy readers.

The Junie B. Jones series, written by Barbara Park, follows a lively school girl on her journey through life. As most kids are, Junie B. Jones is a little bit naughty at times. Her bad behavior earned Barbara Park a spot on the Top 100 Banned/Challenged Books: 2000-2009, therefore robbing children of the opportunity to enjoy an entertaining book and to learn a valuable lesson through the lovable main character.

Beth Brown is an African American woman who studied astrophysics. Astrophysics is an area of science which applies physical laws discovered on Earth to phenomena throughout the cosmos. Cosmos is the world or universe regarded as an orderly, harmonious system (Dictionary.com). Beth is a very appreciated and inspiring astronomer. An astronomer is an expert in or student of astronomy. She was an inspiration to women and minorities in encouraging them to pursue their careers in astronomy/physics. Beth Brown died at the age of 39 due to a pulmonary embolism. When she died, the astronomical community lost one of its most buoyant and caring individuals (Bregman 1).
Barbara Jordan was born on February 21, 1936 in Houston Texas. She was the youngest child of three. Her father Benjamin Jordan was a Baptist minister and warehouse clerk. Her mother, Arlyne was a maid, housewife and church teacher. Jordan went to college at the University of Texas. She graduated from college being one out of two African American women in her class. Jordan passed away from viral pneumonia on January 17, 1996. Barbara Jordan is a modern here because she is a brave woman, she overcame racism, she is also a civil rights activist.
