Julia Butterfly Hill is an environmentalist and stands up for what she believes is right. Hill is most commonly known for her 738 day tree sit in Luna. By living in a tree for over 2 years hill protested against the clear cutting of the redwood forest. Butterfly, a name given to her from the earth first! Group, sought to prevent deforestation, show the media the PL’s disregard for the environment and educate the public about the role forests play in landslides. Hills civil disobedience. She showed strength and willpower standing up for what she believes is right. Hill saved hundreds for ancient trees from going extinct when a logging company threatened to cut them down. “ We live in a world that is full of problems, and we are the solutions to those problems”. She believed it was her destiny to save the forest. She truly is an inspiration and continues to motivate till today to help better our world. Although she succeeded in saving the trees i feel that the measures she took were a little extreme. She almost ran out of food and water due to the logging company installing guards to cut off her supply and faced lots of extreme weather conditions. Even Though i don't agree with the way she protested i believe it was most definitely worth it. She might have done something too drastic for me but that's what caught the media's attention. By tree sitting she wasn't only saving a few trees she was also focusing the media's attention on the reason she was doing this. She brought the problem to the public's eyes hoping that by doing so they would help her stop deforestation and prevent landslides. As if saving the redwood forest was enough she also protested against San Francisco to help shut their financial district before the invasion of Iraq in
Martin Luther King Jr. is an idol for most people; Rosa Parks was one of them. She admired his bold integrity to stand up for what is right in equality. Dr. King was a light to the world, because people wanted things to change, but they were afraid. They did not want to be arrested or attacked. They could boycott. They could refuse to ride the buses. That would cost the city a lot of money. The city and bus officials would not like that. This was a way Dr. King was standing up for Rosa. I added Dr. King to Rosa’s friends, because I felt he made a great impact on her life. If it weren’t for Martin Luther King’s heroic act in taking charge of the situation, Rosa Parks may have been in jail longer than intended, with a possible worse penalty.
Throughout the African American civil rights movement opportunities were sought to spark a chance at improving conditions in the south. Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat on the Montgomery, Alabama bus was the fire to that spark. Rosa, standing up for herself something anyone person in today’s world would do, was arrested and put in jail. While Rosa was in jail she caught the eye of many people in the Civil Rights Movement, including the leaders. The Civil Rights leaders protested her arrest and hired lawyers to aid her in her trial. Although she was found guilty and was fined fourteen dollars for the cost of the court case, which lasted on thirty minutes, she wasn’t done yet. Rosa Parks has affected the society we live in today in
Amazing how a little girl can make history and contribute so much to society. Despite the things she went through she stayed strong. She is great influence to all of us. Like Bridges says,“Don’t follow the path. Go where there is no path and begin the trail. When you start a new trail equipped with courage, strength and conviction the only thing that can stop you is
Queen Esther Julia Kapiolani Napelakapuokakae, other known Queen Kapiolani, was born on December 31,1834 in Hilo, Hawaii, and died on June 24, 1899 in Waikiki. She was married to David Kalakaua and both of them changed Hawaii. She was a strong and determined civil rights activist who refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white person. She believed in rights for African Americans and had hope for the future she wanted. And when she refused to give up her seat, the bus driver had her arrested. She was later asked about her bold act, and said that “my refusal wasn’t because I was physically tired, but that I was tired of giving in.” Her attitude towards this dilemma sparked a rebellion against the oppression that was put upon African Americans and was called the Montgomery boycott. Which was when the black population of Montgomery boycotted the same bus company that racially discriminated Rosa Parks. This historical event was to be considered victorious, as 40,000 African Americans opted to walk to work instead of riding the bus, some even as far 20 miles. Without Rosa’s optimism today, who knows where we would be? Her optimism has shaped our world for the better by instilling hope for the cure of cancer that plagues this world. Racial
Have you ever thought of how cool it is to be able to sit and watch a movie in which the
Under the soil of the forest there is a huge layer of redwood roots. Roots from a redwood tree may only grow 3 feet down but they can grow up to 20 feet out away from the trunk of the tree. The roots of many redwood trees are grown together any many times, when a tree starts to lean, the thick layer of roots can hold it up. When redwoods start getting cut down this can ruin the layer of roots that covers almost all of the forest. Then redwood trees would not have much support as they do and would be more inclined to fall over. Cutting down redwoods would also lower the chance of reproduction. Redwood trees only reproduce every so often, this process could take over five years. First the redwood drops acorns that fall to the forest floor. Then after some time, a larger type or acorns is dropped and releases pollen which pollinates the first acorn (Hemmerich 2014). Many of the seeds do not grow at all. Only about one in every 200 seeds will grow and become a full sized redwood tree. Of course this process does not happen overnight, it can take up to 100 years for a seed to grow and become a mature redwood tree (Hemmerich 2014).

Josephine Esther Mentzer is a famous entrepreneur because of her wide spread success and starting from nothing. Estee, Josephine Esther, was born in Queens with Hungarian mother and Czech Father. I am Isabel Gardener, a thirteen year-old slave from Rhode Island. I currently work for two Tories in New York, Master and Madam Lockton. Just like you guys who wants independence from Great Britain, I want to be free from the Locktons and not be a slave anymore. Not just me, but many other slaves has been treated really badly by their owners. Ever since I came to New York and started working for the Locktons, I feel the need to request for my freedom because of equality and all the bad things my owner has done to me.
Julia Nackers and her team of eleven dogs will be forever remembered. Julia grew up in a small town near Lake Winnebago, Wisconsin called Sherwood. She was the second of five kids and her family owned many animals. They had rabbits, chickens, cats, and more, but never a dog. When Julia turned eighteen, she bought herself her first Siberian Husky and named the pup Maya. Julia never would have guessed that her Maya would one day become the most widely known lead dog in all of history.
The modern author I have chosen to do research on is the late Barbara Park. I chose Barbara because she wrote a series of New York Times Bestseller books that brightened my childhood called “Junie B. Jones”. Barbara Park died at the age 66, on November 15, 2013 after an over seven-year battle with ovarian cancer. She left behind her husband, Richard Park, and two biological sons named David and Steven. Also, her brother Brooke Tidswell and two grandchildren. It seems that Barbara was an actual funny and kind person in her real everyday life. But she still had a kid heart
Rosa Parks is an amazing example of standing up for the cause. She knew she was supposed to hand over her seat to a white man. She knew that the aftermath of such an act at that time was punishable by jail time. And she did it anyway, for the dream of equal rights to all, no matter the race, color,
“The only tired I was, was tired of giving in” (Parks). I was tired, tired of being oppressed, and tired of being stepped on by the law, and my fellow people. That was the only tired i felt. The Montgomery Bus protest sparked a fire that would be felt throughout the entire country, and it was the spark that ignited the fire of the civil rights movement that shook the world. The boycott was the first of it, once light was shown on the problem, she began travelling cross country spreading information about civil rights, and sparking more peaceful protest. Rosa Parks was an important figure that changed the direction of the United States of America. She was trying to get home from work that day, but she turned into an icon for the civil rights movement, and shined a light on the unfair treatment of african americans.
Redwood trees are coniferous plants, found commonly in California and Oregon as well as several areas of Asia. They are among the tallest trees and can live for thousands of years. Redwoods are considered endangered in some habitats because of issues such as air pollution.
