MMy area of focus for this semester’s Major Project is the Battle of Stalingrad from the Second World War. The two works I have chosen, which are set during this battle, are Stalingrad (2013), a movie directed by Fedor Bondarchuk and War of the Rats, a novel written by David L Robbins. I have a strong interest in history – especially warfare - and had decided to look into the battles of the Second World War when I came upon the Battle of Stalingrad. I never learned about this battle during grade ten History, so I decided to read more about it and became extremely interested. Capturing the city would cut Soviet transport links with southern Russia, and Stalingrad would then serve to anchor the northern flank of the larger German drive into the oil fields of the Caucasus” (Limbach). In addition, taking over this major city named after the Soviet leader, would cause the Russians psychological damage and boost German propaganda. (“The Battle of Stalingrad’s importance”) A large portion of the city was taken over by Germany near the beginning of the war, Hitler’s attempt at taking control over Stalingrad had lasted six months, from July 17th, 1942 to February 2nd, 1943, finally ending with a Soviet victory. (“Battle of Stalingrad”) This victory became a turning point in the war in favour of The Allies- the combined force of The United States of America, Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union -because until this point, Germany had been undefeated.
