Becoming A Counselor, Therapist, Or Psychiatrist

The choices we make early in life have an enormous impact on our future. I have always known that I wanted to directly impact people’s lives and my personal experiences have set me on the school-counseling path. In the future, I would love to influence another generation of students to soar for their dreams.

Often times choosing a career path that is compatible with a persons personality may not be as easy as one might believe it to be. On the other hand, once a person is fortunate to figuer out excaly what career path fit’s their personality, finding the job that best suits there finacial expectations usually becomes less of an mental strain. There are countless careers for all of us to choose from and if you enjoy’s helping those in need you may want to look into becoming a mental health counselor or a clinical social worker. However if you aren’t inerested in being too hands on with individuals in need there are two other careers that one may be interested in, which is Clinical management or Medical and Health management. These four professions are similar but different.

Becoming a mental health counselor wasn't an easy decision to come about. Hard to become prior to choosing to be a mental health counselor I have a desire to be a special-education teacher, specialize in working with children on the asperger's spectrum of autism. The reason I decided to choose to change my professional goals was because I thought as a counselor I will be able to work with children on different disabilities and adults on a one-to-one basis. Dream experience as a preschool teacher, many colleges have said that I have a sense of counseling and understanding when dealing with children and people. My career goals are to become at license professional counselor, license chemical dependency counselor and a certified crisis counselor who specializes in trauma and career counseling. The steps I will take to achieve my career goals are, finish my degree and pass the required exams required by the state of Texas. In addition, I have to take 3, 000 supervised hours for the state of Texas to be license as a professional counselor. Since, I already have my LCDC-I, I just need 4,000 supervised hours to complete my chemical dependency counselor license. My personal growth is; I would like to growth as a professional counselor. I believe that an internship in either Human Services or Health Sciences will be an an exceptional way to see firsthand what I have been reading in textbooks and discussing in class for the last year. I have always had a particular interest in the clinical side of psychology, so given the choice I would like to shadow a practicing professional rather than spend time "behind the scenes" or in a lab, which in turn will give me hands on experience with patients and a better understanding of psychological disorders and issues. During residency, I learned so many things about myself. As I matriculate through school, I have been thinking about my goals. My goal is to ultimately own my own practice. Having the desire to begin a career in psychology I searched far and wide to secure an internship as close to counseling as I could. Since counseling is so delicate when it comes confidentiality it was going to be almost impossible to get a real experience out of an internship here. Many people ask themselves throughout their working career, “what do I want to be when I grow up.” My answer has never wavered since writing a career research paper during my junior year of high school: to become a Licensed Professional Counselor. This career aspiration has been predominantly motivated my desire to help other individuals. Caring and the desire to help others, as well as my community, is the motivation behind my desire to enter this field. When thinking about the need for counselors I initially think back to times of loneliness I experienced when I was younger.

My Dream of Becoming a Mental Health Counselor Becoming a counselor has been a dream for me for some time now. Being able to assist women, men, and children seems like the best job for me due to the empathy that I share with many individuals. A mental health counselor is not just a job, it is an opportunity to help people and give back to the community that we share. As a military spouse who has dealt with multiple deployments and meeting other wives has given me an opportunity to help them get through tough times by hearing people out and providing advice to keep going. Many of the women I have met have children which needed attention and guidance to deal with the hardship that one encounters.

In order to pursue my dream career in being an addictions counselor, I require a higher level of schooling to ensure that I will be doing a good job and be the perfect fit for my clients. There is a lot of courses that one can take in order to be an addictions counselor, but for me I got my eye on three. Firstly, I will need to have more studies in maths, this can be about any high level math class like algebra or business mathematics. For example, Indeed shares that you need to use math to understand how to build successful statistics (Ring). Thus, as an addictions counselor, I must be able to calculate factors like a drugs dosage and what it means to my client quickly in my head. Secondly, I will need to know about alcohol and drug abuse to be an effective counselor, this class is essential to be an addictions counselor.

I have a Masters of Arts in counseling from Maryville University and bachelors of arts from Governors State University. Due to working with youth outreach programs, in mentoring capacities, within hospital and treatment setting, within residential settings, and within higher education I am trained to work with individual and couples of varying abilities. I also have extensive knowledge and sensitivity in working with people with trauma survivors, anxiety and depression, adolescents and families, sexual and gender minorities (BDSM and LGBTQ), and monogamous and polyamorous couples. I have experience working with clients in art therapy, DBT therapy, and in groups.
