Many people ask themselves throughout their working career, “what do I want to be when I grow up.” My answer has never wavered since writing a career research paper during my junior year of high school: to become a Licensed Professional Counselor. This career aspiration has been predominantly motivated my desire to help other individuals. Caring and the desire to help others, as well as my community, is the motivation behind my desire to enter this field. When thinking about the need for counselors I initially think back to times of loneliness I experienced when I was younger. While I knew the source of the loneliness was due to the death of my mother, I found there was only the school guidance counselor available to provide any type of therapeutic …show more content…
My journey to becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor initially began when I obtained my Associates of Applied Science Degree specializing in Mental Health Technologies from Virginia Western Community College. During my time enrolled at the school, I was able to complete an internship at a local psychosocial day program. This internship presented me with the opportunity to facilitate small group sessions and provided interactions with a diversity of clients. Many years later I was able to enroll in Ashford University’s online program to work on my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. A short time after enrolling I was provided the opportunity to advance with my employer with the stipulation I would complete the degree within a specified amount of time. I accepted this challenge and was able to meet the deadline by doubling my course load. I again elected to take a short break from my education due to the tremendous amount of work necessary to obtain my degree, learning the new position with my employer, and the age of my children. I now find myself again ready to concur my education goal and obtain my Master’s Degree. I believe Liberty University is the school to help me achieve my degree and become the best Licensed Counselor I can …show more content…
Each of the employment positions I have been in the behavioral health field and involved direct work with the clients allowing me to gain professional experience. My career choices have also lead me consisted of several positions in the Human Service field. For over ten years I managed a group home for adults with Intellectual Disabilities/Developmental Disabilities. After leaving the employer I began completing mental health skill building support. This allowed for me to gain experience with clients suffering from many different disorders and provided insight into their daily lives. Employment at my latest employer reinforced my desire to become a Licensed Professional Counselor. Most recently my employment has consisted of working with adults to teach skill building. My brief work providing children and adolescents with Intensive In-Home Services allowed me to step into the role of a counselor by means of the model the company chose to provide delivery service. This position amplified my desire to obtain the education required to begin a career in

During and immediately after my undergraduate course, I had the opportunity to work as a volunteer at the American Counseling Association and as a houseparent for an institution that houses mentally ill individuals. The association welcomes students and encourages them to offer voluntary services while they have an opportunity. My experience at the association, as a houseparent, and currently as a paraprofessional for mentally ill adults and children with behavioral problems provided me with a solid footing as well as the necessary resources to prepare for my career in counseling. The experiences gave me an opportunity to attend several conferences and workshops where I had the chance to meet and interact with other professional counselors. These opportunities opened me up and exposed me to numerous challenging situations that helped me to grow both personally and professionally. Interacting with more qualified and experienced people in the association, institution for the mentally ill, and agency that I currently work for has helped me to develop confidence in my work as I sought their assistance and guidance whenever I needed help. The experiences gained while working at the association was helpful to me as I could apply that knowledge and the skills learnt to help my church members. At my church, I was a youth leader and
I have wanted to be a counselor since my freshmen year of high school and in the counseling field there are many specialties that I can focus on. I am fairly certain that I want to specialize in helping people with substance abuse and their families. I have always focused my studies, interests, and work on things that will help me in this field and I have a lot of qualities that help to enhance me in my eventual career. There are difficulties when I get to practice also like what people perceive as correct counseling style, challenges with my gender and race, and finally creating my own counseling style and plans.
I have chosen to enter the field of Mental Health Counseling at this particular time in my life because I would like to learn the skills needed to help people with their life and mental health issues. While attending the University of Saint Joseph during my undergraduate years I took various courses that have led me to making my decision. The courses I took focused on business, biology, social work, and psychology. After graduation I decided to take a year off and gain work experience in customer service and health care. I wanted to experience working with the people in my community. I was hired as a pharmacy technician at a Walgreens in Vernon. Working as a pharmacy technician has been a very rewarding experience for me and I learned a lot about people and their unique needs. I also learned about patient care and how to be pacient and understanding under stressful situations.
Now that I have explained why I am interested the Capella, I will explain how my personality, beliefs, values, thoughts, and experiences influence the way I look at the world in conjunction with my role as a future professional counselor. In general, I receive satisfaction from helping others fix their own problems. As I help others, I observe various outlooks on problems and solutions that I would not have noticed alone. I think that fits with the Wellness Model, which states, “the counselor assesses client’s current functioning in several areas and helps determine which factors are interfering with the individual reaching his/her potential.” I look at my
Counseling has many components in different fields such as a school counselor, marriage and family counseling, addiction counseling, individual and private practices, and many more. For my project, I interviewed Mrs. Ross Freeman, a school counselor who talks about her journey of becoming an Elementary School Counselor. We discuss what the requirement and cost were to receive a license in the counseling field. We were also able to discuss the average salary and hourly wages for a counselor in WISD. Mrs. Freeman then goes on to enlighten me about the rewards, challenges, demands and frustrations of a school counselor.
Counseling is a tool that is widely used by many people. Merriam Webster’s Learner’s Dictionary defines counseling as advice and support that is given to people to help them deal with problems, and make important decisions. This paper examines the career of a Licensed Professional Counselor, the education requirements, certification and licensure levels or requirements, salary, and the future of this profession.
As I started my college career at Tuskegee University, where I double majored in psychology and English. I was passionate about creating social awareness and helping people, but I was unsure what career I was interested in after graduation. I thought about attending graduate school for Counseling Psychology, but I just was not sure about it. I spoke to a professor in the Counselor Education program at Georgia State University and discussed my interests with her. She suggested I look for a program accredited by Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) School Counseling. I enrolled in the School Counseling program at Clark Atlanta
My commitment to my goal of receiving a Master’s degree in counseling has been demonstrated throughout my studies at Rollins by maintaining a GPA of 4.0, my willingness to support my cohort, and by exhibiting an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Although I had retired on a fixed income from a business career due to a disability, I have confirmed my potential, stamina, and desire to counsel through my volunteer work as a guardian advocate, working with people who suffer from addiction, and by remaining an advocate for the LGBTQ community. I have thrived with my undergraduate internship at the Center for Drug Free Living and with my prepracticum at Centaur.
As I become more educated in the field of school counseling, I realize how important previous life experiences are, as well as the skills that I have learn from past jobs, and all through out my academic career. In my life the different roles that I hold, from being a mother, a wife, student, and an employee all contribute to my professional development in some way. Through the experiences in which each role presents it helps me to be able to relate in some way and gives me the ability
As I go down this road which is considered my life. I have realized that I have chosen the path of the person that I am today. My life up to this point was not an easy road and still has bumps in my future. In my past I have faced physical and emotional child abuse from my parents, death of my younger brother at a young age, my house burning down making my family homeless, Department of Family Services placing my brother and sisters into foster homes, and me becoming homeless again while trying finish high school. All of this led to me to joining the Army to realize there were different options in life. Learning from the past hardships is what led me to want to help others figure out to show they also can overcome hardships and that their past does not have to dictate their future. Throughout this paper I am going to take you through my journey by leading you through the concept of counseling as a professional identity, key characteristics of a counselor, duties and functions of the different areas I could pursue as a counselor, then the four career paths I would pursue, followed by the top two career paths I would enjoy, and top two professional settings that I would like to work.
When an individual chooses to pursue a life in the role of a counselor, there are a few items that must be established before one can move forward. These items include the field of counseling to practice, the location to practice in, and a college that offers the desired degree. Once this process has been completed, the next step would be for the individual to adhere to the states' requirements and began the application process to become certified or a licensed counselor. The process to become a counselor is technical as it requires practice and scope, a formal credentialing process, and training to ensure it is effective for clients, counselors, and service providers which will be outlined in these paragraphs.
I have always wanted to be the person others look to when they feel scared or vulnerable. In return for that trust, I have put enormous effort into helping people who seek me out identify their best options for the future. Not until I encountered life in all its confusing, brutal truth, however, did I realize I wanted to occupy that advisor’s role as a professional. My aim in applying to Northwestern is to become a licensed professional counselor in my home state of Wisconsin so that I can help young people tackle everyday problems, learn life skills, and ultimately, be the best people they can be. Ultimately, my goal is to complete a doctorate in counseling psychology, from University of Wisconsin-Madison in particular, after completion of my master’s degree while gaining vital work experience in my field and to use my expertise to train other aspiring professionals in my field.
Using the Career Development Assessment and Counseling (C-DAC) model, which focus on helping clients with concerns through career development, with the Life-Career Rainbow helped me understand how life roles affect my desired career path. If I continue on the route of wanting to pursue a career in clinical counseling, I saw how many of my roles would be limited during the age range of 20s and 30s due to my investment into my education. But starting in my late 40s and 50s, my schedule will allot more time to invest more in my life roles as my career becomes steadier. The rainbow has helped me realize how my decisions in the past and present will affect my involvement in my life roles. It’s important for me to understand how these assessments
