Spartan Warriors worked hard all the time. That’s why they are so muscular and are able to walk and run around with armour covering them.
They would have to have a lot of confidence to be a Spartan Warrior because if you didn’t have any confidence you would most likely die. Both boys and girls were brought up to the city women until around the age of seven. They were taken away from the parents and grouped together and had to attend a military boot camp. The camp was Agoge. The children were encouraged to steal and they had terrible food and clothing. They were punished for being caught. The boys had to compete with one another in games and in mock fights. But they were taught to read and write. They celebrated Spartans in the second Messenian
Document D states, “But to have regard for all the older men, to make room for them on the streets, to give up their seats to them, and to keep quiet in their presence (D).” This quote shows that the Spartan boys were taught to be respectful and kind to the elders and to not fool around while being around them. Another quote states that “Moreover, the young men were required not only to respect their own fathers and to be obedient to them…”. (D) This quote explains that the Spartan boys were not only to respect the elders but to also respect any boy or man who is older than you. All this excruciating training might be too much training and make them look like beasts, they still have to be respectful and obedient to the older people. Just like how these days children still have to respect civilians of old age or people that are older than them because they know
As a Spartan boys: Children when they are born are more children of the state than their parents. When a Spartan baby is born, soldiers come to examine it to determine its strength. They bathed the baby for reaction, and if weak the child would become a slave. Took from mother at age 7. Raised to be soldiers, loyal to the state, strong, and self-disciplined. The boys were taken to the barracks by the city and raised, and they trained in the military. They were not allowed to leave until the age of 30.
The spartans only accepted babies that were strong. If the baby was weak they would leave it to die one Mount Taygetus. They would begin at the age of seven for training. The selection of spartan warriors began before birth. They would send boys at the age of seven to military boarding school.
Spartans were very strict and set high expectations for their men in war. Taken from their families at the young age of 7 to train, the boys were whipped and starved. Spartans also enslaved people, called helots. The innocent helots were killed without warning. Spartans were so
Spartans military was a hard core and well rounded out military in its time. Part of the reason why they were so successful is because of their rigorous training each boy had to go through. Why I said boy is because the Spartan military training would start at age 7 for a chosen boy. The boy gets chosen to live in spartan society at birth. If the Spartans did not believe that the boy would be rounded out for their society they would leave the boy to die. During the boys training hazing and fighting was encouraged to help improve strength among the boys. During spartan training each boy was mainly taught mathematics, music, and how to fight. Also during their training, they would learn how to steal but without getting caught. If they were caught they would not be punished for stealing but only for getting caught. This type of training continues until the boys would become men. Which is at the age of 20 for the Spartan's. At age 20 Spartan men would have to pass a series of demanding
After an embarrassing defeat at the battle of Hysiai Sparta went through great military change, these changes dramatically changed all other areas of Spartan life, turning Sparta into a military focused state. This militaristic influence impacted greatly on Spartan education, essentially aiming to mass produce the perfect solider. The education and training of Spartan boys aged as young as 7 in the agoge became the crucial
Also, as Document B describes, the Spartan boys had no footwear and had to wear one clothing throughout the year. This helps for future wars when soldiers have to endure extreme conditions. However, it also leads to the fact that Spartan education was overemphasized on physical fitness, not much of “academic learning” we focus on
And lastly, the teamwork and survival skills of the Spartans was a major key factor to how they were so effective in battle. They were not something to mess with as they tend to have a powerful standpoint on how it should be for themselves of surviving. According to document B, it is stated that they were told to steal food for themselves as they live off of having hungry stomachs but if they get caught then they would be disciplined by being whipped, enforcing that they need to work fast and efficient, because getting caught in the real world is not an option, which is why it makes them hardened warriors that almost never fail at what they do as they keep the consequences under check. However, in document A, they were trained from ages 8-21 which makes their bond for each other be at its peak. as they take this brotherly bond into battle then they would have more effectiveness of getting things done as a group, making them a force to be reckoned with. The thing as it may be is that they train their Spartans to the max in order to have the utmost effective soldiers fighting for their own beliefs, which is why their powerful
This distinctive reputation came about through many different ways. A defeat in battle in Tegea 7th C BC may have initiated their fixated focus on the army. Spartans are famous for the agoge; their ‘education system’. Nearly every healthy male child was selected after strict evaluation through the “ test” put in the wild. These young boys then endured years of systematic rigorous brutality and training until they became men, soldiers that were able to fight in the Spartan wars.
First, I will be explaining about is the spartan warriors’ toughness. Instead of letting them to be pampered in the matter of clothing, he introduced the custom of wearing one garment (Doc B). Also, [Lycurgus] required such a moderate amount of [food] that the boys would know what is was to go with their hunger unsatisfied(Doc B). This was a major advantage of the Spartans.
Spartan's were a dominating army that were more strong then all of the of the other armies from different city-states. now we need to know what they did at home while the men were at war. It's like when the U.S. Army goes out for war, what do the rest of the military soldiers go when the rest are at war. This is something that we need to discover from the Spartans and we also need to know if the strengths outweighed the weaknesses or did not.
The poetry of Tyrtaeus illustrated and explained Spartan culture, ethics, values and ethos by highlighting their nobleness, bravery, and strength. He stated that citizens only boasted and fought when they were able to stay fearless and valiant through times of chaos and panic. “For none can boast...maintain a hero’s part / Unless he fearless and intrepid bear” (Tyrtaeus, Martial Elegies, Elegy 1). Every citizen, even the honored fighters, were humble, equal and shared everything with the other citizens. They had the qualities of a fighter and the ability to make it through a war remaining courageous the whole time. This was because fighting with the Spartan Army was an honor. “This is a man’s best, greatest, noblest praise / And shall to youth
The warriors were trained to be resourceful and learn to adapt to hunger and suffering and getting supplies. The soldiers wore no shoes so they could be more nimble in rougher areas, they also wore one garment of clothing all year so they can adapt to all types of weather (Doc B). the solders were able to move more in rougher areas tightly packed together from this training. There was encouragement to steal food, but reading and writing was only for practical reasons (Doc A). The soilders were able to survive with little food from this training and were able to understand military instruction if in writing. The men in the Spartan society were taught how to be more resourceful and that is what their education was meant for.
Sparta was, above all, a military state, and emphasis on military fitness began at birth, imprinted through society and the political system. The education of the Spartan male children prove that the military and war was constantly a huge part of Spartan society, and the laws and systems that Sparta was governed by, only enforced the militaristic attitude into the society of Sparta. That the Spartans needed to be ready for war is proved by the discord between the Spartiate and the helots, who outnumbered and under ranked the Spartans.
The Spartan army was arguably the most notorious military force in Ancient times, this is because of their great success in warfare and their renowned skill in fighting and this reputation has resulted in them being notoriously respected in Ancient times. This has been highlighted in modern-day media with the film: “300” when the movie was released in 2006. The Spartan’s in theory were the world’s first super soldiers, entirely devoted to combat training with a full-time job as a warrior, they were truly a force to be reckoned with. Due to Sparta’s fierce reputation even modern armies including the US still use some of Sparta’s military values. In my project, I will be evaluating as to whether Spartan training was the most significant factor
