This case is about whether the seller of beehives, Curtis Wilhelm, has a responsibility to warn a buyer’s employees about the dangers of working with beehives. The case was heard by the Texas Court and the Texas Court of Appeals. It was appealed to the Texas Supreme Court. Both the Court and Court of Appeals ruled that the seller, Wilhelm, did have a responsibility to warn the buyer and his employees. The Texas Supreme Court overturned the ruling. There was a purchase agreement between Wilhelm and John Black. Black was purchasing the beehives, not working for Wilhelm either directly or by contract. Black contracted the plaintiff, Santos Flores Sr. to assist in moving the beehives. Flores was provided a protective suit but not warned of the
Another event more recently was reported in Pennsylvania where Keepers reported a 53% loss of their hives. But what made this event most serious was the loss of 1/3rd of bee hives within the United States as a whole. This event appeared to have no particular rhyme or reason for this cause and no singular circumstance could be pointed to as an exact cause of such mass destruction of one species that is crucial to food production within the United States ("Honey Bees and Colony Collapse Disorder").
One day, Lily and her younger sister Milly went to the carnival and on the way they passed by the zoo. This reminded Lily about how much Milly loved penguins.

I am at the halfway point in the novel The Secret Life of Bees. Written by Sue Monk Kidd, the story is extraordinary so far as it instantly had me with the setting, Southern Carolina in 1964, I knew I would be interested. The story is written in first person by the main character, Lily Owens. It is almost like her own written story as she mentions she would like to go to school to be a writer. This is shown in her narrative when it almost seems like she is trying to address the reader as she is telling the story to us. She says a lot before thinking it through. She writes it as it just came to her mind. From her bluntness, you can still tell she has a good sense of humour.
Seven years ago honeybee colonies were reported to be dying en masse. They were dying from multiple causes, and these bee disappearances reflect an infertile landscape and a dysfunctional food system. The problem is that in the last 50 years bees have been dying and we’re planting more crops that require bees pollination. Colony Collapse Disorder, Varroa mites, and our farming practices attribute to these disappearances of our most important pollinator, bees.
Without doubt, the plot of this book surely does rise, twist, and fall. Throughout the story, the hurdles Lily face become higher and higher, therefore she must surpass them one by one. The book starts out with it’s initial situation when me meet Lily, the withdrawn teenager with no companionship besides her abusive father and her nanny, the latter of whom, she actually gets along with well. Lily, in her isolation, claims that bees dance around her room at night. Trying to tell her father about these bees award her with nothing but shouting. The plot of our story rises when Lily and Rosaleen head out to Tiburon, so that Rosaleen can vote as an African American woman. Lily tags along so that she can atleast get out of the house on her birthday.
The Secret Life Of Bees, written by Sue Monk Kidd, should be considered a classic because of its unique way of relating the characters and the story line to the reader's emotions and to history. In The Secret Life Of Bees- and all books- descriptive detail and skillful writing is crucial. The principle reason this story is a classic is because of how Sue Monk Kidd was able to use a metaphor throughout the entire story. Bees represent society and life and without help from other bees and the queen bee, the hive dies- an incredible and unique way to show the readers the importance of appreciating life. Classics need numerous features to be considered one of the highest quality, and The Secret Life Of Bees has very many. Italo Calvino, Nelson
The mothers, the Boatwright sisters and the Daughters of Mary, help Lily to grow as a person and as a young lady. Without the queens in her life, Lily would forever be lost on who she is and her outlook on the future would be dull as she would have no purpose to move on in life. The women help Lily to realize that regret and the past should not hold you back from your future. Like bees, Lily needed a queen or multiple to guide her in life; The Secret Life Of Bees teaches one that the love and affection from an adult figure can help a person to grow and learn who he/she truly is. Leaving T. Ray ultimately gives Lily mothers who will always be there to catch her when she falls and who will love her unconditionally.
The Secret Life of Bees, written by Sue Monk Kidd, is a story that follows our narrator, Lily Melissa Owens, who describes events that took place in the summer she turned 14. The story begins in Sylvan, South Carolina, and focuses on Lily as a lonely teenager. Right from the start, we see that she suffers from an unhappy home life, due to struggle within the family and internal struggle within herself. As a young child of 4, Lily lost her mother in an unfortunate accident; during a fight between her parents, she got her hands on a gun and mistakenly shot her mother. The result has left her with a neglectful father, T. Ray, a surrogate mother Rosaleen, and enough guilt to last a lifetime. Furthermore, the rest of the book describes her escape from her father, along with Rosaleen, and her stay at the Boatwright sisters’ house. Throughout the novel, the author displays examples of a variety of literary terms. The four main terms most present are that of foreshadowing, symbolism, theme, and tone.

Not everyone in the world has a perfect family and may experience certain events in childhood that can affect the way they see and how they display themselves. You didn’t mean it, but it was you” (299). After hearing this and helping break her only friend and black caretaker, Rosaleen out of jail, the two runaway to a place where Lily suspects her mother once spent time. While on this journey, Lily must find out the truth and come to terms of who her mother really was, and to help understand her own life.
In 1619 the very first African Americans arrived in America, coming over for the purpose of forced slavery. It’s been nearly four hundred years since then and African Americans are still not treated completely equal. But throughout the years major steps towards equality have been made and as a whole the United States is close to reaching this goal. The first key action taken was abolishing slavery in 1865, but African Americans didn’t start gaining equal rights until 1955 during the Civil Rights Movement. The African American Civil Rights Movement aimed to eliminate all racial discrimination and segregation in America and demonstrated throughout Sue
Bees do two things. First, they create honey, that honey is bought and sold in markets. And there is a price for honey. Secondly, however, bees are also flying out and pollinate the crops nearby farmers. Sometimes a mile, maybe three miles. Apple orchards can be big. (The average size would be a little over 50 acres), but bees might be easily cross the property line and pollinate trees in the next orchard. However, in many locales, contractual bargaining between beekeepers and orchard owners is well
Scientist at the University of Queen Mary of London discovered that bumblebees can learn how to collect food from challenges like pulling a string and are able to pass that ability to the rest of the colony. This is the first time intelligence has been seen in an insect; and, the first time that a cultural spread of this caliber has been seen in invertebrates. These findings are important because not only does it show that bees, like the honeybees, have the intelligence to solve problems or learn to solve problems on their own; but, it also shows that other bees can learn by observing a trained bee do the same thing. This experiment also gives insight to the social and culture interactions in animals that may show the evolutionary roots
