Behavior of Males versus Females in a Gym
While systematically observing a social situation for approximatly one week, I have
observed some common patterns of interaction and have rendered some possible explanations
for these patterns of behavior. While there were some irregular observations, most of the
behavior was consistent with that of my hypotheses. My research question involves the
behavior of males versus females in the setting of a workout room or gym. I hyptohesized that
males are more likely to interact with each other than females are, and males are more likely to
use weights than females, while females are more likely to utilize aerobic activity machines
more than males. All of these

I chose to observe both of these locations because of
the varitey of people who could be observed and the type of people who used both of these
facilities. In the Bream Wright Hauser weight room, there are three step machines, and a bike
located along the left wall, and the whold right side of the room includes weight machines to
work various parts of the body. In the middle of the room and to the back are the free weights
and weight benches. This room includes mostly weights and very few aerobic machines. In
the______________ weight room, however, there are very few weight and an abundance of
aerobic machines. One small corner contains weights and the rest of the room includes several
step machines, bikes, and other aerobic machines. One observation which I noticed was that
while the Bream Wright Hauser room included predominatly males with a few females,
including myself, the ____________room comtained all women and no men. I think this is
owed to the contents of the room. Even in Bream Wright Hauser, the small number of women
tended to use the aerobic machines. This leads me to one observation that the women are
much more likely to use the aerobic machines than men. Also, because there was not a single
man in the ___________room, I also concluded that men tend to utilize the weights much
more frequently
It was completely remodeled in 2012 and includes state of the art free weight and machines for its members. It’s a fully equipped gym with machines and resistance training equipment, that is being updated and added to every year.
I chose to view the categories gender exercise and also race and ethnicity exercise. For the gender data the question asked was, “During the past month, did you participate in any physical activities?”("BRFSS Prevalence & Trends Data: Home | DPH | CDC", 2016) The results were 78.8% of males said yes they participated in physical activity in the past month and 75.9% of females said yes they participated in physical activity in the past month. These numbers are very close to each other, definitely closer than I thought they would be. I was not surprised to see that men reported to be engaging in more physical activity than women because of the stereotypes. I think this difference exists because, in my opinion, more men like to be active and exercising than women. Now, I’m not saying that women don’t like to be physically active and
By using the mean, median, and mode of the results recorded, I believe women and men will be alike in ways people did not expect. By looking at the content of fat and muscle composition on the calf, weight of a female/male, and the ability to vertically jump, evidence will be provided that physical activity does not solely rely on the gender of a person. If the circumference of any persons’ calf is high due to fat then their ability to jump higher will decrease because of lack of muscle and/or lack of physical activity. Comparing men and women though, research leads to evidence that men can jump higher than women. If a man and a woman’s were compared, a man will be able to jump higher due to higher testosterone, activity of a male, and the muscle composition of a male.
This was surprising because I expected men to work-out their upper body the most, but instead it was the middle body. Also, the participants were asked if they work-out any other part of the body, besides on what they focus on. The results show that 72% answered yes and 28% of the participants said no. In particular, when asking participants if they work-out any part of the body both men and women answered 72% yes and 28%
A woman may need to be seen as a leader in the workplace, while still keeping the nurturing side that society expects her to have and that men are not required to show. Girls interested in math may not be encouraged to pursue their interest, and boys may have self-esteem issues that are overlooked. My research focused on gender differences in aggression in the movie The Princess and the Frog. Research has found that there are moderate gender differences in aggression.
As seen in “Not Just a Game”, during the 19th and 20th centuries, scientists warned that physical activities could cause a women’s uterus to implode or give her “bicycle face”- a physical condition marked by “peculiarities” including “pale complexion” and an “anxious expression.” Women were eventually allowed to compete in track and field events during the 1928 Olympic Games, however the discrimination against female runners continued for several more decades (Rostkowska,
When you walk into a gym, it is common to see females over in the aerobics room or using the cardiovascular machines and it is common to see males on the opposite side of the gym using the weights. No one ever seems to have a problem with this- after all, it is ‘normal’ for males to want to build muscle and females to lose fat and tone, right? What causes this division in the gym? In my study, I want to investigate how gender stereotypes affect females, ages 14-18, in the gym. Do females want to try weights but fear crossing the gender boundary? I want to investigate whether females are experiencing barriers in the gym because of what society tells them what
When passing through the gated entry to this exclusive community, the beautiful landscaping is the first thing that stands out. The large pool and spa along with the sun deck and barbeque areas are the main locus of relaxation. When residents need to work up a sweat to stay in shape they can visit the fitness center that is in the clubhouse that also has a great room and billiards room. There is a business center with library for those who need to get work done and they can even get some
One popular theory comes from an American social psychologist, Leonard Berkowitz. He states that men and women are traditionally educated to carry out different social rules. Parents buy young boys toy guns, while they purchase dolls for young girls. In addition, the article states that males are more aggressive. In many species, males are more muscular, heavier, and capable of attacking and defending. The arms of a human male are on average 75 percent more muscular than those of women. Also, the top of a male body is 90 percent stronger than the top of a female body. The following quote from Berkowitz details what he sees as the difference between the sexes, “men are taller, they have denser and heavier bones, their jaw is more massive, their reaction time is shorter, their visual acuity is better, their muscle/fat ratio is greater, their heart is bulkier, their percentage of hemoglobin is higher, their skin is
My belief is that gender stereotypes are playing a role in these men and women’s desire to exercise. In most societies,
most of the women were insufficiently physically active. [Conclusion] The conclusion to be drawn is that there is

To mitigate this, Szivak, et al (2013) suggested that the specificity of exercises can improve performance and reduce the occurrence of injury. The regimen calls for more focus on heavy periodized resistance training as oppose to the current routine emphasizing cardio workout. However, Finestone, et al (2014) point out that due to hormonal differences, females doing strength training build less muscle mass than men. Females inherently have only 70 percent lower body strength and 30-50 percent upper body strength compared to men of comparable size.
The sexes of the clients favored the females. Five participants were female and three male. This gender ratio did not affect the group conversation that I could tell.
Tip #7: Set up an appropriate workout area. This workout series requires space for everything, so make sure to make some. If you have to, move the furniture off to the sides of the room. Additionally, you will want to grab some weights or resistance bands ready to go. Get a workout pad or have two towels ready, one for padding and one to wipe away the sweat.
