I held firmly the point of view that politics could alter the image of an individual to vastly oppressive state. Many times I felt panic-stricken in my political science classes, address Brown v. Board of Education and the like. I realized my skin color served as a driving force of advocacy. I was privileged in terms of being able to have the perspective opposite of the majority. I felt the need as a minority student to raise awareness of minorities, and other identities in the classroom environment. I was not defensive but rather fascinated by misconceptions, and the lack of consciousness offered by the majority. I felt compelled to participate even when not required to change the atmosphere of the surrounding educational environment. I acquired a firm taste for social justice, reminiscing on my childhood

I have a dream.” – Martin Luther King Jr. It is because of the Brown vs. The Board of Education court case that allows the University of Texas at Austin, along with hundreds of universities, to be have a diverse student body. This case opened new doors to racial opportunities. What started off as a plea for equality, would change the world in its own way. Brown, who is not defined to one person but rather a group that wanted freedom of segregation from schools, would go against the Board of Education in a duel of words to bring an equal education towards all citizens. Over the last couple of years, I have had many opportunities that dealt with me enriching diversity for my campus and community. Being a member of Phi Theta Kappa has many immeasurable benefits. One benefit that came with me being a chapter officer at North Hennepin Community College is that every year we get to choose a project that benefits or raises awareness to the community. This year me and my Phi Theta Kappa team chapter members wanted to see what our fellow student body members thought about equally underrepresented minorities in position of power. We were able to gather and interpret the results. From the results, I personally changed my attitude, I learned that everyone needs to be educated so that they could be more knowledgeable

Civil liberty and social inequality has been one of the most protested and talked about subject, even before the civil rights movement that began in the mid-50s. Many different people find the courage to bring these injustices to light and speak out against the subject, creating a more equal and truly bringing justice to all, no matter race, religion, ethnicity, or gender. Whether it be through a peaceful protest or moving speech, courageous minorities help resolve civil issues within America and demand change. Civil liberty issues have been, and still is being, resolved through vocal advocates willing to protest and use the first amendment to speak out against discrimination and unfair treatment towards minorities.

I spent most of my time at underprivileged schools. Being from a school district where every student received the same education without considering the student’s race, gender, and/or ethnicity. The one experience that has stood out to me was when I was helping a fifth grade student with his math homework. This student was really struggling with multiplication. I recalled working on more advanced math when I was in the fifth grade. This opened my eyes to see that these children were more than likely not receiving the same education I received when I was their age. After spending all afternoon with this student, he thanked me for taking the time to help him, saying that no one, not even his parents have ever invested that much time into his education. This was one more thing I did not experience; I had two parents who were constantly helping me with homework even to this

I also learned that when young African American individuals have a higher amount of quality connections to others, it lessens their inability to succeed in school and actually enhances their ability to achieve success. Furthermore, when there is a strong connection between an individual and their identification with their race or ethnicity, it promotes a greater sense of self-worth and leads to a better possibility of achieving academically and securing a job later in life. When African American individuals experience discrimination, it negatively impacts their ability to function in school and diminishes their sense of self-worth and quality of life, which inhibits them from experiencing positive outcomes in life. Lastly, these negative outcomes described above are combatted when individuals feel as though they have some influence on creating an environment of equality and justice within

As I started believing in myself as well being valuable in this field, I had a hard time expanding my knowledge and challenging the stereotypes that were often labels of families of color. I had to learning the sociological issues that exist in education are

At Barry I met students of various races and cultural backgrounds. The diversity of students generated interesting dialogues, which lead to healthy debates during class discussions and group assignments. I learned to look at life from various perspectives, and gained a new understanding of people in general. My most profound discovery was, once I understood the culture of the person, I developed a better understanding of the person’s thoughts, views, and opinions. Although, we are all different in many ways, our difference does not make us any less deficient. In essence, we can agree that we disagree on certain issues and continue to be respectful of one another.

As a poor Asian who ventured out of a dominantly white, small town, I understand the consequences of being a minority. This is how my passion to serve the underserved originated, and why I have partnered with service organizations such as Berea Buddies and AmeriCorps. Being a member of these empathetic communities has deepened my gratitude for how beautifully diverse our world is and for all people regardless of the challenges they face. For example, upon entering my service year to mentor children in D.C. public schools, I was told by almost everyone that there is no helping those children because of the family and monetary problems they encounter. Their responses reminded me of the comments I heard when I decided my life after high-school.

Throughout my career I have dealt with a very diverse population of individuals. In the beginning of my exposure to the helping profession I have participated in direct service work with an eclectic adolescent population. I lived and worked with a group of young women that came from a variety of socioeconomic and racial backgrounds. From there I moved on to service work through a local department of social services. At that time I was involved with case planning and management with families who had their children placed in foster care or whose children were at imminent risk of placement outside of the home. As I look back I realized that the population I dealt with during that time period was actually less diverse than the teen population

Studies continually show a racial, economic, and educational inequality within American society. This bias consistently favors the white population, with opportunities trickling down sparingly to minority populations. Social scientists devote a tremendous amount of time, energy, and financial resources in an effort to learn how to correct these disparities. We propose that one of the most intuitive means of creating this social change is to instill a desire in our children to join the battle for change. To accomplish this goal, we must first understand the factors that impact a student’s desire to get involved in creating social change. We think this understanding is critical for impacting the issue of inequality in America.

The difference it has made is it has helped many children and adults in many ways. A couple ways are showing these people with disabilities that there is more to life than sitting around waiting for something to happen. You can go outside and play. You can play sports and join a team. You can just simply have fun with your friends. This foundation has made a major impact on all of these people.

My first choice is the Instillation of Hope the reason is that diverse group members should be exposed to people who are similar in background either in group or through information, who have overcome similar challenges and have been helped by participating in the group. We group member can share openly about a common concern and how they were able to work through other group benefit.

Since I started this class, I have a learned a great deal about cultural diversity in the classroom and abroad. My perspective has changed slightly but my knowledge of this subject has improved. In my family, my father taught me about the civil rights movement and the evils of segregation in the U.S. My parents taught me to be tolerant of all humans, no matter what they look like, how they dress, or their sexual orientation. My family has always been liberal thinkers who taught me the dark history of racism and bigotry in this country. As an educator I would be accepting to all race, creeds, and religious peoples.
