Schools should adopt an later start time. This would improve students grades and mental state because they would get more sleep. This is because of a few reasons. First of all, the American Academy of Pediatrics, a professional group of pediatricians, say that later start times can improve students life in many ways. Schools starting times should be 8:30 in the morning or later, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Sleep loss has become more common in children due to early start times which only gives them 6-7 hours of sleep a night when growing children should have 8-9 hours a night. children suffer the chronic loss of sleep due to the hormonal roller coaster that you call puberty, which only lets them begin to go into a REM sleep around 10 p.m. . It’s also been proven that adolescent children suffer from highers risks of physical health problems, mental health problems, lower test scores, missing school, substance abuse, and being in a car crash due to sleep deprivation. Students end up having to get up before 6:30 to get ready and catch the bus or walk to school, but when you have to study for hours after school, eat, clean up, participate in extracurricular activities, including sports and clubs, and do chores in less than 4 hours to get the sleep they require to be healthy mentally and physically it’s almost impossible. School should start later to better our future generations, with more sleep we could have more positive members of societies.
If we were to start school later, academic GPA’s (grade point averages) would definately increase. Isn’t this what we want in our school? It is proven that the more sleep you get, the more awake and alert you actually are. I interviewed Michael Claffey, a sophomore at Newington High School, he stated “ Goooooud.” Also Jorge Premto a sophomore at Newington High School stated “Yes Michael, yes I do believe school should start at nine o’clock am. This will thus help further my education because I will be well rested.” In all, we need school to start later because it will help us with our education.

Having a later school start time can increase a student’s academic grades and awareness. Thirty-three percent of teens say that they fell asleep in class. Even though this is a small portion of teens, falling asleep in class shouldn’t even happen once. Also, this means they are getting less than what they need,(eight to nine hours of sleep a night). A school needs to pack as much teaching time as they can in a day, but if that means waking up a student at a time so early, then there's no point.When a student doesn’t sleep as much, students are not aware as they would be if they had a good night’s rest. If students had this sleep, the would pay more attention in class. Therefor, a student would have better grades.

Since the young adults have a tendency for not being able to sleep until later, on average, the young adults only get about 7 to 7 ½ hours of sleep, when in reality they need 9 to 9 ½ hours of sleep. Later start times give the students and the teacher’s time to prepare for the day and more time to sleep. Schools can research the benefits of starting schools later and have a ruling on if they want to start schools later. One step to try and put the system in to place is to talk to other students and gage to see how they feel about their start times and ask if the district needs to start later. Second thing is if you have multiple people wanting a latter that says to have later start times have that group.

When I went to high school, class would start every day at 7:45 am which would require me to get up at about 6 am every morning. As a result of that, I would go to school feeling restless, exhausted, and I cared more about getting through the day more than actually learning in class. This lead me on to feeling poorly almost every day and made it difficult to balance catching up on sleep and getting my school work done. If you were a teen once you might be familiar with this struggle. Even though this a reality that most teens including myself have faced, it has been discovered that it has more negative effects than you might think. Not everyone would agree, but I believe if school start times were later, it would highly benefit the students academically.

Sleep experts have studied sleep cycles in teens which shows that it is more difficult for most teenagers to fall asleep as early as younger children or older adults. For a teen to be fully energized a teen would have to sleep 9 hours! An average high school student goes to sleep at 11 pm and has to wake up between 5 or 6 a.m. to allow many them to catch the bus

With a later start time, students can have plenty of time to prepare for the next day, and get plenty of sleep. Also, “When schools have delayed the start of the school day, communities have seen reduced tardiness, as well as improved attendance” (attendanceworks.org). Studies also show that children are more mature at the end of the day. But again there is a disadvantage of starting school later. One of it would be ending the school later. Mostly, students get out of school around 2 to 4 P.M. they will not like the new idea of ending school around 4:30 to 5:30 P.M. And, when the student graduate and are ready to face the real world, they can’t go to work and say, I didn’t get enough sleep so change the schedule. They can get fired for that. Although there is a disadvantage of starting school later, we should focus on the advantages. Starting school late can help students to concentrate more and to pass their class.
