The average school day is 7-8 hours and I think it’s just the right amount of time we need for school. But the school board wants to add one and half hours to our school day, and I don't think it’s necessary. We shouldn’t add time to our school day, it will have so much negative effect on our student that I don’t think it's worth it. After all, we already have a negative impact on how long our school days are. For example; most of the time we are sitting and research has shown our generation is 125% more likely to get diabetes, heart disease and other heart attacks just from us sitting down, and adding an hour and thirty minutes will only make it worse because we're sitting most for most of the day. But this is not the only negative effect of having longer school days. It will not only take us longer to get home, but it will be more difficult because of the program some people are in, they couldn’t ride regular school buses because they would have already dropped off the high school students and would have been on their way home, and the people who go to these programs (Academy 360) will have to make their bus drive longer to get home because they will probably have to catch different buses, and the student will be more tired and not be able to work to their absolute best abilities, because they are usually out of school at this time and their brains are out of learning mode and into relaxing mode.
The first problem with longer school days is you couldn't
In Letting teens sleep in would save the country roughly $9 billion a year, Christopher Ingraham attempts to persuade the reader that later school start times would result in significant economic, and health benefits, despite short term cost deficits. Based on the evidence provided in the article, it is clear that Ingraham uses data from an “exhaustive new study by the Rand Corporation” to validate his argument, targeted toward the United States federal government as an audience. With this data, the author provides a favorable reason in arguing that later school start times should be implemented, boasting the fact that “The United States would realize $9 billion in economic gains”. Although it is stated that short term cost disadvantages would
Have you ever had those thoughts where they were too scary, but they were very possible? The reasons why we should not have 90 more minutes in our day is because people have plans, it can be expensive, and because it won’t fix our problems. We shouldn't have school for a longer period because other people may have plans afterwards. Some people may have a doctor's appointment right after their last class. Some may have a sport to practice for that can't be too late in the day. Some may even have to leave early for whatever reason, and they could be missing an extra class they have to attend.
If an hour and half of school were added every day, students would miss after school activities. Students will miss the fun extracurricular activities. and students won’t get the exercise they need.
Should schools go to a 4 day school weeks instead of 5 days? This has been a hot topic in state especially the states that don’t have as large of an economy. A poll where 2,700 random people were polled about 67% favoured a 4 day school week(university of Scranton). The reason why school districts are going to a 4 day school weeks is to save money and the states that you see switching to a 4 days are states that have economic problems such as Oklahoma. You won’t have to run the electricity or pay for buses. The only question is does it hurt students education but the statistics are showing that is clearly not the case one bit. 4 day school weeks would be better for schools without a doubt because you save money and kids will be more refreshed and not burned out also their behavior is showed to become better.
The school day should start later in order improve students’ mental health. Survey results have consistently indicated that middle level and high school students who start school at 7:15 a.m. or earlier obtain less total sleep on school nights due to earlier rise times in comparison to students at later-starting schools. () This is just the beginning of the negative impacts that early start times have on students. By starting school at a later time, students’ brains will function better, their grades and learning increases, and will be more mentally stable.
In conclusion, high schools should keep the time to start and end school the way it is. It is not worth it if students comes back from school later in the afternoon and doesn’t know what to do before dark comes. Even if they do know what they’re gonna do like probably go to work, do after school activities, and activities outside from home. The whole school gets affected because for teachers who have a young child they won’t be able to do anything they want before their child comes home from school. So if everyone get’s a negative affect by this then it’s truly not worth the money to change the

Imagine sitting at a desk all day listening to a teacher drone on and hand you a worksheet right after that. Well if your school day was 9 hours and 30 minutes instead of 8 hours, then that's what you would have to do. You would be there till 4:30 in the afternoon. Who wants to be there for that with only lunch as a break? Every class would be about 18 minutes longer. Which is why I don’t agree with schools extending the day because it can cause sleep deprivation, result in more kids getting in trouble, and more kids zoning out.
Have you ever just wished your school day as shorter? In some schools children have longer school days. In Finland the school day is fifteen percent shorter than the school day in the United States, but their test scores are much higher. People have different points of view on length of the school day in America. Some people think that school days should be longer to improve academics for students.“The US lags behind other countries in core subjects. In 2015, American students came in 24th in reading, 25th in science, and 41st in math out of 72 countries—not the worst, but far from the best,” (pg. 30) Because the U.S.A is behind, many experts believe that students should go to school for an additional 90 minutes a day.U.S.A. The school board is considering adding an hour and a half to the school day. The extra hour and a half will cause scheduling problems. This would also cause teachers and students to become more tired. Also, this would cause conflicts with family and activities outside of school. For these reasons, the school board should not be extended the school day by one and a half hours for various reasons.
The School Board wants to add one and a half hours to each school day. I disagree and here is why.
Imagine this, it’s 5:00 in the morning you’re all groggy and tired, so you sleep in until 6:30. Finally, you wake up and notice you have to take a shower, get dressed, organize your backpack, eat breakfast and then suddenly you miss the bus. Just great! In many school districts the school’s starting schedule is a topic of controversy. The school day should start later in the morning. This change will prevent kids from falling asleep in class. As well as, making the children more responsive and ready to learn. Finally, it will give kids time to eat a healthy breakfast in the morning.
The school board of the district should not make the school day longer by adding an extra hour. Kid’s will get tired, not being able to focus and stay off task. Kid’s also need time for basic necessities, like eating dinner, sleeping a full eight hours, being social, and even for some kids, working at jobs.
Many jobs nowadays can require later afternoon hours of work which could leave your child at school for many hours after the school day has already ended. For example student Lexi Ibuos who attended Konawaena Middle School says, “ My mom works late sometimes which leaves my brother and I at school for a various number of hours each day. My mom almost picked my brother and I up and 6 pm once, and I do most of my homework at school but it’s also a pain living far away from school and having to study all night and then waking up early because of the certain times my mom has to work.” What Lexi says shows that extending the time we start would really help us in school and outside of school leaving us feeling more prepared and ready for the next day, instead of being rushed to head the school. Who could imagine what would happen if everyone in the whole world didn’t get any
Superb grades are crucial to getting into a decent college. As students, the most valuable source to good grades is time away from the classroom. More and more schools have switched to the four-day school week, and in many schools it has been beneficial to not just students but teachers as well. The four-day week is helpful in so many different ways, from catching up on homework to that extra rest from a long day. When a child is sick or needs a check-up at the doctor’s office, that extra day off gives them that time to take off without falling behind in school. Many schools have to deal with financial problems and with the four-day week that gives the school less expenses and in a long run will help tremendously. Not just Colby but every school should switch to the four-day week because all of these factors are beneficial and useful.
