Deep space and Ancient Warriors A literary symbol is something often an object that stands for a significant concept or series of ideas often a symbol is emblematic of the values of the characters. In the narrative Beowulf and the movie Star Wars, many aspects of symbolism are paralleled. In the movie Star Wars the most important examples are the Death Star, light sabers and the force. In Beowulf, some of the most important examples of symbolism are Grendel's arm and head, the dragon's treasure-trove Hrothgar's mead-hall and Grendel's cave. The mead-hall is both symbolism and a setting in the epic. The building is like a palace that towers high just as a cliff with horn shaped at the ends of the walls. They aren’t opposed to technology, however they do not rely on it alone, at the expense of their own senses and feelings. When Luke encounters Obi Wan Konbi and Yoda in their homes these Jedi masters live simple lives close to the land. When Luke has to destroy the Death Star with, Obi Wan Konbi voice tells him to rely only on his own senses, his intuition, and his connection to the Force. A contrast to the way of the Jedi is the behavior of their dark-side counterparts, the Sith. Darth Vader is more machine than man with robotic limbs and built-in life support. Significantly, Darth Vader’s last request is for Luke to remove his mask, so that Vader may see Luke directly, without the technological filter. Proving that the simplistic life is the best to have and not to let the eye candy of life control your life because the technology is the eye candy and the simple life is the nature. These two stories are great parallels of each other
2009. A symbol is an object, action, or event that represents something or that creates a range of associations beyond itself. In literary works a symbol can express an idea, clarify meaning, or enlarge literal meaning. Analyze a symbol in George Orwell's 1984, and write an essay demonstrating how that symbol functions in the work and what it reveals about the characters or themes of the work as a whole. Do not merely summarize the plot.
Movies and books are never the exact same, sometimes even the whole plot is changed around. In the book Beowulf the plot, characters, and setting are a lot different than they are when the movie was created. If a person watched the movie before they read the book, it may be totally confusing to read. In the book, Beowulf shows up and plans to fight with his men, then leaves to go back to his own kingdom. In the movie Beowulf, Beowulf ends up staying and becoming king of Dane Land.
Symbolism is a major literary device that helps people see a book through symbols that often have a deeper meaning. A symbol is used to explain something in a different way, using images, objects, etc. instead of just saying it in words. As you search for a deeper meaning in a work of art or literature it can help you understand the authors intentions and the deeper significance of a work. In Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, symbols help reinforce the major themes of the book.
The poem Beowulf, written by an unknown Anglo-Saxon poet and the movie script, written by Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary. The story is about a Man named Beowulf, who becomes a hero to his town Heorot, by defeating a monster named Grendel. He is later named King of Geats, because of his braveness and loyalty to his people. After about fifty years of ruling, a dragon threatens the town’s people. Beowulf and his servant, Wiglaf, set off to defeat this dragon. While he did succeed to kill it, sadly Beowulf dies in the process. In the poem versus the movie, Beowulf shows different character traits throughout the story. Heroism, loyalty, and bravery all differ from the poem to the movie. The audience will perceive Beowulf as a completely different person if only looking at one of the two pieces.
Have you ever noticed how a movie can be very different from the book that it is supposed to portray? Beowulf is an example of one of these types of movies. Although the movie covers the general story of Beowulf in the book, it changes some key elements of the plot, shifts characters roles, and contains differences in the setting. Throughout the start of the story it seems as if the movie will be identical to the book, but as the plot progresses many scenes, settings, and roles appear to be very different. Even though the movie twists the plot and applies new scenes that are not found in the book, it still follows the correct sequence in which the general events are ordered.

Someone who is dearly admired or idealized for their courage and outstanding achievements or their noble qualities is what is said to be a hero today. Hero’s in today’s world have many qualities, such as, courage, selflessness, humility, patience, and a care/concern or kindness for others. In his three major battles, Beowulf fights for many different reasons. His motivation varies, and as he grows older and wiser his attitude toward these battles also changes. Throughout the epic, Beowulf bradoshously beats Grendel, then more methodically murders Grendel’s mother, and with his last breathes humbly hollers for help to slay the dragon. This shows that Beowulf’s early focuses of glory and riches changes as he becomes a weathered warrior acknowledges that he cannot defeat his enemies alone and must utilize the resources provided to him such as armor, magical items, and companions.
Symbolism is when concrete things are used to represent abstract ideas. Symbols can be any person, place, or thing that the reader believes represents more than what it literally is. Authors can use symbols to help the reader get fully immersed into the plot. Symbols can also help identify motifs or themes that run throughout the story. In Naomi Novik’s Throne of Jade, the Allegiance, a ship, is used as a symbol of tension between countries, specifically China and Great Britain.
