Berserkers
You never forget a close encounter with a wild animal bent on hunting you down for their next meal. It is one of the terrifying experiences you could ever have. Now imagine being approached by a stealthy creature with the face of a man and the head of a bear or wolf brandishing sword and shield. The creature wild-eyed almost foaming at the mouth. Wouldn't that terrify you? This is a good description of the Berserker a Norse warrior who fought in a nearly uncontrollable, trance-like fury, a characteristic which later gave rise to the English word berserk.
Berserkers appear in many poems and sagas. They describe berserkers as ravenous men who kill, plunder, and loot indiscriminately. In later dates, Christian interpreters described
“Then when darkness had dropped, Grendel went up to Herot, wondering what the warriors would do in that hall when their drinking was done. He found them sprawled in sleep, suspecting nothing , their dreams undisturbed. The monsters thoughts were as quick as his greed or his claws: He slipped through the door and there in silence snatched up thirty men, smashed them, unknowing in their beds and ran out with their bodies, blood dripping behind him, back to his lair, delighted with his nights slaughter (Narrator pg. 42 lines 30-40)”. Beowulf is a folk epic translated by Burton Raffel. Its a story about a hero with the strengths of a bear and a wolf called to a desperate town to defeat vicious monsters who have been tormenting them for the past
In The 13th Warrior, the vikings are continuously attacked by the Wendol, a tribe of people that live and fight as if they were bears. This constant fighting in both storylines depicts the Anglo-Saxon notions of bravery and perseverance. They did not cower to the looming threats, instead they fought. The warriors in both Beowulf and The 13th Warrior do not stop fighting when one of their own dies, they persevere. They constantly fight and are willing to go to battle in order to prove their honor and bravery.
In today’s society, we see violence as a way to cope with all types problems. Humans have used violence as a way to resolve issues since ancient times. The poem “Beowulf” was written between the eighth and eleventh century by an anonymous author. The poem recounts the story of a brave warrior, named Beowulf, who battles three great monsters. Two of the monsters, Grendel and Grendel’s Mother, terrorize the people of Daneland and the third monster, the Dragon, lives in Beowulf's homeland. The epic poem “Beowulf” illustrates and normalizes the idea of violence within the Pagan Warrior Culture.
The Old English epic Beowulf is the earliest recorded poem in Old English. The story is set in Scandinavia with the antagonist Grendel. Gendel is a monster and an insensitive character. Grendel was born into a monster and was cursed his entire life. Although Grendel was strong he wasn’t very brave because he only attacks at night when the guards are asleep. He has many characteristics that a monster would have. First and foremost, he was raised to be evil, and never had the chance to be good. Also whenever he would hear joy, he would be filled with anger and hatred. Grendel likes killing people he doesn’t feel any remorse after killing people. An example from the story that shows this is “Snatched up thirty men, smashed them unknowing in their beds and out with their bodies (Genesis,pg 4).”Talking about Grendel ties in with our next evil antagonist known as Cain. Cain is the son of Adam and Eve. He was a farmer who was jealous of his brother who was accepted by God and when Cain was rejected he decided to kill his brother Abel. Unlike Grendel Cain believed in god he just didn’t
According to historians, in October of 1962, “The most dangerous 13 days in the history of mankind,” took place. This was known as the Cuban Missile Crisis, a time of tensions during the Cold War between Cuba, the United States, and the Soviet Union. This period of time was so dangerous that there was enough nuclear power to destroy humanity (Cullough). John F. Kennedy, the President of the United States, was elected in 1960. Considering the fact that he was elected at 43 years old, he was the youngest President in the United States. The Premier of the Soviet Union, Nikita Khrushchev, came to rule in 1958. Another leader that was greatly involved, was Fidel Castro, the leader of Cuba who came to power in
Then the fiend step nearer,(558-564).” Beowulf still sat unfrightend by what occurs and waits for the right moment to attack Grendel. He approaches Grendel after the consumption of the man and grabs his arm and begins to crush it with his hand. “His courage fled; but he found no escape! He was fain to be gone; he would flee to the darkness,(571-572).” Beowulf full of rage and anger began to beat this monster with his bare hands. “And Beowulf gained the glory of battle. Grendel, fated, fled to the fens, to his joyless dwelling, sick unto death,(632-634).” Beowulf without fear or hesitation fought this monster and won. This beast had killed many men at a single time, but Beowulf’s courage let him prevail in a situation where fear takes over the hearts of many men.
Some reasons Blackhawk Christian School is the best school in the world is that it’s a private school and has less students than public schools. That is good, because in bigger schools that are larger, the teachers don’t normally focus and care about the students, they just want to go to work, do their job, and then go home. But, since Blackhawk is a smaller school, the teachers care and focus on teacher and student interactions in the best way possible, and they also care about the students passing their classes, rather than just assigning work throughout the year. Blackhawk has had some amazing records in the past couple years. In 2009, Blackhawk Christian had a 100% graduation rate for their senior class. In these past 2 years, all 8th grade students passed the Algebra ECA, which is exceptional. SAT scores have had an average of one hundred points more than the national average. ACT scores are also higher, being 3 points more than the nation’s average ACT score.
I awoke from my nap with a jolt. There was a man stabbing his sword over and over again into my belly. What is with these people and swords? He yelled out that his name was Beowulf but all I could do was howl in pain. “Please stop!” I screamed but he didn’t stop. That made me very angry and so I pushed him off and prepared to fight. We fought for a long time before he finally defeated me and as my world slowly went black all I could hear was the tapping off claws and then my mother’s

After the massacre, the trials were postponed for a few months for the soldiers own safety and gave time for the crowd to settle down. .Again Wikipedia does not mention the funeral and the time that the trials were postponed in order for the city and the people to calm down. Propaganda came after and propagandist such as Samuel Adams described the incident as a, “Horrid Massacre” . However, others such as John Adams who was a lawyer, believed that law and not propaganda would solve the case, and he agreed to be the defender of the soldiers at the trials, and argued that the soldiers acted in self-defense Wikipedia does state that John Adams fought for the soldiers, but it won’t say the reason to why he did it, and from other academic
The american sniper is a very awesome topic that i wanted to write about for my last year. The reason why i wanted to do it is because i have four relatives in the army marine and the navy and the Airforce. So i want us to remember the sniper which is chris kyle he was a very awesome and couraging person to me. when me and my dad went to watch the movie i didn’t move one time except for a drink and food.so i hope you have a chance to watch the movie american sniper. Chris kyle was a character that would do anything for the freedom. When i heard that the veterans give us this freedom i was shocked about it, plus i have some relatives that are veterans that i really care about, but one the characters is my loving father he was in the army for 24 years.he started at the age of 18. I willing to bet u that chris kyle started being a veteran when he was young. Chris Kyle was one of my favorite characters in the movie american sniper, but when i read that Chris kyle died i was so sad for a month that i really didn’t want to do anything at all with war games or watch any war movies because every time i saw someone
Warriors are considered among the bravest of men. In the Anglo-Saxon community, the warriors were of the most respected class, and made up the foundation for their way of living. Anglo-Saxon warriors would not stop fighting until either they were victorious or they were dead. Written during this Anglo-Saxon period, the epic Beowulf contains many pagan ideals, in addition to several references to Christian philosophy. Beowulf is a tale of dual ordeals; an external fight against treacherous enemies, and an internal struggle with human tendencies of pride, greed, cowardice, and betrayal. The story intertwines them with both pagan and Christian beliefs.
Beowulf is originally a Scandinavian story from a period before written records. It recounts the adventures of the brave and honorable Beowulf as he kills various monsters. Another representation of wanton and destruction is seen when Beowulf speaks about Ongentheow’s sons and how they , encompassed Hreasnahill with orchestrated surprise attacks on every given opportunity, savagely crusading ,they were determined not to make peace, going from ever “wale-road”(10) entrance to the next (2475-78). Monstrous behaviors that are of the nature of wanton destruction are determined by the motives of the one being violent, although violence alone is not deemed monstrous but violence without a justified cause is, with the exception that it is a man and not woman.
