Bethany Hamilton: A Tragic Hero

Kauai a tragic event took place. Bethany lost her arm due to a shark attack. Furthermore, after Bethany wakes up in the emergency room and looks at her arm she is torn. She realizes the thing she loves the most, surfing, has faded away because she thinks that you have to have both arms for surfing. The archetype the sea represents fear and has “beaten” Bethany by giving her fear and losing hope that she will never surf again, but Bethany rises on top when she gets back into the water and tries to adapt to one arm while surfing.

The time came for her to be delivered. She gave birth to her first born son, wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in the manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. These were the words that I had spoken during a church Christmas play while I was just about to see the light at the end of my elementary school career. On the morning of Halloween in 2003 was the scariest moment in Bethany’s life. She and her friend Alana went surfing in that morning. She was waiting for a good wave, then out of nowhere a fourteen foot long tiger shark came up and ripped Bethany’s arm off. Bethany was rushed to the hospital and was losing lots of blood. Bethany had to have an amputation, a surgical removal of a body part. It is regular to the U.S to see shark attacks. They see attack like about thirty to forty times a year (Doyle). It has affected

Before Thanksgiving Bethany went back to the beach for the first time since the attack. She was very brave going back to the beach after what happened. Even though the shark could still be there, she wouldn't let that stop her. She started walking up to the water, her freinds and family cheers made her feel that she could do this even more.

Perseverance and a strong spirit had been methodically etched by God into the essence of this beautiful woman. These characteristics are only gained through overcoming challenges by which her accomplishments display. Delays often came that made her progress slow, but her persistence made both her, and her love, sure and steady.

This one will be it!’ Then it happened” (Hamilton 181). This quote says that Bethany was at the point where she didn’t want to surf anymore, but if it wasn’t for her dad that told her to try it one more time, Bethany would most likely not have as much confidence. Support can really make a difference.

A thirteen year old girl named Bethany Hamilton was an up and coming surfing champion. On Halloween of 2003, all of that could have changed. That day, Bethany was surfing with her best friend, Alana, Alana’s brother, Byron, and Alana’s father, Holt. While Bethany was patiently waiting for the perfect wave, she was attacked by a fifteen foot tiger shark. The shark, attracted to her watch, came up from under her board and bit off her arm. Due to the fast reaction of her best friend’s father, Bethany survived the attack. But, because of her strength to overcome adversity, her courage, and her determination, Bethany Hamilton is the perfect example of resilience.

Bethany Hamilton is a determined surfer who never gave up on her dreams even after a shark attack. She continued to do her best, and worked hard throughout her journey. Bethany had overcame her disability as an amputee and had made her dreams come true.

Bethany Hamilton had an impact on a lot of people. Her faith in God and how positive she was through this barrier in her life was so inspiring. Bethany Hamilton is a hard worker. she had to keep trying and trying to surf again.she always practicing surfing like it football practice make perfect.she wins a lot of championships.she has to paddle out in the water just with one hand.

Even though she was an amputee now, she had decided that this injury would not stop her from becoming a pro surfer. She had determination to not give up. Now she lives a life of a pro surfer.

Not many people get attacked by sharks,but unfortunately for Bethany Hamilton she did. Bethany who was only 13 at the time was with her friend and her friend’s family surfing. She was happily on her board when a 15 foot tiger shark started watching her. She didn’t notice when the shark jumped and bite her arm off. Bethany Hamilton is obviously a resilient person because Bethany was motivated to surf less than one month after her shark attack; she was also very confident in herself even though she was an amputee, and she showed bravery in moving forward and becoming one of the top notch surfers.

Bethany Hamilton lost more than just her left arm in the shark attack. According to Biography.com, “lost approximately 60 percent of her blood following the attack.” This is important because that shows she had about 40% of what she originally had and still survived. Many people can die by losing that much blood, but Bethany didn’t. Also in an article published by the New York Times, it says, “Her friend's father used a T-shirt and a urethane surfboard leash to stop the bleeding, possibly saving her life.”

Bethany had to overcome many obstacles, such as re-learning simple things. After using two arms to help her with basic tasks, like getting dressed, it was hard for her to actually do them with only one arm. Most things she had to relearn were simple like chopping foods and getting dressed. Others weren’t as simple, like relearning how to surf. Trying to adapt to the chores she had to relearn was a difficult process, but
