Bethany Hamilton, one of the greatest female surfers in the world, received multiple awards, including the Best Comeback Athlete ESPY Award, soon after recovering from a truly life-changing experience: a shark attack. Even though difficult days were ahead of her, Hamilton displayed her wonder-woman strength by staying positive, persevering, and dedicating herself to her passions of serving the Lord, inspiring others, and of course, surfing.
While surfing along the shores of Tunnels Beach, Kauai, Bethany, at age 13, was viciously attacked by a 14 foot tiger shark, resulting in the loss of her left arm. The amount of daily tasks Bethany had to learn to do one-handed was extensive. However, Bethany remained positive with the encouragement from her faith, family and friends.

She persevered. Surfing was Bethany’s passion, her life-long dream. Failing to get back in the water was not an option. Bethany trained hard, hurdling over her life-obstacles and soon was back on her board, competing.
Her courageousness inspires everyday on a global scale. Because she faced her fears in the water, she quickly became an inspiration to others. On the morning of Halloween in 2003 was the scariest moment in Bethany’s life. She and her friend Alana went surfing in that morning. Before Thanksgiving Bethany went back to the beach for the first time since the attack. She was very brave going back to the beach after what happened. Even though the shark could still be there, she wouldn't let that stop her. She started walking up to the water, her freinds and family cheers made her feel that she could do this even more.
Perseverance and a strong spirit had been methodically etched by God into the essence of this beautiful woman. These characteristics are only gained through overcoming challenges by which her accomplishments display. Delays often came that made her progress slow, but her persistence made both her, and her love, sure and steady.

Not many people get attacked by sharks,but unfortunately for Bethany Hamilton she did. Bethany who was only 13 at the time was with her friend and her friend’s family surfing. She was happily on her board when a 15 foot tiger shark started watching her. She didn’t notice when the shark jumped and bite her arm off. Bethany Hamilton is obviously a resilient person because Bethany was motivated to surf less than one month after her shark attack; she was also very confident in herself even though she was an amputee, and she showed bravery in moving forward and becoming one of the top notch surfers.
Bethany Hamilton lost more than just her left arm in the shark attack. According to Biography.com, “lost approximately 60 percent of her blood following the attack.” This is important because that shows she had about 40% of what she originally had and still survived. Many people can die by losing that much blood, but Bethany didn’t. Also in an article published by the New York Times, it says, “Her friend's father used a T-shirt and a urethane surfboard leash to stop the bleeding, possibly saving her life.”
Bethany had to overcome many obstacles, such as re-learning simple things. After using two arms to help her with basic tasks, like getting dressed, it was hard for her to actually do them with only one arm. Most things she had to relearn were simple like chopping foods and getting dressed. Others weren’t as simple, like relearning how to surf. Trying to adapt to the chores she had to relearn was a difficult process, but
