The next day Bilbo up and doing the things he would normally do when he hears a knock at his door. He thought it was Gandalf but it was Dwalin. Then two more dwarves Kili and Fili. The main protagonist of this story is Bilbo Baggins, who is known for being very sneaky and quiet, he is amongst a very small elite group of Hobbit’s who have a knack for adventure, with some convincing he agreed to join Thorin and his group of dwarves because 13 is an unlucky number, but little did they know that he would play such an important role in their quest.
Bilbo, was an ordinary character in his community at the beginning of his journey. He lived in his nice home. “It was a Hobbit Hole, and that means comfort.”(3) He maintained a comfortable lifestyle; a tidy home, one with paneled walls, and tiled floors. Hobbits, were known for being respectable, because they were rich, but also because “they never had any adventures or did anything unexpected.”(3) He was a Baggins. A Baggins never forgot their handkerchief, or their walking stick, or any other of their comfort items when they left home. It was their ordinary calm life. He loved it,
Prior to the quest, Bilbo Baggins was a conservative, respectable and stubborn hobbit who lead a rich and comfortable life (Stephanie web). These characteristics, as well as safety and a dull existence, are typical of the Baggins
In conclusion, we can now see that Bilbo is in fact a dynamic character. He gains many qualities he can use in the future, like courage, learning to use his wits, and letting out the adventurous side in him. He used to be almost paranoid, to himself, and strict. But now he has turned into something much bigger, an adventurer. So the adventure changed him for the better. This is how Bilbo Baggins, the hobbit we thought would never do anything
“There he lay, a vast red-golden dragon, fast asleep; a thrumming came from his jaws and nostrils,” Bilbo Baggins was a self-centered hobbit who only cared about his well being. Like every other hobbit, he had no time for adventures but when a peculiar fellow shows up to his house, all he got was an adventure filled with perils. The book, The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien is about friendship, courage, and perseverance. The book begins in the home of Bilbo Baggins and ends in it too. Bilbo is just an ordinary hobbit but he soon changes as he gets whisked away on an adventure by a wizard named Gandalf.
In the book the Hobbit Bilbo has exhibited many ways in the beginning how he was a hobbit such as, not wanting to go on the adventure with the dwarves and Gandalf or, the fact he did not want the dwarves in his home in the first place as a matter of fact he ask them to leave. So this shows how Bilbo was very hobbit like in the beginning, but how about closer to the middle of this very fascinating book. First of all, Bilbo escaped the goblin all by himself and with a little help from the ring. Bilbo also found his way back to Gandalf and the dwarves once he did escape the goblins. He also took on Gollum even though it could have cost him his life.
Bilbo’s story is a story of a hero’s journey. From his origins we do not see that Bilbo likes to go on adventures. However, his mother’s side of the family got the best of him and he does decide to go on the adventure. We will look at his call to adventure and why he decided to go on the trip. Next, we will look at Bilbo and the weapons and supernatural help he used. The final aspect we’ll look at is Bilbo’s trials and transformations and goals during Tolkien’s The Hobbit.
It all started off an ordinary day for a lonely hobbit by the name of Bilbo Baggins, when he met a wizard named Gandalf and accidently invited him over for tea the next day. By the time the next day had arrived Bilbo had forgotten all about Gandalf coming over. Bilbo’s doorbell rung and he assumed it was Gandalf but it wasn’t it was a dwarf by the name of Dwalin and soon after he arrived more dwarfs started arriving and finally so did Gandalf. In all Bilbo had 13 dwarfs and a wizard to feed. They sat
The book, The Hobbit, follows the archetype of the hero’s journey. In the story, Bilbo Baggins is compelled to leave his ordinary hobbit life and join a band of dwarves and a wizard to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and its treasures from Smaug, the evil dragon who stole it from Thorin’s ancestors. Breaking away from a monotonous life was proving to be a difficult task for the tiny hero. He had to learn how to live life as an adventurer. He also had to come to terms and adjust to a normal life once his journey was over. The Hobbit is a major example of the hero’s journey.
Bilbo Baggins changes a lot in the novel The Hobbit. In the beginning he is a small peaceful Hobbit who lives in Hobbiton. He loves to keep things in order, and hates things that are disorganized. “Please be careful,” and “Please don’t trouble. I can manage” (Tolkein, 12). Then one day a wizard by the name of Gandalf comes and gives Bilbo the opportunity to go on an adventure. Bilbo turns his offer down, but the next day thirteen dwarves come to his house. They have meals together and they sleep at Bilbo’s house. Gandalf then convinces him to go on an adventure with them. Bilbo is many things, in the very begging he is flat, static, main, and he is the protagonist. By the end of the story he is round, dynamic, main, and he is still the
The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien is about a hobbit called Bilbo Baggins. His father is a Baggins, who are considered respectable, and his mother is a Took, who often went on adventures. One day while in his hobbit hole on The Shire, an old friend of the family, Gandalf, comes by, offering him an adventure, which is declined. Shortly after, while having tea, Bilbo has thirteen dwarves unexpectedly come into his home along with the wizard Gandalf. Among them is Thorin Oakenshield who was a descendant of Thror, the King of the Mountain until it and all its gold was taken by Smaug the dragon. The next morning, mostly by being pressured by Gandalf and the Took side of him, Bilbo meets the others at a hotel, and joins their adventure to go to the dragon, as their burglar. They encounter many challenges along the road such as goblins, geographically dangerous paths, wolves, giant spiders, not having the help of a wizard the whole way, and always running low on provisions. While there were many external conflicts, Bilbo endured many personal conflicts such as desiring to be back in his hobbit hole in safety, and enjoying being a Took and adventurous. During the first encounter with the goblins, Bilbo is left alone and he encounters a creature named Gollum who continuously talked to himself. He finds Gollum’s ring which allows anyone who wears it to turn invisible. The ring helps him along the journey to escape from the goblin hole, and help the dwarves when they’re taken
Bilbo Baggins is one of the main characters of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. Being a main character in a story, especially an adventure story, typically comes with some pretty hefty responsibilities. More often than not, the main character is also the hero. A hero is defined as “a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities,” and these are not necessarily qualities readily attributed to Bilbo Baggins (oxforddictionaries.com). This essay will look at three ways in which Bilbo contrasts the traditional characteristics of a hero and what transformations he ends up making to fit the mold more closely. It will examine his lineage, his strength, and his attitude as well as the changes he makes throughout the story.
The protagonist in our book is Mr Bilbo Baggins, a well respected and quiet little hobbit. The author describes hobbit’s as very well mannered creatures that look very much like humans, but are half the height. Bilbo often likes to treat himself and bakes cakes to snack on and usually if he is hungry after one breakfast he’ll have another. The majority of all Hobbits are very reserved and keep to themselves. Bilbo Baggins is no exception. He enjoys his quiet ordinary life in his cosy hobbit hole in the shire (Bilbos hometown) where he
Prior to the quest, the protagonist is a well-respected and conservative hobbit. He is very neat and methodic. Bilbo Baggins is a simple, routine-loving hobbit who wants nothing more than to live his quiet life inside his home. He does not want to go on adventures or risk missing his next meal. Tolkien commences to develop the story by describing Bilbo’s family, The Bagginses: “They never had any adventures or did anything unexpected.” (Tolkien 3). Certainly Bilbo and his father’s side of family are like most hobbits, comfortable and complacent. When Gandalf invites him to be part of an adventure his respond is negative “ Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things!“ (Tolkien 4). His answer reflects the way many hobbits view adventures. However Bilbo has inherited a streak of adventurousness from
Bilbo Baggins was a simple man, like his family. The Bagginses were rich, respected, and never did anything out of the ordinary. He had lived a quiet life in the neighborhood of 'The Hill' for some time. On a normal day, before his adventures, maybe he would relax, maybe party with fellow Hobbits. Hobbits are very friendly and easygoing, but are suspicious of people from other places and anything that seems to disturb their daily routine and tranquility. Due to this behavior, they are uninformed about the world outside of their little Hobbit-holes. This story is not about how Bilbo Baggins spent his uneventful day, however. This story is about how a Hobbit went on an adventure.
