In the year 1765, a well acclaimed group arose when the British enforced the Stamp Act. The Stamp Act was a law geared toward the American colonist to pay taxes on paper goods due to the French and Indian War. There were some colonist who believed that there should be no taxation without representation and they called themselves the Sons of Liberty. They believed themselves as patriots fighting for their rights but I view them as terrorist. They are terrorist because they condoned looting, vandalism, the tarring and feathering of people and most of all making terroristic threats, which are all characteristics of a terrorist group. On the other hand, the protest group Black Lives Matter which started from a social media post in 2012 due to an …show more content…
12). With violence comes fear and that is what they instilled in the hearts of the Britain’s and their loyalists who lived in the colonies. For example, in April, 1765, the Governor of New York expected to get a shipment of paper goods. Once the Governor found out that the Sons of Liberty knew about the shipment he locked himself inside Fort George because he was scared for his life. The Governor had every right to be scared, seeming as though the Sons of Liberty arrived at his house after he received his package and proceeded to burn his transportation. The angry mob then set their sights on a commander at Fort George and began to loot and vandalize his house. They did all of that destruction in the name of what? “Patriotism”? I think not. The Sons of Liberty were murderous bullies who tarred and feathered people who were loyal to Britain, the act of tarring someone is terroristic enough. A patriot fights for what they believe in yes, but not to the extent of killing people before they exhausted all peaceful options. The Sons of Liberty even had, “cooperation with undisciplined and extralegal groups to set off violent actions” (Kramer par. 15). I mean, come on! They used outside help to instill fear so they could get their point …show more content…
BLM is different because they want “a civil rights movement-type of change that shakes up politics and breaks the cycle of violence and silence” (Sider, Simon, par. 8). Unlike the Sons of Liberty, the Black Lives Matter movement does not condone violence especially on innocents. Yes, as a group they had some mishaps with a few radicals, but they are learning from their mistakes and are trying to weed out the people who will tarnish what the movement is about. Not like the Sons of Liberty who condoned and outsourced violent criminals. The Black Lives Matters movement tries to make change legally like having a sit in at a police station until the officers released a shooting tape in a case of an officer killing a black male. Although violence tried to arise due to tempers the group did not give in to mob mentality. They did not drag the officers out of the department and tar them, nor did they vandalize the building. Since they did things the peaceful way the case is now being looked into, and the officers who were involved in the shooting are now on leave. The protest group is also delving more into politics, the group wants the Black voice to be heard on a more intellectual
As Colonial America grew in size and power during the 1700s, there also grew increasing tensions between colonists and the British Empire ruling over them. Originally, the colonies were a place of religious freedom and of new beginnings for the immigrants sailing across the Atlantic Ocean from Europe. As population and economy grew, so did the presence of the British Monarchy. The colonists began to revolt against the overbearing laws of Parliament, engaging in various acts of violent protest, leading to the American Revolution. Behind these revolutionary efforts was a secret organization known as the Sons of Liberty. Famous members like Samuel Adams, John Hancock, Benedict Arnold, and Paul Revere banded together to organize in places like the famous Liberty Tree and taverns across the city of Boston to plan out their attacks, remaining anonymous to the colonies and the government. Starting the revolutionary hub of Boston, the group later expanded to New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Philadelphia during the sparks of revolution across the colonies. There is great controversy over whether or not the Sons of Liberty were a patriot organization or a terrorist organization. Patriotism is defined as having great love and support for their country, whereas, terrorism is defined as the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, especially political purposes. Based on their actions and characteristics, there is greater evidence proving the Sons of Liberty should be
The Black Lives Matter (BLM) Movement is a movement against police brutality. This movement began after 17-year-old boy, Trayvon Martin was fatally shot, and his killer, former police officer, George Zimmerman was acquitted for the crime. (BLACKLIVESMATTER.COM) As Black Lives Matter has continued to make a difference through peaceful protests on a mass scale , such as kneeling during the national anthem at sporting events or peaceful protests after a shooting. Many have claimed that the movement is extremely offensive, against police officers, or that African Americans are claiming superiority over other races, while others continue to support the movement. The fight between Blue Lives Matter, All Lives Matter, and Black Lives Matter continuously strikes violent riots, but the question still stands- what is the Black Lives Matter movement really trying to accomplish?
The Patriots idea of freedom and liberty was the exact opposite. They wanted to be free from the king and beat his army. They fought to win freedom and to be able to govern their own colonies without the king. Although some slaves fought in the war many others worked for Loyalists families like the Locktons. These families believed they would have freedom if they should win the war and leave the king to reign. The mayor of New York believed that if they killed the patriot’s commander they could win. He stated on page 90 that, “We must kill their commander.” This was said in a secret meeting of loyalists pretending to be patriots. All of the men in the room signed a document agreeing to the plan. This was their idea of liberty and freedom. In a real letter written by Alexander Wedderburn to the king (a primary source found on page 117), he writes, “Sir we have been too long deaf. We have too long shown our forbearance and longsuffering… Our thunders must go forth. America must be conquered.” But, the Patriots idea of freedom and liberty was the exact opposite. They wanted to free from the king and beat his army. In the book on page 256, Isabel narrates, “Washington’s troops chased the British battlefield, killed a passel of them and took a couple hundred prisoners.” They fought to win freedom and be able to govern their own colonies without the king. The way these groups of people thought of freedom and liberty affected
Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi created a movement centered towards black Americans which later turned into Black Live Matter. Those three leaders came together in 2013 after the Trayvon Martin case that devastated the black community. Black Live Matter, also known as BLM, became an organization that has a mission to give power and a voice to violence inflicted on Black communities. So many black injustices went unnoticed and ignored, but this group will not stand to let that happen again. Injustice to the black community is what causes so many protests and movements that make the Black Lives Matter organization stronger than ever. .
Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a loosely‐coordinated, nationwide movement dedicated to ending police brutality that rose to prominence in late 2014. It takes its name from a hashtag started by three Black feminist activists Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza, and Opal Tometi but the movement and the hashtag are not identical (Freelon, McIlwain, & Clark, 2016). BLM has achieved national reputation through their online and offline organizing, obtaining extensive news media coverage and glowing references in music and entertainment television. Based on a horrendous incident that sparked a concern for a lot of Black people across the world, the sudden need for a social movement was born called BLM. Black Lives Matter is a national organization working for the validity of Black life and also working to rebuild the Black liberation movement. Black Lives Matter broadens the conversation and highlight the incidents around state violence to include the ways in which Black people are intentionally left powerless at the hands of the state. This referring to the ways in which Black lives are deprived of basic human rights and dignity. According to the article The Murder of Walter Scott, which talks about race and class, “African Americans are less than 13% of the U.S. population yet they are nearly 50% of those killed by the police. North Charleston has a population of 104,000, 47% Black and the police force is 80% white (Miah, 2015)”.
Before the American Revolution in 1775 the British were in major dept so they decided to tax the colonists. This made the colonist very furious so they started to protest against the Britains like dumping 342 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor, loyalists were being tarred and feathered, and many more horrible things. The colonists were justified in waging war and breaking away from the Britains for many reasons for example the Britain's enforced many taxes like the Stamp Act, tea act, and the Townshend Act. The colonists were also justified in breaking away from the British because the British were very tyrant towards the colonist like the quartering act, the intolerable act, and the Boston Massacre.
Arrogance and greed often blind the human eye. In the case of Britain, it blinded the king’s eyes, causing chaos within the incipient American colonies and driving the colonists into furor. Prior to that, the colonies had enjoyed a certain level of self government ever since the Parliament passed the salutary neglect. However, the king derailed the system of equality and made the American people pay most of Britain’s debt from the Seven Year War. Soon, the colonies revolted and the king took back his excessive taxations such as the Stamp Act.
5: Sons of Liberty: The Sons of Liberty is an organization of American patriots that originated in the North American British colonies. The group was formed to protect the rights of the colonists and to take to the streets against the abuses of
Before America could have any Founding Fathers, the country needed Sons of Liberty to stand up to the British government. These men harnessed the outrage that spread following Parliament's Stamp Act of 1765, which charged an inner tax on the colonies. Though the Stamp Act was canceled, the disagreement over "taxation without representation" wouldn't drive away, consequential in events like the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party. The Sons of Liberty, a well-organized Patriot paramilitary political organization covered in secrecy, was established to weaken British rule in colonial America and
The activities of Nat Turner and John Brown were as legitimate, if not more so, than the actions taken by the self-proclaimed ‘Sons of Liberty’ to break ties with Great Britain. The American Revolution was founded in the transformation of ideas taken from the Enlightenment philosophers based on equality in self-governing. The colonists wanted to break from a country that not only protected them but supplied them with necessities through trade. These people never lost their freedom to move or to work at jobs they wanted. It took an exceptional group of leaders to voice the ideas of insurrection based on freedom from governing suppression.
“We are outraged and heartbroken over today’s verdict,” said Benjamin Todd Jealous, president of the N.A.A.C.P. “We stand with Trayvon’s family and we are called to act. We will pursue civil rights charges with the Department of Justice, we will continue to fight for the removal of Stand Your Ground laws in every state and we will not rest until racial profiling in all its form is outlawed.”
“Black Lives Matter” —an intended progression in society without a hierarchy, merely marching forward by spur of the people. Started by three sisters who continue to keep the organization a chapter-based, left wing social justice operation, it can best be described as “Not a moment, but a movement” by those that follow it. The case that began this outcry involved a man —George Zimmerman— whom, according to Lizette Alvarez and Cara Buckley (2013), “was found not guilty [of] second-degree murder [and] was also acquitted of manslaughter, a lesser charge.” (para. 1). Since its initial start in 2013, the movement follows and protests against police brutality and civil injustice towards individuals of the Black minority; however, this is a prime example of hate breeding hate as the movement, has opened a new floodgate full of antipathy aimed towards the White-community and Law Enforcement Officials. In short, the initial idea of “Black Lives Matter” —which is to bring civil justice to the Black-community— is a good concept, but the execution by its adherents are, ironically, bigoted; the movement needs to either evolve its state of thought or disperse before it further segregates America.
EVEN IN THE SPLINTERED AND OFTEN FRACTIOUS world of social justice movements, Black Lives Matter doesn't fit easily into existing categories. Few grassroots uprisings have done as much, in such a short period of time, to focus attention on long-neglected issues of racial justice, gender, and economic inequality. Yet so far, BLM has not followed up on its initial victories by building the kind of lasting, hierarchical organizations that grew out of the civil rights movement; nor has it dedicated itself to a single, easily identifiable goal, like enacting the Voting Rights Act. How are we to make sense of organizers who themselves remain so loosely organized? And if Black Lives Matter isn't devoting itself primarily to bringing about substantive legal and legislative change, then how can it hope to transform its resistance into lasting and meaningful gains in human rights?
The Black Lives Matter movement has swept across America. It 's branched out with chapters in over 31 cities and held rallies and boycotts across the United States(Sidner). The Black Lives Matter movement started with the outrage of the death of a young man. It continues to take over headlines and raise awareness on police brutality and inequality. However, the movement has met resistance from the All Lives Matter group. This group thinks that Black Lives Matter is a movement to express hatred towards other races. However, statistics, the views of fellow citizens, and the overall purpose of the Black Lives Matter movement, can prove that the movement wasn 't meant to express hate on other races and that we need to support the movement instead of going against it.
In The Wire there are many institutions that are portrayed to the audience. From various institutions such police departments, schools, ship ports to the newspaper industry in which these all make an impact to the citizens of Baltimore. One character and institution that is worth noticing is detective Shakima “Kima” Greggs that works for the police department that is part of the criminal justice system. Kima starts out as a detective in Narcotics, working under Daniels, as being one of the most reliable detectives. As for her good work and dedication Daniels enlists her into a special investigation that deals with the Barksdale Organization.
