Dear, um, Kim Kardashian-West,
I recently read an article concerning a very expensive push present you asked from your husband, Kanye West, in November. In a KimKardashianWest.com post, you wrote, “This pregnancy, I would love a Lorraine Schwartz diamond choker, like the ones I've worn before to the Art + Film Gala.” You went on to say, “I like the idea of a push present—after nine months of pregnancy it's a sweet and well-deserved thank you. We women go through an entire pregnancy carrying a baby... of course it only makes sense that we get something amazing to show how amazing we are!” While I do agree with you, a women’s body does astonishing things, a push present? Really? I did some researcher on the infamous choker you were referring

Kardashian-West. I am convinced that probably no one in the entertainment and fashion industry has heard about the so called “Blood Diamonds.” To tell you the truth, I was unaware that some of the diamonds that are displayed shining in small boxes behind protected glass screens may sometimes have been created in muddy African mines and are extracted by people with the statute of slaves. When purchasing these extravagate gems, in no way do celebrities contemplate about the blood, sweat and tears that go into the extraction, usually under forced or very harsh labor, to be used in the dirty trade of these beautiful …show more content…
Two years later here in Kimberley, South Africa, an important meeting was held between representatives of all major diamond producing countries, and they discussed how they could put an end to the blood diamond trade. The result was a protocol establishing the international certificate system for diamond trade—the Kimberley Process. It has 75 member countries today. The organization issues a certificate of origin for every single diamond in the world. A diamond is considered illegal if it lacks this certificate. This was the tool for cleaning out the blood diamonds.” However, the Kimberley Process has not put an end to these conflicts. The system is still flawed in many ways. As critics advise, “The world certification system
The diamond industry impacts the people of West Africa by creating a whirlwind of corruption on a political level. In sierra Leone diamonds were a valuable part of the land and they were once legitimately sold up until Sierra Leone became independent in 1961. The following years of their independence corruption flooded the land. According to an online research paper it says “with that independence came corrupt leaders, manipulation of the people , rebel groups, rivalries and civil disputes”. The correlation implies that the diamond industry has created an environment that leaves people at risk of violence, and unfair treatment by their government. The longer the diamond industry is in effect, the longer West African people will suffer from the world market demanding diamonds. Because of globalization it doesn’t look
The process of producing the diamonds so they could be sold on the market involved many steps which were illustrated in the movie, Blood Diamond. Smugglers like Archer would supply the RUF with guns. The guns would be used by the RUF to intimidate the people of Sierra Leone into working as laborers for them, we see this with Solomon and his son. These men would be forced to dig in the water mines for hours a day searching for diamonds of all sizes. Then the diamonds are mixed with other diamonds all around the world, mixing the illegal ones with the legal ones; this was explained in the movie by Archer to Maggie. When the diamonds are mixed in with the others, no one can determine for certainty where each originated from. It is then distributed to nations where they are made into necklaces and bracelets, and no questions are asked.
There has being a global increase in the regulation regarding the use of conflict metals including introduction of guidelines regulations surrounding the importation and investment of metals and overseas mines.
Oh my god, please tell me you watched last nights episode of Keeping up with the Kardashians, I actually died, it was so funny. I’m in love with Kendall, oh my god, she is so pretty. Their getaway to Palm Springs looked so much fun!! I wish I could be just like them. Being able to travel the world to places like France, Italy, Greece, Costa Rica and much more, working with famous brands, living in million dollar mansions in Beverly Hills and having everything you could ever want, sounds perfect. But if you take a deeper look at it, the Kardashians have a pretty hard life. Like, I can’t even imagine how difficult it must be to plan all your photoshoots, vacations, keep up with your millions of followers on Instagram, all while trying to avoid paparazzi. (Verbal irony/sarcasm)
Kim Kardashian also known as “Kim K” shows how to live the American Dream in money and wealth. “[..] Kardashian’s brief marriage to professional basketball player Kris Humphries was turned into a reality television spectacle: the 2011 wedding reportedly earnered the couple nearly $18 million, though they divorced three months later.” (Istanders) This short marriage, seventy-two days exactly, brought money and fame to Kim. Instead of marrying Kris for love
Scaffold- The scaffold is a place where most of the important scenes in the Scarlet Letter take place. It was placed under Boston’s earliest church and was made of wood and iron. The scaffold is a place of shame and punishment for anyone in the community that commits a sin. It is the most public place in the Puritan society and used for torture of the sinners as they walk up the steps and stand there for hours at a time. In the beginning it is where Hester is placed to be publically humiliated in front of the people of Boston. She stood with Pearl while she was judged and singled out for her sin of adultery. This was part of her punishment, along with having to wear a scarlet letter “A” on her chest
In the documentary titled Nevsun in Eritrea: Dealing With a Dictator, the director Scott Anderson’s main topic of focus delves into Nevsun, which is a Canadian mining company that has formed a business partnership with the war-torn poor country of Eritrea in east Africa, or more importantly, with the Eritrean government that receives a 40% stake in profit from Nevsun’s mining operations. However, while the partnership on the surface may be seen as an overall boon for the country and its citizens it’s actuality all a façade and the partnership formed between the two has actually caused more harm than good. For example, the documentary touches upon multiple key elements: such as human rights violations workers have experienced working in the

It is said that sixty percent of the diamonds on the market are from Africa. How do we know if we have a blood diamond? It is very hard to tell just by looking at the diamond itself, but most jewelry store should have diamonds from the Kimberly process. This process helps to rid the world of blood diamonds by shipping them securely and giving them certificates but some blood diamonds do slip
Canada is home to some of the largest mining corporations in the world. In fact, seventy-five percent of the world’s mining companies are based in Canada (Dean, 2013). These companies are involved in the extraction of numerous resources, including silver, petroleum, bitumen and coal. Canadian mining operations also have a particular focus in gold, as twenty-one of the country’s top forty mining companies are involved in gold extraction. With billion dollar annual revenues and interests in almost every continent, these multinational companies are making a large impact around the globe (Canadian Mining Journal, 2014). However, these impacts are not necessarily positive. Canadian mining corporations have failed to implement CSR policies and

People say diamonds are a girl’s best friend. A friend that makes you happy and proud to have- but can you really trust them? What if you little “friend” on your dainty little finger not only cost a ridiculous amount of money but also cost the lives of innocent people? That would really make you reconsider buying a diamond and make you reconsider whom you trust. See, you really have to be careful where your sparkly, little gem comes from. Do you have any idea what it took just to make it to North America? Well, chances are 1000’s of children were killed or captured, people were torn away from their families and over 2.2 billion dollars were used just to smuggle those diamonds into developed countries.
Celebrities are a perfect example of people who can comfortably spends thousands on fashion. It can be seen all over T.V. or social media: celebrities at events such as award shows in multi-thousand dollar outfits. Some people believe it is all for image, but some may disagree and say that they spend it because they have the money to. Money spent on expensive designer brands is very commonly depicted in music by famous rappers. Rapper Lil Uzi Vert says in his song: “Early 20 Rager”, “Four-hundred dollars for a brand-new Gucci beanie” (“Lil Uzi Vert 25”). This lyric signifies a form of materialism through an influential artist asserting that he spends large amounts of money on designer brands, in this case, Gucci. Another rap artist, Jeremih, featured in G Herbo’s: “This N’ That” says “I mix my Balmain with Goyard” (“G Herbo 22”). Yet
