Former Mayor Bloomberg was one of the best things to happen to public health. I agree with his approaches in his efforts to make New York City a healthier place. His efforts made some improvements to the public health and he has the numbers to back him up. New York City had one of its fastest declines in the smoking rate while Bloomberg was in office. Since he took office, the city's smoking rate has dropped from 22% to just above 14%. The city has also become one of the safest, with the lowest murder rate of any big city in America. Deaths from traffic and fire are the lowest since the city started keeping records in 1916. In the Article, it highlights the topic of risks and rewards. This is exactly what Bloomberg takes with some of his approaches,
This public health policy paper will discuss and outline the Affordable Care Act (ACA) as well as barriers and controversies surrounding the policy and its relevance in nursing profession. The ACA will eventually affect everyone. Statistics reflecting United States health outcomes have proven the need for the initiation of policy formation within the United States healthcare system. “In March 2010, President Obama signed into law a comprehensive health reform, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA).” (Estes, Chapman, Dodd, Hollister, Harrington, 2013, p. 144) The ACA promotes preventive care—including related services and family planning—that should result in improved health outcomes and
Dr. David L. Katz, A clinical professor of public health, and director of the prevention research center at Yale University School of Medicine expresses his opinion on public smoking in the following passage.
I do not believe that as a shareholder I am entitled to receive private health information of a CEO or other top executives of the company in the extent that they are seriously ill. I believe this because of HIPAA laws. Any employee of a company no matter how high up the ladder they are everyone is covered by this law. This law states that it covers individuals past, present, or future physical or mental health or condition, the provision of health care to the individual, and the past, present, or future payment for the provision of health care to the individual. So by law the CEO and other top executives have the option to disclose their health issue or not just like any other person or employee has this right whether or not to disclose private health information. If a CEO or top executive is seriously ill, it is an issue between them and their family not shareholders as they need to figure out a plan for recovery. It is the same way, if the CEO or top executive is going through a divorce that is a personal family matter that does not involve the shareholders. If it is keeping them from participating in their daily duties in the company then that is when they need to talk to their boss, but not the shareholders as there will be way too many opinions, public talk/rumors, not what they need to be focused on. Therefore, I believe when dealing with a difficult family matter such as a divorce, a CEO should discuss the matter with other top executives to come up with the best
The documentary of Ed Edelman brought forth a politicians successful career, with numerous achievements helping the community, especially the impoverished, and help setting the foundations for numerous public entities. On the other hand, Dr. Williams, in the Sierra Health Foundation’s Speaker Series, had shown the shortcomings of the American health system, despite the United States being one of the biggest spenders of healthcare in the world. I’ve known that the American healthcare system is an expensive system and not everyone can afford healthcare, but the variance in quality of healthcare in a single city is outrageous. Dr. Williams had stated that the life expectancy in Washington D.C can differ by a few years as you traverse the metro stations.
Dominique Robert’s (2008) theoretical framework in the article “Prison and/as Public Health. Prison and Inmates as Vectors of Health in the New Public Health Era. The Case of Canadian Penitentiaries” focuses on structural elements that explain the use of correctional health care in the prison setting today and how this plays a role in the broader public health strategies in the outside community. He does this by explaining factors such as “the mobilisation of prison as a tool for the new public health” and "the production of inmates into healthcare ‘consumers’, along with the role of actuarial justice.”
An optamaligist known as Dr. Ralph Chu and Dr. Rex Hamilton have made some ground breaking discoveries in helping to prevent fading close up vision. They have made an amazing eye plant called the rain drop. The rain drop helps with reshaping the cornea so it can focus better and faster. One of the most important ways it helps people with close up vision is to be able to read better. According to Dr. Ralph Chu, “this is one of the most significant advances in apthomology in 20 years. The reason why it is so important is because it can remove the need for reading glasses in anyone that affected by presbyopia also known as the aging eye. The lenses costs 4000$ to get implanted are not covered by insurance.
When Bill de Blasio set his sights on becoming New York City’s 109th Mayor winning would align him with former bold policymakers. His most prolific Mayoral contributions will stand alongside Ed Koch’s policies that brought the City back from fiscal crisis after a recession. David Dinkins the only Black Mayor’s policies that successfully returned the City to calm after rioting occurred in Crown Heights. Rudy Giuliani’s policies a major guiding force after 911. In addition, Michael Bloomberg’s policies which increased tourism in NYC to unprecedented levels. Mayor Bill de Blasio’s greatest legacy is his arsenal of policies City of New York Office of the Mayor. (2017) that removed the barriers of income inequality for all New Yorkers. Thereby,
One global health challenge is the deficit in the amount of health professionals globally. Crisp and Chen (2014) acknowledge that the faltering amount of health professionals are being stressed by “demographic changes, epidemiologic shifts, and redistribution of the disability burden”. Worldwide, anyone is capable of suffering from global warming or diseases. Becoming a health professional requires knowledge of many ailments and diseases and in order to assess this information, they need to attend school. With how interconnected science and technology has become, health professionals are now traveling for the enterprise. Their patients are also traveling for medical treatment. Twenty-five percent of doctors in the United States are from overseas. Medical tourism to countries such as Thailand and Singapore are increasing at twenty percent per year. The education of a health professional varies from region to region. The schooling of most health professionals varies country to country. In the United States, it’s four years of university and then another four years of medical school. In the UK, the regimen is between five to six years of post-high school education. The number of doctors in the world is 9.2 million, nurses are 18.1 million. The US has 4% of the world’s doctors and 17% of the world’s nurses. Future projections estimate that by 2020, that there will be an insufficient amount of doctors and nurses and will get even worse by 2025. Countries such as India, China,

According to Charles-Edward A. Wilson, in the book Introduction to Public Health, public health’s main goals are to prevent disease and promote health (Schneider 2017). He further states that this is a “science and an art” (2017). The science behind public health works is data collection and statistics interpretation. The art is the discovery and subsequent tracking of mysterious, alongside known, illnesses leading to sustainable solutions for the communities prolonged life and well-being. Although there have been highly successful advances in public health’s goals since its conception, funding remains lower than what may be necessary due to the controversies associated with what could be deemed socialist notions. Public health efforts have somewhat intangible benefits which do not always translate well to the visible costs.
The both of publications illustrate the relationship and collaboration between public health and managed care, advantages and disadvantages of managed care. If I were the editor of this journal I would select article two for publication for several reasons. Article 2 states a complete and obvious perspective about managed care. It provided a completely definition of managed care and its functions. In addition, it illustrates the convincing example for cooperation between public health and managed care. As mentioned in the article two that the modern public health furnishes many services such as immunization, protection from environmental hazards and so on. Those services cannot be provided without managed care or the health care delivery system.
Essential public health services – is more of innovative solutions to health problems, also responsible for a competent public and personal health care workforce, it link people with needed personal health service and provision of health care when unavailable. To run it smoothly I need a sound leadership skill at all level.
Mr. Lamphier had great advice on ways the public can communicate with legislators and influence public health policy, which is also along the same guidelines for nursing. Know who your representatives are for the house, senate, county and school district level. Support a candidate either financially or through campaigning. Build relationships utilize the spring and summer months when the representatives are not in legislation to make contact and offer your nursing expertise. The bills that do not pass in the 40 days of the legislative period will need to start over and usually lobbying will start after the session ends. This is the time to find out how
While the ACA makes health insurance required by law increasing the number of people in the U.S. who have health insurance, it also has elements which do not completely benefit the patient, provider or insurance completely and is therefore “watered down.” There are many reasons for this. One of the reasons is that the ACA had a lot of money that was spent on lobbyists. This was illustrated in the ACA video shown in class. From that video it became known that Obama had to have “buy-ins” with many congress people for them to vote for the ACA bill. There were several congress people with ties to special interest groups, lobbyists and corporations. Parts of the ACA were therefore negotiated in order to satisfy multiple groups resulting in a “watered-down” product. Another important element was the fact that public health is not properly funded to address many of the health care needs such as disease prevention with only a small percentage of funding going to public health. This emphasizes the point that there is minimal importance given to this sector in health care. Lastly, the ACA faced the challenge due to the same opposition and concerns from the past. Concerns such as maintaining privatized insurance, paying the cost of this reform on the nation, and increasing the burden on employers.
Cities are amongst the greatest of human creations. The definition of a healthy city by the World Health Organization is one that continually creates, improves its physical and social environment and expands the community resources that enable people to mutually support each other in performing all the functions of life and developing to their maximum potential. (‘’What is a healthy city?’’) Such that, the health is a crucial factor in shaping a healthy living environment as it can be a clear indicator showing the quality of life of the city. In the 21st century, the city is managed and organised by the government in order make sure the city is operating efficiently and healthily to provide an ideal living environment for residents. It is controversial that what area should the city take care of the individuals while health is mentioned most of the time. In many studies and researches, the case happened in history, and present-days has indicated that the city should take responsibility for the health of its individual in the 21st century.
