I chose to write my reflection paper on reading number twenty-two “Bodies, Machines, and Male Power.” This chapter is written by M. Carme Alemany Gomez. This article talks about washing machines, and how most people only think the value of a washing machine is cleanliness. This article shows that there are diverse ways in which how gender and class, affect the design, operation, and construction of washing machines in Spain. Also how technology reinforced these relationships. They talk about the process of washing clothes when males designed the machines. Women had to learn the very movements that she must do repeatedly while using the machine. If women were given a voice during the beginning stages perhaps the technology would have been designed differently. When someone is designing or building a technology, they make decisions about some details that affect the users. As we all know the washing machine has been around for quite some time. The models we see today have taken at least 40 years of work and changes to get to where they are today. This study is approached by three theories they expected to see class and gender relations in the life of a machine. Second they drew off a Chinese tradition of thought. Third gender relations were saw as “a set of power relationships that not only involve the construction of values, but also constitute a process of bodily submission, as evidence in postures, gestures and movements” (Gomez Pg. 390). Publication of books and periodical revealed to the public the problems that women endured within their homes, education, labor, and health. In a male dominant society, men premeditated what roles women should play at home. Women were perceived as weaker than men, unable to think for themselves and their opinions were view as useless. Male dominating view of a woman’s role was to have no other aspirations but to take care of her husband, family and home.
For the longest time, women’s role in society was very narrow and set in stone. Women weren’t given the chance to decide life for their own, and there was a very sharp distinction of gender roles. Women were viewed as inferior, weak, and dependant. They were expected to be responsible for the family and maintainance of the house. But as the 19th century began, so did a drastic change in society. Women started voicing their opinions and seeking change. Trying to break away from this ideology called “cult of domesticity” was a lengthy, burdensome, and demanding struggle.
Women working men’s jobs were not as welcomed in society as they were in factories. People held on to the belief that women should be house wives and not have to do much in the way of work. The man should provide for the family, and the women should take care of the family. Many of the women who worked were lower class and had to help provide for their families, or were the only providers for their families. Women who worked men’s jobs were looked down upon and thought to be no better than dirt. Although women working in factories were still women, men did not show them the same respect as they did a woman working as a secretary or teacher.
Major Claim: The objectification and “currency” of a women’s body is the pivotal focus for the readings presented in class. It is discussed in the readings about how women are only considered for their looks, and not their personal depth or knowledge. Additionally, intersectionality is observed and how these objectifications effect marginalized groups. Finally, the term of enlightened sexism is introduced and how this concept is dangerous to and reverses feminism.
Countries around the world suffer from gender inequality. In many different situations women find themselves being controlled by men. Some men treat women as lesser beings, and act as if women do not deserve the same rights as men. Sally and Esperanza’s grandmother face the harsh tolls that come with gender inequality. In The House on Mango Street, Cisneros emphasizes gender inequality through the perceived role of men and women on Mango Street.
In “Manhood: The Elusive Goal”, Mark Gerzon argues that masculinity, or the "masculine code of conduct" is exemplified by smoking, drinking, and violence- acts that would be generally frowned upon in society. Mark Gerzon, attended Harvard University and was considered to be a best selling author by his senior year, due to his book "The Whole World is Watching: A Young Man Looks at Youth Dissent". Gerzon generally writes about topics dealing with men and masculinity in regard to modern day society. There are many companies in the world today that put an idea of this perfect female body into the heads of women. These images lead to a faulty standard men hold of women and their bodies and that women strive to become. Margaret Atwood addresses the issue of the way men view the female body by writing her essay in the viewpoints of a male so the reader can better understand how the expectation men have of the female body is unrealistic. First, she uses an allusive comparison to show the male expectation of the female body and how it is objectified as if it were a doll that comes with accessories. Next, she uses an anecdote with defamiliarization to show how the way the father views a Barbie doll and the way it portrays the female body to young girls is hypocritical. Lastly, Margaret Atwood uses insidious diction to talk about how men not only view the female body as a product but how they also use the female body as a product which can be sold amongst businessmen. In The Female Body, Margaret Atwood uses many rhetorical devices to convey how the female body is viewed through the eyes of men.
What makes a man, a “man”? Is it how much money he makes? The car he drives? The life he lives? Or, the amount of “Masculinity” that he shows? These are some of the stereotypical question that becomes the ideas of what men should have or strive to achieve. In Post-Princess Models of Gender: The New Man in Disney/Pixar by Ken Gillam and Shannon R. Wooden, they bring forth the ideas/thought of what the characteristic of men should be, by the overly influential control Disney and Pixar have on us and our future generation. Similar to what Matthew Immergut, in his article Manscaping: The Tangle of Nature, Culture and the Male Body, they both share ideas on the thought of man. The argument addressed in the question is either the way we view masculinity should be changed or not to determine us as men. In which the answer is, yes it should. Male or man, is a gender identity which show/ categorize, us separate from our female counterpart, Female or woman. But then are criticized on their place a “males” by getting in situation the emasculate them. Just because men independent or allowing for help, either overly sensitive or possess a lack of emotion, or whether or not “he” shaves his body or not should deter what the worlds thought on his masculinity
The physical body has been seen as many things both positive and negative. It can be thought of as the temple which houses the soul or can be seen as entrapping, like a cage of flesh. More often it seems that the body, especially women’s bodies, are looked at in more complicated ways than the bodies of men. As I grew up, it began to feel more and more like my body, and the bodies of other women, did not actually belong to us like we believed. Through my Women’s Studies class I have gained more knowledge on the body as a political object. In this essay I will examine six different articles with the similar theme of women’s bodies, the expression of those bodies and how by using feminism as a political standpoint they gain power and ownership of their bodies.
According to Margaret Atwood in The Female Body, a woman’s body is used in today’s culture “to sell and advertise products”. These products vary from “door knockers, bottle openers, clocks with ticking bellies, lampshades, and nutcrackers”. By having stores sell these items they are completely promoting the objectification of women to help sell their goods and services which is down right direful. How are women expected to ever be treated equal if business’ continue to sell discriminatory product, lessening the view of the female anatomy. Materialistic items are not the only way a female’s body is exploited in today’s culture. Aside from bottle openers and clocks, women are universally seen as a “renewable” sex symbol The Female Body (pg. 1013 para. 6) especially in magazines.
Throughout this paper I will be discussing the role of women in the American society. I will reference the importance of gender and gender inequality. The definition of gender aims to clarify for of all the historical framework of the topic, the role of women in the American society. The paper will lead from the role women were given around World War II and then transition into the role women can now choose in the American society today. Addition to the role of women I will also discuss the differences of how the genders are treated in the same places, for example work place. Men and women are culturally molded when referring to gender in the American society. The gender roles play a lead part into how the model family, education, and liberty are. The reason I chose to write about this topic is due to my strong belief that although I don’t agree with the characteristics society gave to gender, I do believe in gender equality.
Women and men have had certain roles in society that were understood amongst them to be specified for their particular gender. Males were known to have the leading role as head of the house hold and the bread winner while the woman’s duty was to stay at home and take care of the house and children. While many people years ago deemed this way of life and practice to be the right and ethical thing to do, times have changed and so this kind of treatment towards a woman’s equality must be questioned. Even though times have changed, this mindset of a woman’s ability to be as good as a man has not completely gone away. In today’s society a woman contributes to the economy and her family as equally as that of a man. Therefore, women should share equal rights and opportunities as their gender counterparts.
True womanhood created an ideology that was very beneficial to the textile industry (Hapke, 2001) as it was based strictly on a profit driven management system, which viewed its workers as factory hands rather than domestic workers. Lowell Mills was a company that used this ideology to it’s full potential. The making of a product was broken down into specific categories so that each person had a specific task and repeated that task over and over and over again. Instead of one person making a product from start to finish, each person was given one task to perform repeatedly. For example one person would be spinning the yarn while the next worker would be weaving cloths (Hapke, 2001). This would increase productivity so that products could be manufactured at a more efficient rate that would generate more profit.
Gender roles is a very controversial topic in today’s society, especially when it comes to working. 100 years ago, in Europe, women were working long hours in factories. Women also worked as nurses, cleaned wealthy people 's homes, and were craftswomen. Meanwhile, 100 years ago in the United States women were expected to stay home and take care of the family/home, while the men went out and worked an average of ten hours a day for six days a week, compared to the traditional five day weeks and 8 hour days.
