Working as the Student Body President has been an extremely rewarding experience. It has given me the opportunity to engage with my peers, the school administration and local business leaders on a level that I never imagined. One of my first accomplishments was gaining the principal’s approval to update the school dress-code - a major coup for a highschool campus. This helped me to cement the support of my classmates.
Later, in an effort to raise school spirit, I solicited the financial support of local businesses and secured partnerships that resulted in donations of over $1,000 in prizes. These donations were used as weekly prizes for students that actively participated in school spirit activities. These prizes were extremely effective at encouraging students to engage and participate. Additionally, I made contact with the manager of a local music artist (from America’s Got Talent and The Rap Game), King Roscoe. I thought that it would really boost school spirit if I could have him perform for our student body at the annual

Following church, I immediately reached out to my principal and encouraged her to support an effort to adopt a high school in the Houston, TX area that had been adversely affected by Hurricane Harvey. We worked together and adopted C.E. King High school in Houston, TX and quickly began the process of raising awareness of this cause, throughout our school and our community. We led a drive to collect donations from Hillgrove Students as well as local middle and elementary schools. Through these efforts, we were able to collect over 90 boxes of donations of school supplies, clothes, shoes and backpacks. Additionally, we were able to gain a donation of support from UPS and they agreed to transport all of the donations from our school in Cobb County, GA almost 800 miles to C.E. King High School in Houston,
I'm raising money for an underfunded K-8 charter school in Philadelphia called the Cornerstone Christian Academy, and I'd like to invite you to join me in my efforts. Cornerstone provides a safe and nurturing learning environment for students who often come from low income, at risk neighborhoods. It is an organization that I think really deserves our support. If you would like to donate to the students of Cornerstone or simply want to learn more about the cause, click the link listed below to see my fundraising page on the Cornerstone Christian Academy website. The smallest of donations can make a huge
Every year, Mrs. McIntire hosted a fundraiser to purchase goats and cows for the families in Kenya. Throughout the fundraiser, she would display photos of past recipients and those in need. Also, she would show us videos of their housing conditions and tell us stories of their hardships. My class raised enough money to purchase a goat, but I wanted to do more. Alongside a friend, I collected my children's books and hosted a book sale during
Recently, the Chick-fil-A Leadership Academy asked me to organize an event for a charitable cause. I recommended we host a fundraising concert for the family of a coma-stricken local 5th grade student recently hit by a school bus.
Austin’s kindness and selflessness towards Chris has inspired me to help children in my community. In 2014, I contacted Make-A-Wish in Fresno, California to get involved. I organized a service project in conjunction with Make-A-Wish where fifteen of my peers from high school and I participated in a “send-off” of a Wish Kid to Disneyland. My peers and I made posters
Over the years the Pen Argyl Area school board has done some great things. In recent years though, they have been making some big changes involving the students. The dress code at Pen Argyl Area School District has majorly changed. Every year the same incident happens with a different student. They head to class with a certain item of clothing, a pair of shorts, or a wild hairstyle and then, the phone rings. Soon the student is out of class and in the office. Dress codes in school may seem like a great idea, but soon will turn into a disaster. If the dress code becomes less strict then there will be less disciplinary infractions throughout the year, it will be less cost effective for the parents when buying their children clothing, and the dress code is mainly geared towards what the girls can and can not wear.
As We watch Hurricane Harvey and Irma ripping through our nation coastline causing billions of dollars of damages. As college students and Americans, I think it's our civic duty to help one another. A bunch of Illinois college student organization has come to together with ideas to help our fellow Americans that are affected by this natural disaster. We would appreciate if the professor would be involved with our service. So, our goal is to raise $250 by students donating their money and if that goal is meet professors who sign up who will have to get their face thrown by pies. It would greatly appreciate it if you could participate as many students adore and respect
We felt there was a huge urgency to help then and in the future. We started to act on the matter along with help from our fellow peers in the Honors College at North Campus in order to help those affected by Hurricane Irma. We are in the process of collecting items such as non perishable foods, clothing, textbooks, diapers, etc.. In addition, we are planning to create an encouraging video with the students and staff in the Honors College at North Campus to express kindness, love, hope, and encouragement. We want to send a warm and impactful message from
The presidents has always played a crucial role in American politics and are known for their roles in unifying the nation. They are glorified for their charisma and ability to lead, but even these brilliant men have lapses in their judgement. Andrew Jackson, who was president from 1829-1837, was a president of many firsts as he was the first frontier president, first to have a “kitchen cabinet”, and first to use a pocket veto. Jackson was later succeeded by his vice president, Martin Van Buren. Van Buren, who was in office from 1837-1841, was known for his shrewd political skills. Both these men laid down the foundations for a stronger, more centralized national government with methods that garnered mixed responses.
Throughout my life, I’ve always had an immense interest in helping others. Being involved in the National Charity League for 5 years has given me the opportunity to be involved with charities that I otherwise would’ve never known about. I’ve had the privilege to help with over b charities in and around my community throughout my years as an NCL member. By far my favorite would have to be Grace’s Feed Our Kids that I have volunteered at every summer since my start in NCL. Through this charity, we are able to provide lunches and fun games to underprivileged kids in Grapevine during the unbearably hot Texas summer days. Each day we serve different meals, either donated from local restaurants or homemade by my NCL class, and have a variety of things for the kids to do, like coloring, water guns,
Harvey has made possible for me would be enough to keep a person busy for a lifetime, but I am not her only student. She affectionately calls every student in the department her “kid” and I have personally watched her distribute forks, spoons, change for snack machines, markers, hugs, or any other supply in her office (which is a supply store in and of itself) to any student who may be in need. This compassion has earned her the nickname “mom” in the by students in the department, and anyone you ask would have a response much similar to my own. Despite her bottomless gratitude, she never expects repayment. Instead, she only asks that we “pay it forward” and bring the same level of love and compassion to our own future classrooms; her emphasis is on the “ripple effect” growth; I feel this is the mark of a true
In late October of 2012 Hurricane Sandy hit many New York City boroughs and several parts of New Jersey. My community and many others were greatly affected. Homes around me were destroyed, people in my community were killed, and some families lost everything. My high school was a shelter for those who were severely affected from October 23rd my high school were asking for volunteers and my older brother and I were there amongst hundreds giving out food collecting clothing articles, blankets, toys, anything to help others. The hardest part was seeing my high school teachers crying educators who were emotionally unstable and had no place to go. The town of Tottenville was terribly affected by hurricane sandy, houses on the shore were gone,
On April 26, 2017 I was made eighth grade secretary. Last year Mrs. Trimble, our advisor, just had us in her advisory. Thirty minutes a week to organize immense school functions for a little over one-thousand students wasn’t enough time, imagine that. This year we have student council as an elective class, so we are allowed more time to do what we need to. This is extremely nice because we have a lot to do as a board. Student council positions in high school can open up opportunities to apply for scholarships and prepare you for future jobs. Soon enough, I’ll start thinking about those possibilities, but all the worry is worth
A series of wildfires started by two careless teenagers dangerously spread through Gatlinburg, Tennessee and caused a lot of damage, even leading to the death of fourteen individuals. A church in the community burnt down and I felt the need to use my influence to aid that congregation. As president of the National Honors Society, I organized a series of hat days that involved students paying a dollar in order to wear a hat at school. It was a success and we managed to raise $218 which through the handiwork of my English teacher was quadrupled to
It's that time of the year again, back to school. As much as I'll miss my 15 year old daughter, I am so glad that we are back in session, that is unless we're talking about the Dress Code Blues. It is the third day of school today. My daughter casually informed us that she has already seen ten students get "dress coded". Now, the paraprofessional in me knows that you have to start the school year off strong. You enforce the rules early, and can relax a little once they are established and being followed. That's how it works in so many places, from group homes to high schools.
The problem that is taking place in Alvord High is that the enforcement of the dress code is an unfair and prejudice act that has no viable reasoning to why it was put in place to begin with. An interview with the Principal of our school revealed a lot about what goes on inside the “Great” minds of our school.
