This is a letter to the editor of the article, "Louisiana Marshall Convicted in Boys Fatal Shooting" written by Ray Sanchez, about the tragic shooting of a boy by a U.S. Marshall. Derrick Stafford was convicted of manslaughter after drawing his gun, and firing into a car after a pursuit. Six year old, Jeremy Mardis, was hit by five bullets and died on scene.
It was a very tragic situation, an officer should always know who/what they are shooting at every time they pull the trigger. It is a hard story to read and the radio talk amongst the police is even worse. After the officers had fired their weapons, in the graphic footage from one of the officers body cams, you could hear the two officers talking. An officer can be heard in the footage
In this case, we start of with the story of Amadou Diallo, a 22 year old immigrant from West Africa, living in a neighborhood in the Bronx New York, who was shot and killed by the four members of the local police. The police at the time was merely patrolling the area, when they came across Amadou Diallo, unfortunately Diallo resembled a suspect that the police was tracking at the time. The police ordered Diallo to remain still, but he instead reached his hand into it pant pockets, the police instinctive reacted to that movement, possibly being highly aware that Diallo could be armed and is ready to open fire. The police responded and fire in total 44 rounds, 19 of this shots hit Diallo causing him to die at the scene. It was after they found out that he was not armed, any charges to the four offices were dismissed and they were free from any wrongdoing in this case.
Officers are just protecting themselves. Tamir Rice a twelve-year-old black boy was shot and killed. Tamir rice of ohio was carrying a toy gun and aimed it at police. He was then shot by the officer(Ochs p3). If a person no matter what age is going to raise a gun at a cop the the cop is going to react by drawing his weapon.John Crawford of ohio was also shot by police. John walked into walmart carrying an air rifle police arrived and told him to put it down he did not so he was shot (Ochs ). If a person is carrying around a gun the police are not going to mess around they are going to take care of the threat. 38-year-old Richard Ramirez was gunned down by police. He was sitting in his car and reached down at his waistband the officer then
This case provides the story of the fatal shooting of Laquan McDonald (17 years) in Chicago by Police Officer Jason Van Dyke on or about October 21, 2014. McDonald died after having been shot 16 times late on that evening by Van Dyke as he and others responded to a report of a man armed with a knife breaking into vehicles in a truck yard (CQ Research, 2016). McDonald, who had a record of juvenile arrests, allegedly refused the officers’ demands to drop his knife (CQ Research, 2016). After 400 days of the incident, the video from a police vehicle showed that McDonald, who was holding a knife was walking parallel, but away from the officers when he was shot 16 times by Van Dyke (Police Charges, 2015). The public has a right to know as much as possible about the rules governing the police and about investigations into allegations of police misconduct. Transparency holds police accountable and accountability builds trust in Police Department.
There are a lot of incidents that happen between police, and criminals. Always a mix up, confusion, miscommunication, and sadly, police brutality, but police always get the benefit of the doubt because of lack of evidence. A incident happened way back in around 2009, it was actually on January 1st. A twenty-two year old young man named Oscar Grant was shot at Fruitvale Station, by an officer that “thought” he was using a taser, but actually used a gun. If that officer would have had a body camera on, he would’ve been more aware of what he was doing, and he would have been caught sooner because they would have been able to see, and tell that Grant wasn’t being defiant.
This case was one of the few that ended in a positive conviction of the officer. In many cases, it ends after the first trial and the officer gets off with out even going to jail. This police officer committed a terrible crime and his job was to protect the public, not kill them. It's impossible for us to
The officer was called to assist the woman’s son but instead he was murdered. Police officers use their weapons under any circumstances. Officers need to be trained to deal with any situation, even an emergency of a mentally ill person without having to go as far as shooting someone all because he felt threatened. There needs to be new training exercise provided for the police departments to help reduce the murders and harassment against minorities based on the inability to handle someone.
This is not the first officer killed in the United States but this is the 20th police officer killed this year and it is a disturbing thing to have our law enforcers
The first article I read was “Wounded Manhattan Beach Police Officer Recounts Chaos in Las Vegas.” The article was about police officer who gets shot at the Las Vegas shooting while trying to save people. The shooting was at a concert and nobody heard the gun fire till someone was shot. During the shooting there were multiple victims. A lot of people died, but some just got wounded. Even though the police officer got shot he still wanted to help out and did. Many lives were saved including his.
Officer-involved shootings are some of the most complex cases to document. A lot of questions need to be answered after an officer-involved shooting. Such as, Could lethal force have been avoided? Who was truly threatened, the officer or the suspect? How could the incident have been avoided?
Many people grow up to believe that police officers are here to protect citizens and to serve the community. Police officers are sometimes seen as community heroes for stopping a bank robber or saving a child that was in a harmful place and they are praised as a superhero. Many people forget that cops are also human beings and with every human being they have a dark side to them. There isn’t stating that everybody has a bad side but some people do and they could be an officer of the law. Many people say and hear the cops using excessive force or abusing their power but one thing is saying it and another is seeing it. By seeing and capturing what the officer was doing on video we could say that the officer did its duty legally or illegally.
Lately, there has been a lot news on police brutality. All the citizens hear about is the person that is supposedly the victim. Yet, till this day, I still have not heard the side from the police force. Media gets out faster than the facts. Media is no longer based on facts, but based off of opinions of others. We assume because a few police officers are corrupt, that all of them are. Most of them aren’t terrible. Their human just like we are. Some assume the people that are assaulted, because they just feel like it. There has to be a reason why that police officer attacked a certain someone.
The kid was in the streets with hands in his pocket, and a police officer approached him at gun point. The teen put his hands in the air and then the officer shot him dead. Major controversy occurred due to this tragedy. Only for the reason that the teen did not deserve to die and did nothing wrong, but still paid the price. How could this have been prevented? If the officer knew or was reminded of the steps to take in a situation like that, then the whole thing would have been handled way better. And the only way for officers to learn their training is in the police
When reading this case you have to take it back to the abuse of human rights and how to properly proceed the evidence that will allow the violators to be accountable for their actions. The story clearly analyzes on how the shooting in New Orleans on the Danziger Bridge in 2005 occurred. At this time it was during the wake of Hurricane Katrina were two victims were killed and four others were injured ((Bohm & Haley, 2014) when crossing the Danziger bridge these six bystanders were killed and injured by the hands of a police officer's. However, these officers failed to mention the use of deadly force against six unarmed citizens. Arthur Kaufman was among one of the officers that made the attempt to cover up the crime (Bohm & Haley, 2014)
I was surprised that there was not a big riot about the whole situation. I will say that at least the jury took the side of the victim rather than taking the side of the officer. I would have liked to have known what was Chafin punishment if there
From the first to the last video, you can see the police immediately firing their weapons. Instead of firing their weapons at first instance they could’ve choose to approach the situation differently. In one video, an officer is said to have shot a dog as soon as he came in contact with it and is labeled as having “trigger fingers”. As for Walter Scott, you see him running from the officer as the officer was chasing him and continuously shot him until he fell to the ground when more could’ve been done to apprehend him. In an effort to prevent these events from occurring, police accountability is a must as usually the officers that one sees in the news aren’t held accountable for their actions. All they’re given is a slap on the wrist and then
