As you enter Brett whiteleys studio in Sydney you are overwhelmed with his experinces and feel as if you are standing in whiteleys imagination. The high white and wide spread room creates a blank canvas like space, and the opportunity to take a journey with the artworks like whitely would have travelled creating them. You can feel the intamiacy and heart, put into in the artworks as you step into not only his gallery but his home showing art was truly his life. Studio walls covered in quotes, photographs and sovenirs scattered along to bookshelf and you discover that you are experiencing what influenced and inspired whitely in creation of the series “other places”

If it was in the back of a cab sketching the buildings of new York or the glancing over the roof tops of Paris, whiteley translated his visions actively in the environemnts which he travels giving him a spark above other competitive artists.
"Drawing is the art of being able to leave an accurate record of the experience of what one isn't, of what one doesn't know. A great drawer is either confirming beautifully what is commonplace or probing authoritatively the unknown.”
1989 Whiteley created ‘the Great Dog pisses of Paris’. This piece is on a large scale with yellow ‘piss’, brown and mustard tones using pencil, plaster, paint and subtle uses of collage. Whitely didn’t glorify paris in this works at all. This artwork challenges the mainstream of ideas of what art should be with his choice of colour and the semi-abstract depth illustrated. What distincts whiteley as an artist is how he doesn’t censor the real world. Commonly you will find artists just draw what everyone one would like to see, if it’s a vibrant sunset or a pictureasque cityscape but whiteley goes for the mundane
