In the book The Martian written by Andy Weir it is story about a man named Mark Watney. Mark is a martian which is left behind on mars by his crew. His crew believing that he was dead because a satellite hit him and they could not find him in the dust storm. The dust storm is the reason why his crew left because it was to dangerous. Mark finds himself alive after being hit by the satellite and finds ways to communicate with crew on earth. He faces problems that if not solved may lead to his own death. For example in the book he needs to find ways to make more food, to be able to survive until he finds a way to communicate with his crew on earth. NASA finds out throughout the book that he is still alive through satellite images and communicate
Imagine this. Sand pelts at your suit and the glass dome that surrounds your head. Wind whips violently all around, and the air is stale. You crack your eyes open to a dry, barren-land with a chill running down your spine, and only one knowledge comes to mind. You are alone. This is how it would feel to step into Mark Watney’s shoes. Told in a comical and thrilling science fiction novel, “The Martian,” by Andy Weir creates a situation in which Mark Watney, the main character, is accidentally left on Mars due to a violent sandstorm, resulting in NASA having to evacuate their mission early without him. Where Mark is thrust in a situation where he must survive, I believe that when thrown into a situation like so, moping only fails you, and perseverance
The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury displays a variety of themes that relate to topics such as isolation, loneliness, and isolations. A quote that accurately portrays the theme of man vs. the natural world comes from the chapter And The Moon Be Still As Bright. The quote is as follows: “We Earth men have a talent for ruining big, beautiful things.” (Bradbury 77)
Tension, humor, and foreshadowing are some examples of elements that readers will find in The Martian. In The Martian, astronaut Mark Watney is left behind on Mars. Because of a dust storm, Mark's teammates believe that he is dead and left him behind. The Martian is a science fiction book that gives readers an idea of how people might be able to colonize Mars and gives readers an idea of what space is like. The Martian has an author that self-published his book, and who used humor and foreshadowing to keep his readers engaged.
The movie, “The Martian,” by Ridley Scott is about an astronaut who’s trying to survive on an empty and lonely planet. The astronaut surviving on the planet Matt Damon, also known as Mark Watney. After his crew left him because they thought he was dead during a strong storm, Mark finds himself abandoned and lonely on a desolate planet. Mark try’s to send a message back to earth that he is still alive on the empty planet. NASA puts in non-stop work and fights to bring him back home. In the end, he returns back to Earth safely.
During the period after the Industrial Revolution the rich Western nations of the world began their imperialist expansion, racing to colonize any “unclaimed” territories. All of the colonized regions had their own culture and government, but because the West was so much stronger, they were taken over. When these areas were finally freed from years of oppression, their society was left in shambles and much of their culture was destroyed. Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles explores this theme of imperial expansion as applied to the hypothetical situation of humans colonizing the planet Mars. In the novel, the humans who flock to the planet are portrayed as reckless beings with no care for their new home. They destroy ruins, clear the
The Martian is arguably one of my favorite books because of the fantastic tone and character development. The Martian follows Mark Watney, a scientist who majored in botany and mechanical science. He get stranded on mars after a dust storm knocks out communications with NASA and the rest of his crew leaves when they believe he is dead from shrapnel in the storm.

The Martian Chronicles, by Ray Bradbury, is a science-fiction book and was written in 1946. This major work by Bradbury is a collection of short stories relating to Mars or Martians. Bradbury had a clear vision of the Mars in which these stories are set. His vision was one of a fantasy world from the Martians point of view. In this work, the humans from Earth are the aliens from outer space. Bradbury has won many awards including the O. Henry Memorial Award, the Benjamin Franklin Award, the Aviation-Space Writers Association Award, the World Fantasy Award for lifetime achievement, and the Grand Master Award from the Science Fiction Writers of America. Bradbury supported his awards
People choose to see the best aspects in things and but some tend to see the worst. In The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury, the plot is represented as optimistic, but also pessimistic. Bradbury is portrayed his ideas as a pessimistic because he brought the idea of that man is parasitic and ruins the environment wherever he goes, he presents the transition of the Martian culture with the Earthling’s, and reveals the destruction of Earth as the atomic war broke out.
In 2035, NASA astronaut Mark Watney, a botanist and mechanical engineer, has been left stuck on Mars after the crew of the Ares 3 mission were forced to evacuate from their Martian habitat (in Acidalia Planitia due to an intense dust storm with high winds. Watney was impaled by satellite dish during the evacuation and believed dead. His injury are minor, but with no way to contact Earth, Watney must rely on his own skills to survive. He begins a log of his experiences for those who might discover it long after his death. Watney begins growing potatoes in the crew's Martian habitat (or Hab) and burns hydrazine to make water. NASA discovers that he is alive when satellite images of the landing site show evidence of his activities; they begin working on ways to rescue him, but withhold the news of his survival from the rest of the Ares III crew, on their way back to Earth aboard the Hermes spacecraft, so as not to distract them.
Mark Watney in the book, The Martian by Andy Weir stayed on Mars for over a year and a half. Alone and hopeless, from the day he was stranded to the day he left, it was a never ending struggle to survive taking a deep toll on him mentally and physically. Mark Watney’s personality and attitude never changed, he took the worse of situations and lightened them up, while still understanding fully of the seriousness of them. Traumatizing events and life threatening circumstances never even phased Watney, he kept the same positive attitude throughout the entirety of the novel resulting in him being a static character and making little change throughout the book.
The red, rocky terrain. Dangerous volcanoes and deep, dark canyons slicing into the planet. Astronaut Mark Watney, stranded on Mars, wakes up suddenly after being unconscious for six Sols (days on Mars). After his crew abandons him, he believes he has no hope of survival whatsoever.
In 1940 a black man was lynched by whites for not addressing a white man as “sir”. In 1942 President Roosevelt sent Japanese-Americans away to camps because of racial prejudice from whites. In 1943 white mobs went around beating Latinos in America. In 1950 Ray Bradbury wrote Martian Chronicles, a book where humans migrate to Mars with no warm welcome from martians. Bradbury wrote his novel during the 1940’s a time where racism was no stranger. Racial injustice was happening left and right in America, which seemed to have influenced his writing. In The Martian Chronicles humans went to Mars to explore it. Eventually they found out that Mars was suitable for human life and began to colonize it. When humans first came many of the Martians were uncomfortable around humans. As the story goes on Martians start to take negative action towards the humans since they aren’t of the same kind. Martians and humans had a horrible relationship to start with but over time it improved vastly, just like white people with people of color in the US. White people were the martians while people of color are the humans except white people colonized POC land not vice versa. Ever since America was founded time and time again POC have been used and abused, which could have been the inspiration for the novel. Bradbury wrote the Martian Chronicles during the 1940’s; a time when African Americans were lynched, Japanese American citizens were sent away to camps, and
Throughout the Movie “The Martian” it seemed like if something could go wrong, it did, and while they all pulled through there was still many problems faced. In a movie about an astronaut who finds himself accidentally abandoned on Mars after he was thought be be dead during an emergency take off from a storm, Mark Watney has to ration food, grow crops, make water, and overall must problem solve in every way to get back to Earth before he runs out of food. During all this, NASA is trying its hardest to get a supplies probe up to Mars as quick as possible to give Watney till the next Ares mission to survive.
The final assigned film “The Martian”, was a thrilling Hollywood movie in which fellow astronauts leave astronaut Mark Watney stranded on Mars after a terrible storm leaves them no choice but to flee the planet in a rush. While they believed that Watney was dead, he was actually fighting to figure out how to survive alone on the Martian planet. Many of the events in this movie, I believe have factual potential. However, there were a few events that occurred and made me question whether or not they were invented for Hollywood effect. Although I have read that the script was sent to NASA to be revised before production on “The Martian” film even began, I wonder how much creative license the producers were allowed. In this paper I will evaluate the factual and scientific events in this movie alongside the nonfiction events.
