In return, all James did was slander Benjamin’s name throughout the community so he wouldn’t be able to find work anywhere else. This was a big challenge for Benjamin because not only did he have a bad name that lasted quite a long time but he also had to force himself to move to distant places like New York and Pennsylvania. He had to travel under dangerous conditions across seas to find another job. Also another challenge Benjamin faced after leaving his fathers job, was that he couldn’t find a long stable and suitable job for himself. He always faced problems at every new job he joined. On his way to New York, Benjamin meets Bradford, who was not able to offer him any jobs. But he refers Benjamin to his son Andrew who was a printer in Pennsylvania. When Benjamin gets to Pennsylvania, Andrew did not have a job to offer him. Then Andrew refers him to go work for Keimer, who is also another printer. Although Keimer gave Benjamin work, but it doesn’t last long. He later stops living with Keimer and ends up leaving the job. From these events in his life we are able to see the cycle and pattern, and he might face similar challenges in the future. At the age of twelve, he began working as an apprentice in a printing shop his brother, James, owned. When he turned 17, Benjamin left to Philadelphia, which he escaped his apprenticeship, which was against the law. A few months after he left for London, England, where he learned more about printing. Then at the age of 20, he moved back to Philadelphia to continue his career in printing. He became the publisher of the Philadelphia Gazette.
Franklin commenced his journal by referring it to one person, his son. With the information he has collected, Benjamin retraces the family tree and he claims to be the tenth son of his father’s, Josiah, seventeen children. At an early age, Benjamin was placed in grammar school instead of being an apprentice in trades like his brothers because his father intended to devote him to church. The reason why this is virtually important was the fact that Benjamin has found his interests in books and reading, hence he was employed in professions such as printing, journalism, librarian, editor, author, and philosophy as his life progresses. Anyways,
On October 4, 1748 Benjamin was elected to the town council of Philadelphia, that following year appointed justice of the peace. On May 1751 he was elected to the Pennsylvania assembly, he was a clerk in the assembly so he was very familiar with how it worked; this helped him gain a lot of power and influence. Certainly Benjamin Franklin understood that these injustices occurred, but accounts of his involvement do not focus on his perception of individual circumstances. Instead, Benjamin Franklin is portrayed as a “bigger picture” idealist who is looking out for the fledgling Colonies in a broader sense. This is not to say that he never witnessed injustice and certainly he was a focal point for those complaints that originated from those Colonies that he represented, but the focus of the novel “My Brother Sam is Dead” was a microscopic viewpoint of a much larger struggle. It would also be negligent to think that Benjamin Franklin was without fault in either his personal or professional life. In fact, there are some accounts that he was very popular with the ladies and fathered a child with an unknown woman before he was married, but as this does not paint a rosy picture of one of our founding fathers, these facts are rarely discussed. Instead, students are introduced to Franklin as an infallible role model by many of his famous quotes, often embraced by institutions of learning, such as “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” , “An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.” and “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I
