On Tuesday February 08, 2016 my whole life felt like it was turned upside down. I was at work when I was confronted by coworkers, classmates, and family members that my photo was taken from my Facebook page. A meme was created by a cyberbully, who thought it was funny and cute to call me fat and trying to defame my character on social media. This meme was viewed and shared by thousands of people all course social media outlets. I had hundreds of people to reach out to me via Facebook, Instagram, and even personal phone calls from relatives expressing their love for me and sending encouraging words. However, this experience caused me to feel angry, depressed, and to have low self esteem by myself. Even though, I did not know this person personally, who was behind the attack. It affected me tremendously and left me with a scare forever, Im constantly thinking people are judging me because of my

School bullying is a problem that has been happening for years across the United States. It leads from physical, to verbal, making posts on social media, spreading rumors and many more. The sickening feeling builds when you are in the presence of a certain person. It could start with a snide remark, a glare, or even a tweet. Imagine you are sitting at the computer with all your friends online then out of nowhere they start bullying you. that's called cyberbullying and thousands if not millions of kids and teenagers get cyber bullied everyday and it makes them feel horrible. Even when out with friends instead of being at home on a cell phone or IPad, there is still an excessive amount of time spent on phones instead with the other individual. How often are there couples out to eat and they are both scrolling through their phones instead of talking? How often are there groups of friends hanging out together and half of them are on their phones? This practice of using the phone in public and ignoring other individuals is now known as “phubbing,” or phone snubbing (Beck.) Phubbing is becoming more and more acceptable because it is becoming so common to see.
With the use of technology becoming increasingly, students who use it to bully others ends up taking it to a whole another level by bullying outside of the school. Cyberbullying is defined as the use of technology such as e-mail, cell phones, and the internet by an individual or group of students who uses very bad behavior to harm another student (Bauman, 2008). Through cyberbullying, students will use verbal abuse to harass their peers and it is more common today than it was a couple of years ago. Since cyberbullying happens mostly outside of the school, students that are being bullied can still report the incident to a teacher, school counselor, parent, and the principal’s office. Since the use of cyberbullying is increasing, it seems that no one is doing enough to keep this from happening. For instance, students that are being cyberbullied are still feeling neglected due to the lack amount of help that they are receiving. Also, suicide rates for bullied students continue to keep going up as well.

Bullying is nothing new in society. Some may think that the issue is just a part of growing up and that “kids will just be kids”. While traditional bullying is a hard concept to grasp, social networking is even worse. Social networking has made bullying become out of control. Children and teens have taken the internet in and embraced it for socializing and communicating. Before advanced technology, children and teens always dealt with school bullies. These bullies would act out in school hallways or on the bus. Today, victims are targeted by bullies over the internet, whether its over social media or instant messaging. Most people undergo some form of bullying throughout their childhood. Growing up, I didn’t experience any physical bullies, but I experienced name-calling and mean comments that were shared via the internet. This concept is known as cyberbullying. Cyberbullying manifests itself by sending harassing and threatening messages to another individual through the internet. It impacts a lot of people and can lead to many long-term or even life-long affects. This issue is hard to grasp because there are so many wide varieties of communication on the internet. Cyberbullying is an issue that will not stop if nothing is being done to prevent it. In this paper, I will talk about why people cyberbully, the affects it has on individuals, and how it can be prevented.
