Office Depot. Office Depot is known as the second best in the office supplies industry right behind Staples and they also began in 1986 (Hurtibise, 2015). Their first store was in Lauderdale, Florida and there after continued to expand through the southern state. Also, just like Staples they started out by selling the bare office essentials and later as well move further in expanding their product line to draw the attention to gain new customers. In 1996, Staples attempted to purchase Office Depot, but the opportunity was turned down by the FTC and in 2015 both companies attempted to merge; but sadly that was also denied by the FTC stating that both combined as one would be too influential (Hurtibise, 2015). Home Depot’s corporate-level strategy is one of internal growth. This conclusion was reached based on the increased focus that Home Depot has placed on growing its existing online and traditional retail operations. Between 2016 and 2018, Home Depot is expected to invest approximately four billion dollars into improvements in its online and physical retail locations in order to make both work more synergistically and grow sales (Petro, 2016). Home Depot hopes that these investments will continue to increase sales at both its physical and digital retail locations, thereby growing the company without adding significant numbers of physical locations.
In "The Store" by Edward P. Jones, the narrator seems to be an irresponsible, immature, and lazy at first. At the beginning, not even once he bothered thinking about the future. All he cared for was the cigarettes and the beers. He called them "valuables". Since he was living with his mom, he did not have to worry about the shelter and the food. Therefore, he did not bother to look for the new job. His mom did not seem to care about him fooling around jobless as well. Because of that, he did not care when his brother told him to look for a new job. Altogether, he was a waste at the beginning. However, Mr. Jones gave the strong clue about his future success by showing his strong work ethic when he said "Never late, never talked back and always volunteering" (142). With that in mind, there were some incidents as the story progressed, positive and negative that helped him to realize about his future.

When it comes to the impact of the Five Forces of Competition and its effect on the performance of Staples and Office Depot, there does not appear to be a strong threat of new entrants in the big-box retail office supply segment of the industry. It seems unlikely that anyone will want to open a new office supply store. While there is a level of service differentiation between the two companies, there is little product differentiation between the two. Likewise, there would be little product differentiation from a new competitor. The threat of substitutes comes into play between Staples and Office Depot in that both companies offer basically the same products. If the customer can’t get what he wants at one store, he can go to the other. Likewise, if the customer becomes disenfranchised with one company for whatever reason, he can easily go to the other company. There doesn’t seem to be much bargaining power of customers or suppliers. There does seems to be a strong industry rivalry which, as with most industries, is the major determinant of the competitiveness of the industry.
