Through the first four games of the season, the West Virginia University football team posted a 3-1 record but an early bye week came just at the opportune time for the Mountaineers. Coming off a sloppy win over Kansas, the break proved beneficial in more ways than one for WVU. "I always think bye weeks are good," sophomore defensive end Reese Donahue said. "It gives you time to heal up and set up your opponent. Sometimes it's even good because the coaches gave us a couple days off. It's good to get a break and get away a little bit. You come back in fresh. Obviously, I love to play a game every Saturday but it's always good to have a bye week." During those days off, several banged up Mountaineers had a chance to heal. "We're getting prepared for TCU." The additional week of preparation was constructive towards getting ready to head to Fort Worth on Saturday, especially for the Mountaineers' defense. Gibson's dawgs surrendered 564 total yards of offense to lowly Kansas. WVU's defense relinquished 367 yards on the ground.
Things aren't going to get any easier against the Horned Frogs (4-0). TCU's rushing offense is 25th best in the country, averaging 5.19 yards per carry. Don't forget the threat the Horned Frogs pose in the air.
The Mountaineers don't have a lot of room for error on Saturday. Therefore, the defense used the extra week to improve their fundamentals.
"Just to get better at our tackling, our scheme and just to get better at what we do on defense," redshirt junior Dravon Askew-Henry said.
Working on the basics was also stressed on the offensive side of the ball.

WVU has averaged 39.0 points per contest. The offense has rushed for a total of 1,618 yard and passed for 3,521 yards. Red-zone offense has improved significantly over last year.

Tonight’s game marked the 62nd of the season for WVU, the most in a single season in program history. It was a season to be proud of for the Mountaineers.

The Horned Frogs (28-19, 9-10) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Coby Boulware singled up the middle before stealing two bases. He scored on a groundout off the bat of Michael Landestoy.

Since Washington’s arrival in 2012, the Aggies has never finished outside of the top 30 in total defense nationally. Even better, under Washington the Aggies defense has been no. 1 in the conference twice, has had the no.1 run defense four times and on two separate occasions the Aggies ended the season being the No.1 scoring defense . So for Washington, this Spring Game served as an opportunity to instill his mark on the team collectively, and to focus on player development.
After a horrendous start from sophomore BJ Myers, right-hander Grove came on in relief and went the distance for WVU. The freshman tossed 8.1 scoreless innings. He struck out 13 and gave up four hits.
We have now gone through 3 games and a scrimmage, with another game tonight. Now, You can make all the excuses in the world for why we lost the first two. “They’re like number one in the state”, “That was a bad team for first week”, “We didn’t have all our guys”, the list could go on and on. But one thing is for sure, and that’s that there is no excuse for the way we played those first two weeks. There’s no excuse for missing blocks, running by tackles, and taking plays off! Not a single excuse you give will make that ok! You can’t do those things and expect to win games.
