With social media at the people’s disposal, users are able to share their thoughts and to keep up to date with current events. Its no surprise to find issues trending on social media every now and then; this year’s election was no exception. Politics are without a doubt a greatly debated topic. Millions of post and articles taking sides flew all across social media; some were true while others were not. A supposed satire letter written by author C.S. Lewis became popular throughout social media during the campaigns. Letter is as followed:
My dear Wormwood,
Be sure that the patient remains completely fixated on politics. Arguments, political gossip, and obsessing on the faults of people they have never met serves as an excellent distraction from advancing in personal virtue, character, and the things the patient can control. Make sure to keep the patient in a constant state of angst, frustration and general disdain towards the rest of the human race in order to avoid any kind of charity or inner peace from further developing. Ensure that the patient continues to

Lewis. This paper will analyze the argument of the passage above by parsing it, examining formal and informal proof, while also discussing its fallacies.
Transitional paragraph.
In order to parse the passage we will use Stephen Toulmin’s structural model of argument. Consisting of a diagram, Toulmin’s model allows the argument to be broken down into six elements.
Evidence - Facts and data that can be used to support the claim.
Warrant - Reasoning that connects the evidence to claim. Helps show the relevance of the evidence.
Claim - Conclusion being established.
Support for the Warrant - Provides strength for the warrant.
Reservation - Condition in which the claim can be negated. Provides a possibility that the claim may be
The tone of The Screwtape Letters is one of the most intriguing aspects of it’s style. The story is written from Screwtape’s point of view, so the tone showcases Screwtape’s personality. It is deceptively charming. Screwtape’s narration sounds like a cynical professor or an intelligent mentor (Johnson). Lewis laces the story with dark humor and sarcasm. This can be seen The tone is a unique blend of imagination and theology (Lewis 175). In addition to the tone, Lewis uses figurative language to help tell the story. He uses lots of similes and metaphors to explain his theological points. He uses metaphors as imaginative forms (Root). An example of this is when Screwtape talks about a “taster or connoisseur or churches” when talking about
Evaluate the warrants (explanation of evidence) in each paragraph. Is there a balance between the evidence and warrants? Is the connection between the evidence and claim/reasons clear? Make note of any imbalance or areas of confusion.
Could anyone feel sympathy for a groveling, sly demon? The demons did have a hard job, but it was a despicable job of choice. In The Screwtape Letters, by C.S. Lewis, Screwtape busily instructs his nephew, Wormwood, who scrambles to trip up his “patient,” and bring the man to hell. Throughout the book, everyone should plainly realize that neither Screwtape nor Wormwood deserved pity or sympathy in the least. The first reason for this is that the demons’ malevolence revealed itself plainly in the book. Secondly the demons’ hate for all that is good and innocent reared its ugly head, snarling in the reader’s face. Finally, the pitiable, vile, cruel plans of the demons wiped out any lingering sympathetic feelings in the reader. The demons were purely cruelty.
According to the chapter “Understanding Argument” from the anthology titled Elements of Argument, the warrant is “an assumption, belief, or principle that is taken for granted, and it also guarantees the credibility of the relationship between the claim and support” (Understanding Argument 11). In the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson’s warrant is shown in the

In The Screwtape Letters, CS Lewis utilizes his character Screwtape to depict and essentially recommend three specific categories of temptation that humans typically fall into, which are the World, the Flesh, and the Spirit. In that order, the three categories overlap, meaning in the World is the flesh and in the Flesh is the Spirit. The Bible, my strongest point of reference, bares insight into what the temptations of the World are and why God considers them to be fatally corrupt. 1 John 2:15-17 reads “don’t love the worlds ways. Don’t love the worlds goods. Love of the world squeezes out love for the Father. Practically everything that goes on in the world- wanting your own way, wanting everything for yourself, wanting to appear important- has nothing to do with the Father. It just
As a way to discuss his beliefs and thoughts on his faith, government system, society in that time and mankind in general, C.S. Lewis created The Screwtape Letters, a book in the form of letters from senior demon Screwtape to his nephew Wormwood, a sort of demonic trainee. For all purposes, they are lectures, but lectures jazzed up and made more suitable for a students mind. After reading the book, I was really enlightened and reminded of the truths that we humans should believe about God.
When I think of ways the Devil tries to destroy my relationship with the Lord, my thoughts usually retreat to the seemingly larger hardships we may face: loss, rejection, addiction, and so on. Things like mild annoyances and small disagreements fail to come to mind. In the first four letters of Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters, Screwtape tells his nephew to use small hindrances to distract the character known as the ‘patient’. His goal is to lead this newly reformed Christian astray. Screwtape goes on to tell Wormwood, ‘- hundreds of these adult converts have been reclaimed after a brief sojourn in the Enemy’s camp and are now with us.” This quote serves as a reminder that Christians are not safe from temptations and hardships once they become
C.S. Lewis is one of the greatest authors in history. His books are still widely available and sold to many interested readers. In Lewis’ childhood, he experienced a tragedy that affected his belief in god; in his middle life, he mainly focused on college and his studies, but his father’s death played a role in Lewis later becoming a Christian. In Lewis’ later life, he married one of his own fans. Clive’s passion for writing began when he was a small child, and it continued to grow as he furthered his education to become a college professor at Oxford University. Lewis is still remembered today for his great works, such as The Screwtape Letters and The Chronicles of Narnia, which is a popular series among children.
My book was Screwtape Letters by CS Lewis. This book was peculiar because of its perspective on the world of demons. Starting to read the book showed me how mysterious but how organized CS Lewis makes this realm be. This book was first published in the February 1942. The book is set in the World War 2 era. The two main demons in the book are; senior demon Screwtape and Mr. Wormwood. The book is letters from Screwtape to Mr. Wormwood. The book refers to the father as Satan and the enemy as God. The conflict in this story is the demons are trying to tempt or destroy the patient’s (human being who is a British Christian) relationship (knowledge of God.) I believe he wrote it to relate and give a perspective on demons. I think he was trying to
The Toulmin Model’s primary purpose is to learn and analyze how people argue every day. Toulmin created this “theory of argumentation” because he wanted to help people to argue in a better way. I thought the article was very informative and easy to navigate. I found the flow of Toulmin’s argument very similar to the Ladder of Abstraction. Toulmin uses data and facts in order to back up claims and further enhance the meaning of an argument. Much like Toulmin, the Ladder of Abstraction selects data in order to add meaning to the actions that you will eventually develop. Another thing I really liked about the article was how the article explains each of the segments of the article and how they relate to each other. The article addresses warrants
This is a warrant because it supports the claim but isn’t proved to be true, however it persuades the readers to reason with the writer’s intended purpose.
the State’s evidence on all elements of the offense charged. . .,” and (2) that evidence of
The claim is the position or claim, which is argued for the deduction of the argument. For example a claim would be cars over 20 years old shouldn’t be allowed on the road. The data are the foundation or basis for the claim, the support. An example of data would be older vehicles pollute the environment and are less safe than newer car models. The warrant is also mentioned as the bridge, it is a description of why or how the data supports the claim, the underlying assumptions that links the data to the claim. An example of warrant would be removing the older car models from the road, and would drastically improve the
In the writing by Briggs (Young People and Political Participation: Teen Players) she notes that “social media are a critical new space for political discourse and engagement, which political institutions cannot afford to neglect” as the younger audiences use social media, and the people they follow as a guide it seemed vital that modern day politics has to infiltrate social media formats. This can be utilised by politicians and their agenda to widen the scope of their message. In the Praeger Handbook of Political Campaigning in the United States, Benoit investigates how successful an organised strategy using new media to win an election can be for political candidates. He states that “the innovative use of new media contributed to President Barack Obama's presidential campaign win in 2008” (Benoit, 2016). Obama's presidential campaign was one of the first to set the standard for political strategy online. The literature talks about the expansion of the internet and how that has provided a suitable platform for political agendas to grow exponentially. With the focus of the research project highlighting the specific use of social media it is important to reflect on the initial stages of online political campaigning, and to understand how Trump has cultivated this style of political
