Stephen Toulmin, one of the most significant philosophers of our generation. Mr. Toulmin produced widespread analyses from morals, science, and ethical reasoning and established a different method for examining arguments, which is recognized as the Toulmin model of argumentation. Stephen Toulmin model of argumentation was not realized in Great Britain, but when he got to America those same ideas manifested to become the Toulmin model we know today. In the earlier stages of The Toulmin model it was used in debate manuals. The Toulmin model analyzes the strength and weaknesses of any argumentation. The Toulmin model has advanced into the rhetorical interpretation of literary texts. This tool is used for developing, examining, and classifying arguments. There are six parts of the model of argument from the claim, data, warrant, backing, modality, and rebuttal. The claim is the position or claim, which is argued for the deduction of the argument. For example a claim would be cars over 20 years old shouldn’t be allowed on the road. The data are the foundation or basis for the claim, the support. An example of data would be older vehicles pollute the environment and are less safe than newer car models. The warrant is also mentioned as the bridge, it is a description of why or how the data supports the claim, the underlying assumptions that links the data to the claim. An example of warrant would be removing the older car models from the road, and would drastically improve the
Stephen Toulmin uses his own type of system to help readers analyze arguments. Enthymeme is given as a claim, therefore a warrant is needed in Toulmin’s schema. Following these concepts is backing and grounds. While backing is used to back up one’s sources and arguments to help and support the warrant. Conditions of rebuttal means that the audience should look at the argument as a doubter. The last stage in Toulmin’s schema is to use a qualifier. The argument needs to be ready for a qualifiers to help it a bit more if the facts used to back up isn’t very good to use. Using Toulmin’s schema on the story Dream On by Mark Krikorian will help the audience decide whether the convincing facts can help illegal immigrants. Krikorian uses Toulmin’s schema real well while stating his facts in his written article. Krikorian is an author who writes about just another type of amnesty for illegal immigrants wanting to become legal citizens of the United States of America. Soon to find out that the DREAM Act will fail because it is not sufficient enough to help children under the age of 16 to become legal.
The Toulmin method is an effective way to carefully analyze a text within a written argument. When writing the Toulmin method, the readers can show how effectively or ineffectively the author’s argument is. The article, “Raise Wages, Not Walls,” Michael S. Dukakis and Daniel J. B. Mitchell argue that raising the minimum wages will help solve the immigration issue rather than building walls. The essay has a claim, but has weak supporting evidences and reasons that does not support the claim.
Warrant - Reasoning that connects the evidence to claim. Helps show the relevance of the evidence.
In this article titled “Analyzing Arguments: Those You Read and Those You Write” goes over multiple strategies and examples to help you analyze the meaning and purpose of a specific argument and how to strengthen your own.
In arguing that anti-Confederate southerners played a central role in Confederate defeat, Freehling shifts historical debate to ground that is at once familiar and novel. Historians such as Drew Gilpin Faust and Paul Escott have identified internal disaffection as the primary cause of Confederate defeat while Gary Gallagher has suggested that whites in the Confederacy maintained their support for the government even as military losses ended the war.[1] The South vs. the South expands the scope of inquiry, looking beyond internal fissures within the Confederacy to the divisions in broader southern society. In Freehling's telling, anti-Confederate whites undermined the Confederacy by remaining outside the nation while slaves sapped Confederate
The Toulmin argument is more of an aggressive approach of proving a statement wrong and the Rogerian argument is a passive approach that will state the facts and allow the both sides to be heard. I usually agree with the Rogerian approach, but in this case I would have to use the Toulmin method to argue against this statement. This idea and argument needs to be refuted and proved wrong. This argument is continually hurting young people and causing them to believe that this is an achievable standard that must be attained. I would argue the point that it is unhealthy, unnatural, and physically unachievable. I would use the Toulmin approach to refute any claim that was made with evidence and insure that my argument proved the statement incorrect.
Mr Campbell Newman was a popular lord mayor as a member of the Liberal Party, who served the Queensland government for three years from 2012 – 2015 (Lewis, 2015). In the recent 2015 Queensland state election, Newman was heavily punished by the public voters of Queensland as a result of treating the public servants unfairly by cutting jobs in contrast to his promises. He also claimed that there would be no forced redundancies and that he would try to lower the unemployment rate, yet these promises were never met. In support of this, the following essay argues that Campbell Newman didn’t interfere with the free market economy of Queensland, which can be beneficial for consumers in many ways because there is no government intervention. Instead,

Two Latinas and a baby were stopped by security while grocery shopping, because another shopper accused the dark-skinned women of kidnapping the fair-skinned, blue-eyed, blonde baby accompanying them. It was not until the fair-skinned, blue-eyed, blonde father of the baby refuted the accusation, that the women were released. My mother (who is from El Salvador) and my nanny (who is from Belize) were the two women and I was the baby. My mom and nanny would not have been publicly incriminated and shamed, were they fair-skinned. McIntosh’s article substantiates the ubiquity of white privilege. White people do not have to worry about being monitored while running errands or being pulled over because of their skin color. I agree with McIntosh’s point
EJI argued in the United States Supreme Court that death-in-prison sentences imposed on children are unconstitutional, and the Court has now banned death-in-prison sentences for children convicted of non-homicide crimes and mandatory death-in-prison sentences for all children. Trial courts must conduct new sentencing hearings where judges will have to consider children's individual characters and life circumstances, including age, as well as the circumstances of the crime. The Supreme Court wrote that, because of "children's diminished culpability, and heightened capacity for change, we think appropriate occasions for sentencing juveniles to this harshest possible penalty will be

On July 27, 2004, Barack Obama delivered a keynote address at the Democratic National Convention that catapulted him onto the national stage and decidedly set in motion the rest of his political career. In it, Obama addresses controversial topics while simultaneously maintaining an underlying theme of collaboration and common experiences. His arguments can be comprehensively analyzed following the Toulmin model of argumentation. This model consists primarily of a claim, which is the assertion the rhetor attempts to prove, supporting evidence for the claim, and a warrant connecting the evidence to the claim. Secondary elements of this model include backing supporting the warrant, the
Within the pro-choice world there are many issues that are discussed like abortion, the instant where life begins and the use of contraceptives. This article will focus on not only the issue of using of contraceptives, but specifically the distribution of oral contraceptives (“the pill”) to teenage girls without their parent’s consent.
Waite and Gallagher also discuss the benefits that marriage gives to couples. Including the financial benefits, in that through specialization and by sharing incomes getting married boosts standard of living by thirty percent and this benefit is not incurred by cohabitating, as those who cohabitate do not share as much and are less committed to the wellbeing of their partner. In addition to the financial benefits, they also discuss the emotional benefits of knowing you have someone who loves you and who would take care of you. Children similarly benefit from having married parents as there are more financial resources available to help take care of them and they get to spend more time with at least one parent.
