Learning how to get back up after you have been shattered or have been disoriented is something important to the many ambitious tasks that require people to persevere. In The Call of the Wild, Buck loses someone or something that he truly loves, and is forced to find another way of living with a new pack in an unfamiliar environment with contemporary ways. In contrast, many adults get laid off from their jobs and have to find a new job at a new place with new people. My mother had to persevere when she got laid off from her job. While my mother and Buck are different in many different ways, they both had been broken or lost something. They had to both get back up and find something new that they both relished. In schools and counties all over, the book The Call of the Wild is being banned from 8th grade curriculum. For reasons such as that the book is based on true events, that the book describes actions of animal abuse that still occur today, and that banning books causes illiteracy and it caused by illiteracy, I do not believe that The Call of the Wild should be taken out of 8th grade curriculum.

He began again to daze off staring at the fire and imagining the hairy man crouched down in the summer sun. The Call of the Wild written by Jack London is an adventure book that follows the life of a once tamed dog known as Buck to a dog that has retrogressed to a more primitive state during the Yukon Gold Rush. In the book, “Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer. Chapter 10 tells us the body of Chris McCandless was found and for a week they still had not been able to identify the body. On September 10th, the story of a dead hiker was published in the Anchorage Daily News. Jim Gallien saw the article and called the State Troopers and said, “Hey, I think I gave that guy a ride.”(99) At first the trooper did not believe Jim, because there have been already a number of people who said they knew the hikers identity. Jim kept talking to the trooper and described a few items that was not mentioned in the newspaper. Ultimately, what convinced the trooper about Jim’s claim was an entry in Chris’s journal that said, “Exit Fairbanks. Sitting Gallien. Rabbit Day” (99).
Jack London brings a natural instinct into the spotlight by defining that everyone has that primal call to the wild, and often one feels this when in a difficult situation. Giving into this ‘call of the wild’ leads to a different kind of adaptation, it makes you become primal to survive in a primal situation. Further into the book it states, “The others sat down and howled. And now the call came to Buck in unmistakable accents. He, too, sad down and howled.” (London, 1990, p.62). This is the defining moment of Jack’s book when Buck lets go of all ties to humans and decides to carve his own path, adapting the way he needs to, not the way that humans encouraged him. Soon, Buck changes himself completely to fit snugly into the environment and to prevent further torturous struggles with humans. These quotes combine to paint a picture of total and complete change when it comes to a new and unfavorable environment.
This is when Perrault and Francois discover that the camp is alive with several dozen starving huskies which in turn, breaks up Spitz and Buck’s fight. The team-dogs were driven into a corner by the first rush and each dog was fighting for their life even though they were against odds. Spitz tried to kill Buck by attack him as well but Perrault and Francois stepped in and distracted the wolves long enough for Buck to throw him off. Soon a break appeared and the team-dogs ran for their lives and eventually escaped.
Is it worth to give up your lifestyle and force yourself to live a different one? Some people are willing to quit their own lifestyles to live a whole new different life. In the story “Into the Wild” Chris McCandless was running from his family because of all the drama that he had to face growing up. He even left Washington D.C to move to Alaska, he did this because he was very fond of nature. In the book “Into the Wild” the Author Jon Krakauer explains how Chris McCandless was able to sacrifice his life in order to live a life in the wilderness. A lot of people wouldn’t want to do this because people wouldn’t to want to be willing to give up their own lifestyle in order to start a new one from scratch. It’s not worth it to lose your own lifestyle because it could also result into you losing your life as well.
