The book “Call of the Wild” is told to be “a modern classic”. Some say that “Call of the Wild” should be banned in most school and libraries, including MMS. I believe that “Call of the Wild” should not be banned from schools because it shows how you should act your inner self, it shows leadership, and overcoming adversity through the dog Buck and connect to everyday lives. These traits are shown throughout the book and can intertwine with the lives of teens. “Call of the Wild” should not be banned because it shows leadership throughout the book. It first shows this through Buck gaining the place as the lead dog, “Buck kills spitz to take his place as the lead dog”. Most would understand this is a form of leadership, but not as killing. This connects by showing to out work others, you will succeed. In life, you aren't always given what you want, like how Buck didn't want to get sold. Buck shows another sign of the trait leadership, through attacking those who killed his …show more content…
Buck’s owner had died and he visited the sight of his death before living on as a wolf, “but every year he returns to the place Thornton died, to mourn his master before returning to his life in the wild”. Everyone has lost someone in their lives. It’s just a part of life, just how Buck treats it like a real human being, but then goes back to his life as a wolf. Buck also overcomes the adversity of the abusive owners. Buck tries to fight the owners off but gets suffocated,”Then the rope tightened mercilessly, while Buck struggled in a fury, his tongue lolling out of his mouth”. Buck is overcoming the harsh and abusive conditions of these owners. We go through times in our lives that are tough like Buck. Some say that the abusive manner towards the dogs is too much. But, it shows how much Buck has changed through the book, how he has become stronger, and how we treat dogs
First, Buck has to fight off one hundred huskies. For example, Buck tries to escape the camp with Spitz. Since, he doesn’t want to be killed by the starving dogs. Second, Buck and the other dogs know Dave has been put down. For instance, the dogs know he has been killed and they are scared. Since, they are all sad, but they are glad it was not them being put down. Last, Buck and the team eat too much and might not be able to stand the cold weather. For example, the dogs could die in the cold. Since, the food makes them full and unable to get up and move around. In conclusion, Buck furthers his knowledge of kill or be killed.
One of the main reasons I’m sure you want to ban this book is because of the profanity used in it. Yes, there is a lot of foul language use in this book, but when you think about it kids are used to hearing people cuss, and reading it is a lot less worse than hearing them or saying them in my opinion. The cuss words add a lot of character to the book to be honest, it sets the mood a lot of times. It would not be fair for someones who is older and more mature to not be able to read it because some little kid can’t be serious about it.
The Call of the Wild, on the surface, is a story about Buck, a four- year old dog that is part Shepherd and part St. Bernard. More importantly, it is a naturalistic tale about the survival of the fittest in nature. Throughout the novel, Buck proves that he is fit and can endure the law of the club, the law of the fang, and the laws of nature.
After John Thornton dies and Buck’s only tie to humanity and civilization is severed, Buck proceeds to live out his days in a local wolf pack where he becomes the alpha. Here he becomes a legend to the locals and is forevermore known as the Ghost Dog because of ferocious actions presiding Thornton’s death. Throughout the novel, “The Call of the Wild” it is proven that adaptability is key to one’s survival in any harsh environment. Over the many years in Buck’s time after being kidnapped by Manuel, Buck demonstrated time and time again that being able to adapt to one’s surroundings is and essential to life. In the novel, it is conveyed through many different events and lessons that being able to become accustomed to a setting is key to
The book that I have selected is “The Call of the Wild” by Jack London, written in 1903. It is his most widely read, enjoyed, and not enjoyed book. It is banned for many reasons such as animal cruelty and just plain violence. Buck was kidnapped from his home to become a part of a dog sled team involved with the Klondike Gold rush. I agree and disagree and with the book being banned. I have a strong belief that it should be up to the parents for what their child/children can and cannot read. They parents should have their own say not having to listen to the restrictions.
Banning a book is when a person or group takes away a book from the public or a majority group (Wilson, 844). Books taken from the public are mostly banned for its materials or controversial topics, however, a handful of novels were able to avoid being taken off shelves. A novel that was able to avoid this is Slaughterhouse-Five, the book is banned in schools around the United States and the reason for this is sexual situations, violent content, and strong language within the story, but a majority of schools currently allow it (Paulson, 07A). However, this novel shouldn’t be banned because people have freedom to read, content shouldn’t be filtered or controlled and any topic should be free to the public.
Buck answered the call of the wild after Thornton’s death. He ran and howled with the wolves. The Indians called him a ghost dog because he was a powerful wolf who came to the place where Thornton died every year. This was because Buck felt the passionate love for him and Thornton. Buck saved Thornton, risking his life. “Love. Genuine, passionate love, was his first time.” (pg 73). What the influence of love Thornton had for Buck was unbreakable. Thornton’s influence allowed Buck to grow more
Manuel kidnaps Buck and sells him to pay off a debt. Buck’s trustworthy nature changes as soon as he is beaten and is not fed or allowed to drink water. When Buck arrives in Seattle he is almost beaten to death by the man in the red sweater. "He saw, once for all, that he stood no chance against a man with a club." (Call of the Wild, page 19). Buck learns from this horrible incident the ‘law of the club.’ The law of the club states that a dog is no match for a man with a weapon. Buck witnesses as his newly-made friend named Curly is torn to pieces by thirty or forty huskies after she falls to the ground from fighting. Buck is taught the ‘law of the fang’ from Curly’s death scene. The law of the fang recognizes the fact that once a dog falls to the ground he is dead. In the north, Buck learns many traits that will help him journey through the north in order to survive. Buck learns that he has to eat his food quickly in order to not have it stolen; he learns to steal food to survive, because the daily ration cannot fill his stomach; he learns to break the ice out from his toes; and finally Buck learns that in order to stay warm during the harsh, freezing nights, he has to make a ‘nest’ to sleep in. Because Buck learns these new secrets of the sled dogs, he is able to survive in the north and to maintain his
I picked this quote from chapter 6 and it explains the tension building up inside of Buck during his time with John Thornton, who is the ideal master, and his relationship with Buck represents a perfect friendship between a dog and their owner. The author tells us that this is the first time that Buck has loved a human. Yet it is clear that Buck is supposed to free in the wild, so Buck doesn’t know whether to stay with his owner or go free into the wild. But after Thornton is killed and he avenges his death he has no more reasons to not go into the wild where he truly belongs.
The Call Of The Wild starts off with our protagonist Buck being kidnapped, by Manuel, at his home in San Diego. Manuel takes Buck to The Man in The Red Sweater who teaches him the Law of Club and Fang. Buck soon gets to know all of his pack and the leader Spitz soon becomes his rival. Soon the two dogs fight, and Buck kills Spitz becoming the leader of his pack. After this Perrault and Francois sell the pack of dogs to a
Ever heard of a dog gone wild in the wilderness? Well Buck is one. In the book The Call of the Wild by Jack London, Buck was peacefully living on an estate in Santa Clara Valley, California, until he was kidnapped and trained and sold through several people. Then he made it to the Northland with some other dogs and joined a sled dog team. Buck was slowly retrogressing. He eventually killed the leader of the team but then he was sold again and delivered mail, then he was sold AGAIN to some stupid Americans that died along the way while trying to find gold. Finally a man named John Thornton saved Buck from death and they became best friends and there was true love between them. He killed many animals along the way. John had died from a rain of arrows and now that John was dead…...there was nothing holding him back to the call of the wild. Several times in the book Survival of the Fittest is a common theme that happens.
The struggle for survival is a major point throughout Buck’s journey. From the very beginning Buck learns to lose his morals to survive. He learns to steal food without getting caught and how to kill other dogs. He learns to appease the dogs drivers as well as other dogs by following “The Law of Club and Fang”. He learns how to endure the brutal environment. However Buck doesn't just want to just survive the Northland, he wants to conquer it.
Buck at first didn't know how to handle it, and kind of just went with the flow. This is how my mother reacted in the beginning. Then, Buck remembered that he was not alone, and tried to become more social with the rest of the pack. My mom talked to people about it, and this made her feel exceptional. They also both used various different strategies to overcome the situation. In the end, when with John Thornton, Buck is trying to decide whether he wants to go with John Thornton, because he loves him, or follow his tribal instincts and be a wild animal rather than a pet. My mother didn’t know if she wanted to try to forget the incident because it was tormenting her, or remember it to learn things from it. In the end they both end up learning from their situations. Buck learns that his true place is in the wild with his pack. My mother learned that life is fragile, and it only takes the slightest moment for it to be changed or
The story has a significant point about how the desire for animals to inhabit in the nature in which they belong in should be expressed. The theme of this story is that things that long for the wild, should be in the wild, or things that want to be civilized, should be civilized. The central conflict of the novel is that Buck wished to fulfil his life in the wild, but he had difficulties getting to that point. The story has a strong and precise beginning, middle, and end, which readers usually appreciate. The novel has a great way of showing the development and change of Buck and the other characters. The story could’ve been improved by changing “man” to “human” when referencing people in general. Women existed at that time, but London only wrote the term “man.” The Call of the Wild is a well put together novel that has a significant theme, and an intriguing
I thought call of the wild was a good book to read. I like chapter 6 the best because that is when john had got buck. I didn’t like that they beat the dogs in the book. I like that buck became the main sled dog. I didn’t like that Spitz got killed.
