Careers in the Clinical Laboratory Science Field By: Rolando Barrios November 20, 2014 Per. 1-6 What is Clinical Laboratory Science? Clinical Laboratory Science, also known as Medical Technology is the occupation in the medical field that provides doctors with information needed to treat a disease. Laboratory Scientists, perform an extended variety of tests, ensure that the test results are reliable, explain the importance of laboratory tests, and study the effectiveness of laboratory tests. Laboratory Scientists perform many tests, some of which include, the analysis enzyme activity released while a heart attack is taking place, the identification of the type of bacteria causing an infection, and the detection of DNA markers that cause genetic diseases. The tests performed by Laboratory Scientists reveal information unknown to people before their test was taken. Laboratory Scientists are one of the most important persons in the hospital. Instead of performing tests, a Laboratory Scientist may be responsible for confirming that the results of a test are accurate. The Laboratory Scientist is an important part of a medical team because his test results often help decide the type of treatment methods doctors’ use for their patients. An inaccurate result could lead to unnecessary upset for a patient or even incorrect treatment. Laboratory Scientists may also check to ensure that products for transfusions are safe. Laboratory Scientists have many careers to choose from.
The history of lab technicians can be dated back to the same time as medicine actually maybe even a little earlier. The ancient Greeks, “saw the value in examining body fluids to determine a disease”(Berger 1). Because they saw this is part of the reason that Lab Technician’s exist today. The beginning of this history can be dated back to “1658 with Jan Swammerdam’s discovery of red blood corpuscles”(Career Research). Coming along with another great accomplishment was, “Robert Koch and Louis Pasteur discovery in bacteriology in the 1870s”(Career Research). These discoveries have helped us overcome boundaries in the twentieth centuries and discover so much more than we already know. “In 1928 Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin in his lab
As a biomedical scientist working in a pathology laboratory, the work that is performed is vital for helping pathologists make a better diagnosis and find the right treatment for the patients. Discussions of patient diagnosis and treatments often take place with multi-disciplinary team meetings (MDT meetings); these consist of a group of professionals from one or more clinical disciplines, who together discuss the case of the patient and make formal decisions regarding the recommended treatment pathway. The specialist doctors, registrars, nurses, consultants, and coordinators who come from a range of other professional groups, will establish from any blood and tissue samples, x-rays and scans that the patient’s diagnosis has been made correctly and accurately. For this reason, the work of a biomedical scientist will indirectly have an impact on these professional groups and the healthcare of the patient. Biomedical scientist are therefore relied upon to produce accurate work in the laboratory pathway, as any tiny mistake may be critical for the outcome of these meetings, if they are not identified. Alongside this, the workflow that the biomedical scientists must maintain in the laboratory will affect these meetings if turn-around times are not met efficiently.
I believe that a stakeholder that we wouldn’t think of as much in the US healthcare system is laboratory technicians. Without them, hospitals would run chaos. Phlebotomist use record keeping and they also pay attention to detail which are extremely important in this field. Phlebotomist will often use computers to input all the necessary data about each patient. Preparing samples for laboratory analysis and storing them appropriately are included in the responsibilities of the phlebotomist. If doctors and nurses don’t get those analysis from the phlebotomist, how are they supposed to act when it comes to the care of the patient, if they don’t have a start point? Patient management, progress and decisions about treatment are based on the results
This paper will explore into a Laboratory Technician based on information collected from one textbook, and six published books. Chernecky (2009) will discuss the type of work done in the career, specifically towards collecting samples and analyzing body fluids, and other substances. McPherson (2007) will provide the information on the working conditions and the job outlooks for the future and the wages and benefits of the career. Van Leeuwen (2009) will explain the three methods and strategies for dealing with stress in this career, explaining strategies and basic techniques. Ramakrishnan (2012) will discuss the educational requirements, and the advancements opportunities. Hopkins (2009) will state the equipment utilized with this career, and
With the passage of Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Act the patient would know that unsafe practices and poor quality within any laboratory will not be tolerated. CLIA rules for laboratory testing are more standardized because it outlines the expectations of laboratories. This passage would allow the patient and/or their personal representative access to his or her laboratory test reports and the results of such test from the laboratory. The patient would know that this amendment requires laboratories to implement policies and procedures relating to a patient request for information. Also, the patient would know that there must be a proper verification of identification before he or she has access to PHI. Any laboratory
A clinical laboratory is defined as any facility where materials derived from the human body are examined for the purpose of providing information for the diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of disease or the assessment of health. Standards applied to
In an effort to accomplish my primary career goal of becoming a medical laboratory technician, I will need to ensure I communicate clearly both in writing and verbally. All aspects of life require communicating and interacting with other people either verbally, nonverbally, or in writing; however, in a professional work setting it is most important. Regardless the field of expertise, poor communication could be imperative to one’s career. For example, in a business setting, lack of communication could result in merchandises not being ordered; in a medical setting, a patient could die. No matter where one goes in life, the ability to successfully communicate with others is tremendously important.
As a diagnostic occupation, the technician will be limited to what procedures are accomplished due to the position of the occupation in the medical laboratory career ladder. This position in the career ladder limits technicians to routine tests, unlike the more complex test done by technologist that requires the preparation of samples and manual testing. And unlike those higher on the career ladder, the technician must be supervised by the lab technologist or manager. (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2016) Additionally, the medical laboratory technician is limited to diagnosing diseases, and is not responsible for treatment provided by physicians. The information discovered by the technician must be given to the health care personal who will provide
To be a medical professional is required very high level of professionalism in every diagnostic testing, as a future medical laboratory professional, I understood what it matters most is not the volume of testing I perform matters but the quality of the testing matters most. At this point know I fully understood the codes of ethics expected from medical laboratory professional from what we covered in
Imagine this scene: your five-year-old child has been sick for a week, and you’ve exhausted your medical dictionary trying to look up their symptoms. You visit your pediatrician, and she decides to send some tests to the lab. Although you are probably too concerned about your child to think about it, the “lab” is not only expensive equipment that magically examines blood or tissue samples. Rather, it is a group of well-trained medical professionals whose job it is to treat you by providing your doctor with the information they need to give you the best treatment possible. The group of medical professionals helping you and your child are called pathologists, and they work behind the scenes, diagnosing diseases and helping doctors to address
As part of the CLS clinical practicum site preparation, I was granted the opportunity to tour Henry Ford Health Systems Laboratory. Being a patient at Henry Ford Health Systems, it was intriguing to see how their laboratory operates behind the scenes. If my physician ever has to order any laboratory tests, it does not take more than two to three business days to receive my results and feedback from my physician. After touring Henry Ford’s laboratory, there was no longer any doubt as to how I could receive my results so quickly; Henry Ford is very driven and modern. Case in point, their main laboratory was in the middle of cleaning up after a major technological upgrade during the tour. I also observed that every employee seemed to be completely
When I was five years old, I was diagnosed with moderate hearing loss in both ears and required hearing aids. Despite the fallbacks that come with being hearing impaired, I was inspired by the various healthcare professionals and the technology used. At six years old, I constructed pretend computers and hearing aids out of paper to run hearing tests on my toys. Since childhood, I have always aspired to work in healthcare. As an adult, I have decided on the Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) program due to my fascination with what can be discovered through the millions of tests that laboratory technologists perform.
The future of Osteopathic Medicine is greatly dependent on leaders who are truly passionate about the field. If given the opportunity to become the Vice President of the SAAO club, I will work together with the President and my fellow colleagues on providing education and a better understating of osteopathic medicine, its techniques and its life long benefits to my fellow classmates and the community. I believe that I will ideally fit the position based on my previous professional experience as a Laboratory Technician in one of the top Biochemistry labs at the University of Rochester. As a Technician, I served as an essential link between the Principal Investigator and the rest of the world on some days. A part of my duties included organization
There are major reasons why the laboratory specialist perform inappropriate behavior. The equipment and procedures provide by the laboratory specialist are not covered in the existing regulatory regime. Currently, the regulation just a requirement that at least one licensed director of a medical laboratory must be a registered medical laboratory technologist (Legislative Council, 2012). It means that the behavior basic on the ethical, value of the laboratory specialist. Therefore, the laboratory specialist may had opportunity to violating the law of
My main goal throughout my life has been graduating from college. After I finished high school, I got accepted into a Dental School in Havana City, Cuba where I successfully completed three years of the career. After moving to the USA, I decided to pursue a degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, and now I am in the process of completing my final semester at Lincoln Land Community College. My aspiration is to be admitted in the Clinical Laboratory Science Program at UIS and obtain a Bachelor in Science degree. I am going to study really hard in order to become an excellent health care professional. I want to find a job in which I can put in practice everything I learned, but also where I can learn a little bit more every day. I would also
