Caroline Kennedy, daughter of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, said of her mother, “I think my mother made it clear you have to live life by your own terms and you have to not worry about what other people think and have the courage to do the unexpected”(Caroline Kennedy quotes, page 1). Jacqueline, known as Jackie, is one of the most well known women of the 1900’s. Showcasing her strong-will and grace from an early age, she inspired many people while serving as First Lady and after. While Jackie Kennedy on the surface seemed to live a charmed life as a prominent, beautiful woman, she endured the death of her son, the tragic death of her husband President John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum as a memorial to her husband. These landmarks are still present today in Boston Harbor. She also focused also on bettering the academics at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. A famous quote from her just a few days after JFK’s assassination is, “One must not let oneself be overwhelmed by such sadness.” (Jackie Kennedy quotes, page 1) As strong as she sounded in that moment, the sadness would soon catch up to her, as it would anyone. She went through a deep depression period where she seldom left her room, cried, and drank. She experienced nightmares and often woke herself up screaming and crying. She practically blamed herself for her husband’s death, and found it terribly hard to look at her husband’s face. Jackie, for the most part, grew irritated by the chorus of public praise for her conduct in the aftermath of the tragedy. Jackie said,“I don’t like to hear people say that I am poised and maintaining a good appearance” (Barbara Leaming, paragraph 10). She wanted to continue her grieving process without all of the media attention on her. On top of it all, she had her kids to worry about. Jackie did everything she could to keep somewhat of a normalcy for her children, so much that she moved away from Washington to New York. Aristotle was of Greek descent and worked as a shipping magnate. She lived part of each year in one of his many homes, either in Paris, Athens, or Skorpios Island. Unfortunately, he died in 1968 due to respiratory failure. Once again, Jackie was left a widow. Following his death, she resumed her career in the writing profession, but as an editor, first at Viking Press, then at Doubleday. She often wrote the introduction to the books she edited and worked to obtain and lay out illustrations. Jackie also led a very successful public information campaign with the New York Municipal Arts Society to save New York’s Grand Central Station. She even went as far to go to Washington to urge Congress to pass landmark legislation and she also lobbied legislators in Albany, New York, to prevent private organizations from altering or destroying their property if it was deemed historical architecture. She was very much involved in many organizations, such as the Literary Lions of the New York Public Library, the American Ballet Theater at Lincoln Center, the Broadway theater district, and the Central Park Conservancy (“Jackie Kennedy Biography”). Even though she was not First Lady anymore, she was still very involved and helped many people. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis died May 19,1994, in her apartment in New York, New York. She was 64 years old and died due to cancer complications.
