Caring for Carp
The welfare of the carp is something that every carp angler should be concerned about. For some reason there are still anglers about who don´t possess an unhooking mat.
The use of a safety lead system is a must whilst fishing for carp. If a hooked fish gets snagged or the mainline gets cut off whilst playing a fish and it is not able to free itself from the line and lead it will sooner or later die which is totally unacceptable for any angler.
Once a fish has been played out and is ready for the net it should be treated with great care.
A good quality landing net with a soft and carp friendly mesh like the Fox Folding Landing Net or the Hutchinson Springlock net is essential for landing the fish.
When the carp is in the net the landing net arms can be folded together and the carp can then be carried to the unhooking mat.

The bigger the mat the better. On a large mat a lively carp will be much safer than on a small one. Before you lay the carp onto the unhooking mat make sure the mat is wet.
Personally I use the Deluxe Safe Mat XXL from Pelzer which is excellent as it´s well padded , very large and it has an extra cover with which the carp can be covered when it´s on the mat and starts flapping lively. If you have to play and land fish from the boat make sure that the fish is safe on the unhooking mat in the boat. I´ve always got two Hutchinson Be-safe Flat mats on the bottom of my boat. They cover the whole length of the bottom of my Zodiac so a carp that has been netted from the boat and been lifted onboard won´t be able get hurt on the journey back to the bank.
Normally I try to unhook a carp as soon as it is in the boat and then row back to the bank as I think that´s better for the carp (it can´t get tangled in the rig,
The waterways are connected from the Great Lakes to the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, which goes into the Des Plaines River and proceeds to the Mississippi River. The fish are able to travel all the way through these areas. The CBC’s broadcast on Asian carp stated that the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal that joins Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River is the main focus where the fish have entered the Great Lakes.
There are several important factors to consider while fishing this method. Anytime you allow drag on your reel, the lure will lift off the rivers bottom. To compansate, try setting your float 3 to 6 inches deeper than the water yo’ur fishing. The second factor to consider is what size of blade to use. When allowing drag on your reel your blade will speed up, the greater the drag the faster the blade will turn, so you may have to increase the size
Now days times have changed. You can no longer enjoy the things you once could. It has become dangerous to waterski or to even enjoy a boat ride down the river due to the Asian carp. These fish are startled easily by boats, and small watercraft. They can jump ten to twelve feet out of the water causing damage to boats and injuring humans. I have heard of people getting cuts from the fins, black eyes, concussions, broken noses and jaws, and even knocked unconscious from this species of fish. Not only are these Asian Carp causing physical damage, they are wreaking havoc on the ecological system. The main concern from the Asian Carp is the dangerous effects that it is bringing to our ecosystem. As an avid fisherman, this is of great concern to me. This will not only affect me as a fisherman, but also possibly hunters, bird watchers, boaters, even jet skiers and water skiers are
Based on the time of year, there are many techniques used to catch a bass. The most common and favorite among most is the jig and trailer used year round, accompanied by a pitch cast. These movements alone are beautiful in their simplicity. Some who have mastered the pitch cast put a jig and trailer in an area the size of saucer from 50-60 feet away with little to no splash. The pitch involves a slight sway backwards, then a smooth step forward as you use your wrist to swing the tip of the rod forward toward your target. You release the bait from your hand at the precise moment and the bait will glide slowly just barely above the surface of the water to enter quietly at the spot that was being pitched
Another main challenge facing the Great Lakes is the threat of invasive species, specifically the Asian Carp. The Asian Carp is very dangerous to the great lakes if they were to invade the Great Lakes they would have the capability to knock out entire species of fish while having no real predators. The intrusion of this fish has the potential to ruin the lake's ecosystem altogether. Not only would it hurt the ecosystem immensely, but would drastically hurt the 7 billion dollar fishing industry in the United States. The Greats Lake Restoration Initiative has funded electronic barriers in places vulnerable to the Asian Carp, to keep the fish out of the Great Lakes. These barriers have been successful and have slowed the spread of Asian Carp in
However, there is a growing number of fish harvested for domestic consumption (Cooke, 2007). With the motivations of fishing differing, the management of trout are considered when thinking of the quality of life. Considering the fish size, the number of fish caught and the number of attempts; “strikes” as well as the fishing environment can enable the fish population and the sport of angling a happy balance. Thus, the estimates of mortality from catch-and-release are now tied into fishery management. Scientist are discovering that other environmental factors are posing more of a danger to fish than fisherman. For example, the movement of a male fish to a nest can result in “nest abandonment” which can result in the loss of reproduction for individual fish. With the management of catch-and-release, nest abandonment is less likely to
Fishing has been around for a really long time and there is more history that can be found concerning fishing, than there is the vast amount fish that are in the ocean at any given minute. I might be stretching it a bit, but that sure is a lot of history! When you hear the word “fishing” tons and tons of thoughts or imaginations might be going through your mind. Maybe you’re thinking of all the good times you had with your family members catching fish on a boat or how much you love for your favorite, tasty salmon salad to quench your watering mouth. I think of their terrible stench and how they make my gagging reflexes shoot through the roof! Throughout the years of fishing history, there has been good ways of fishing and not so good ways of
Equally important,is what happens if the Asian Carp enter the Great Lakes and what effect they will have on the ecosystem. The entry of Asian Carp into the Great Lakes is shrouded in uncertainty, looking at what they done to the Mississippi and it’s numerous connecting streams and rivers, it could be catastrophic. As they been able to outnumber and out compete many of the native fish species. As well as, the Silver Carp’s defense mechanism being triggered by boat motors causing numerous injuries to fishermen and boaters. On the other hand the entry of the Asian Carp could in fact in some ways benefit the existing food chain and ecosystem. By providing a new food sources to already present species in the Great Lakes.
New experience: Fishing can sometimes be boring, especially when you are using the same type of fishing techniques for years and catching the exact same time of
This rig has resulted in large carp captures from very pressured and difficult venues. Designed for the wariest of carp that’s seen every trick in the book. This rig is tangle proof and ideal for most lake bottoms.
Electric barriers are currently the only things protecting the Great Lakes from Asian carp. This barrier is similar to electric fences in people yards, it is meant to repel the fish rather than actually electrocuting them. It uses a strong electric field to repel the fish. These best work with larger fish. Fish smaller than two inches are able to have easier time getting through the barriers. There are some concerns with the electric barriers these include but are not limited to barges and other large vessels disrupting the electric field of the barriers and able to let fish get through the with the vessel. (Prieur, 2016) Another concern is power outages. Some carp may have already been able made pass of the barriers during a power outage
The unavoidable reality of my sport as a source of spiritual and physical renewal and growth is that it is essentially a matter of life and death for the fish.
Trout can be an oily fish that's in connection with the salmon. It can be found in both water and salt water. It can be a rich method to obtain protein and healthy fat. It is also large rendering it a great fish for game fishing. The trout can be a lazy fish plus it doesn't arrived at the counter easily. You need to lure it with the right tools if you are harbouring any hopes of catching it. To get a highly effective natural lure you have to find the kind of food the trout feed on inside their habitats. These include the insects, crustaceans and small fish seen in the trout's environment. This can take up time and effort. However, you can find these natural lures in the local trout fishing supplies shop. There are so many lures available in the market also it is important that you select one that you will not have a problem in making use of. Some of the techniques of trout tackle are highlighted below:-
In the 1970’s man introduced the Asian Carp (Cyprinus carpio) to the Great Lake region. Their introduction was done primarily as a form of management of aqua culture farms and sewage treatment areas (Watershed Council). The fish were under controlled populations until record floods occurred in the upper Mississippi River system. Once the flooding occurred the species began to spread and destroy the native populations of fish and other aquatic animals.
The theory behind the fixed lead bolt rig is simple in that the unsuspecting fish will uncover the hook bait and, right after a bit of investigation devour the bait and move off. As hook length goes tight the fish will really feel the resistance of the lead which need to result in it to ‘bolt’ off, setting the hook in the method. The heavy lead is employed as an anchor point that is used to ‘pull’ the hook backwards and in to the fish’s mouth as it attempts to swim away.
