Cartels of Violence During our family holiday vacation to Mexico, I was looking out the window enjoying the stunning scenery of the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range in San Luis Potosi. Drinking a Mexican coke and snacking on Mexican candy my dad all the suddenly stopped the truck to a standstill, making my coke fall all over the back seat making a huge mess. Inquisitive of what happened I looked outside and saw a truck flipped over and set on fire with several bullets on the side door. The view of this scene looked like it would have came out of an action movie. As we got closer to the accident site, the Mexican Federal police told us not to go any further. The Mexican Drug Cartels were the cause of this act of violence. The image of …show more content…
Since then the cartel violence have grown stronger and led to an estimated 40,000 deaths and several more people missing. (Hernandez 1) These mass murders are a cause of the government trying to intervene with the cartels operations. Some of the most notorious cartels in Mexico are, Los Zetas, El Cartel de Sinaloa, El Cartel del Golfo and La Familia Michoacána. However, ever since President Calderon’s war on drug cartels there have been many new smaller cartels created due to the cause of leaders being captured or killed. The fight for power and leadership between the cartel members have made several streets of Mexico a complete war zone full of gruesome murders and raining blood. The leader of El Cartel de Sinaloa, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman is one of the most known and famous drug lord of Mexico. He is in the ranks of Pablo Escobar and John Gotti. According to Forbes Magazine El Chapo Guzman has an estimated net worth of one billion dollars in 2009 and estimated to grow over the next couple of year.(Dolia, Forbes 1) All the different cartels control the drug trade from different regions of Mexico, for example, El Cartel Del Golfo controls the region nearest The Gulf of
The arrest of Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman was a victorious circumstance for the Mexican government, who have been closing down on his presence for the recent past years. Mexican authorities began taking down high ranked members of the Sinaloa Cartel including two of Guzman’s main associates. On February 22, 2014, the world’s most wanted man had also been captured. Although the biggest drug lord has been captured, the crime and violence left behind cannot be forgotten.
Recent data, as released by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, concludes that the cartel yet remains as the largest drug traders in the US. In fact, before this arrest, El Chapo himself in an interview with Hollywood actor Sean Penn informed that “The day I don’t exist, it’s not going to decrease in any way at all. Drug trafficking does not depend on just one person.” In fact, experts themselves
For the past decade my family single handedly experienced how violent the Mexican drug war is. We could no longer visit our grandparents or my favorite uncle in Reynosa. On a trip to Reynosa, in broad daylight, a “Mexican transit officer” claimed we had gone over the speed limit and stopped us. He blatantly asked for a Mordida to let us go and not give us a ticket, however my father wanted the ticket because he didn’t want to give away any money to somebody who claimed to be an official. We were scared when he started to threaten he would take us to higher authority if we didn’t give him the money. My father then gave him 150 pesos claiming that was what we had and to just let us through. Another way we experienced the violence was when my deceased aunt, Delia was shot and killed during one of the army and drug cartel fights. She was driving in Matamoros to the store with her friend and their kids, when trucks intercepted the road and started firing at each other. My aunt, Delia instantly died when one of those bullets went through her brain. She was another victim of the cartel’s casualties.
Mexican drug cartel leader, El Chapo, recently escaped from a maximum-security prison by stepping into a shower and then kneeling down into a mile long tunnel. Authorities say the tunnel had light and ventilation and it extended from the prison to a half-built house. El Chapo is the leader of the drug cartel named Sinaloa Cartel. It is said that the cartel trafficks drugs various ways, including by land, air, and sea. They transport cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, etc. “Now a massive manhunt is underway to find Guzman,” Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto said. President Enrique Peña promises that the government will recapture El Chapo and further investigate how he escaped. El Chapo is known as the most notorious and richest drug
As Gallo mentions “In a new 48-page federal indictment, U.S. Authorities charge El Chapo and his top lieutenant, Ismael “el mayo” Zambada, with ordering 12 killings and dozens of other acts of violence to promote the Sinaloa cartel’s criminal activities. The two drug kingpins ordered the killings of Mexican law enforcement agents, members of the military, public officials, and rival drug cartel leaders, the indictment alleges”
Consolidating itself as the leader of drug trafficking in Mexico. The Arellano Felix brothers infiltrated Baja California and created the Tijuana Cartel. Over the years, both cartels developed a deep rivalry, which reached one of its most violent points on May 24, 1993, when both cartels staged a deadly shootout at the Guadalajara International Airport where one of the seven victims was Cardinal Juan Investments
The Cartels have major influence over many small towns and cities as they make sure their businesses compete with the rest of the illegal drug market. The word Cartel means a formal organization of producers that agree to coordinate prices and production. In order for their organizations to remain established, some cartels in Mexico even have the power to bribe the government so that they look the other way. This is a form of Clientelism, which is an informal aspect of policymaking where a powerful patron offers resources such as land, contacts, protection or jobs in return for the support and services of lower-status and less powerful clients. This obviously leads to corruption as well as the cartel being basically untouchable in some cases. The amount of violence that stirs from this phenomena is staggering and many people die from it every year in
Unfortunately, I’m unable to determine which gang or narco-terrorist is the most notorious because they are all on totally different levels. For example, the street gangs such as the Bloods and Crips are terrorizing neighborhoods and they are mostly seen in low-income areas. These gangs tend to recruit at an early age such as teens who are looking for a family environment, have been bullied or a for income. The gangs are known for selling drugs, sex, and many crimes more so against each other. They are both very territorial which means that are certain areas of their neighborhoods that claim to own and they even mark their territory with colors such as red that is mostly known by Bloods and blue that are mostly worn by Crips. For any individual

The cartel has a strangle hold on the Mexican people.
The Mexican government has gained some control over the war against the cartels, with the financial aid from the US, and alongside the Mexican Army. Mr. Calderon, previous president, had a successful plan into crushing these cartels by weakening their positions and taking power away from them. Mr. Calderon’s goal was to destroy the cartels by all and any means. In Mexico’s history, Mr. Calderon during his presidency, he had the most captured, as well as the war against the cartels was maintained under control. By the time Felipe Calderón left office, 25 of the 37 most wanted men in Mexico had been either captured or killed (Krauze). Back in December 2006, when Mexican President Mr.Calderón decided to launch an unprecedented attack against the
The residents of Juarez say the bloody turf war between the Sinaloa Cartel and the Juarez Cartel. In 2006 the Mexican government started performing to shut down drug related operations in order to stop and contain the spread of drugs spreading into neighboring states. Mexico’s drug war, which has raged since 2006 and started within the Presidents Felipe Calderón’s administration, know no bounds. More than 50,000 people have died in drug-related violence since and Calderon deployed thousands on troops to calm the situation down but it has only made it worse. The deployment of the Mexican Army and federal police forces to combat the cartels directly, despite the federal government’s deployment of more than 10,000 federal police officers and upwards of 50,000
The Mexican Drug war has been an ongoing conflict for several decades. Mexico is in an ideal location in a geographical sense because of its place in between the United States and Latin America. The cartels are able to smuggle large amounts of dangerous drugs across the borders, in turn generating large amounts of money. These acts of smuggling almost always produce large amounts of violence and bribery. It is important to look at this conflict not just for what it is right now in the present day, but also at the conflict’s core.
The Oriental republic of Uruguay greatly believes there is an issue regarding the danger of drug cartels. Being a South American Country, Uruguay does know what happens when drug cartels becomes out of control. For example, back in the 80’s, Colombia was basically Pablo Escobar and the Medellin Cartel’s country for a long time until his death in 1991. In more modern times, Mexico is in shambles due to the ongoing drug war between rival cartels. Drug Cartel’s and their campaign for blood and money will never stop until they are effectively dealt with.
