Unfortunately, I’m unable to determine which gang or narco-terrorist is the most notorious because they are all on totally different levels. For example, the street gangs such as the Bloods and Crips are terrorizing neighborhoods and they are mostly seen in low-income areas. These gangs tend to recruit at an early age such as teens who are looking for a family environment, have been bullied or a for income. The gangs are known for selling drugs, sex, and many crimes more so against each other. They are both very territorial which means that are certain areas of their neighborhoods that claim to own and they even mark their territory with colors such as red that is mostly known by Bloods and blue that are mostly worn by Crips. For any individual
The Seville Blocc Mafia Crips are a multi-cultural Crip set located in Eastern Los Angeles. Born from the struggle of poverty, neglect from the government, and general desire to resist the reality that was life in the hood. Originally a group of friends growing up on the East side, the S.B.M.C (Seville Blocc Mafia Crips) were meant to keep a strong bond in times of need. Around the time of the 1980's crack epidemic, violence in Seville rose steadily as well as general crime, and the youth of Seville was no exception to these changes. Introduced through the public school system, narcotic sales became a popular activity in the neighborhood with multiple dealers flooding the street corners with ages as young as twelve and thirteen. Certain neighborhoods in Central America are under the control of various gangs. The women and children are live in a constant state of panic. Women especially fear that they will be attacked. If anyone angers the gang or doesn't pay whatever said gang says that they have to pay to live there they or their children are under threat to be attacked.
There are three different types of gangs. “Not all are dangerous. Some youths just band together, think up a name and try to act tough. But they are learning the art and power of intimidation.” The first type of gang is the hedonistic gang, which consists of primarily social groups where the main focus is partying and getting high. Members may commit property crimes, but not usually as gang activity. If they fight at all, it’s more often for the right to party than for turf. The second type of gang is the instrumental gang. These gangs are more likely to commit crimes against property (car theft, burglary, etc.) than crimes of violence against people. They may do drugs and deal it individually, but their main motivation is money, not power. The third type of gang, and the most serious, is the predatory gang. These social predators commit the violent crimes (drive by shooting, carjacking, murder and organized drug dealing). They are most often affiliated with smaller street gangs. This type of gang often engages in serious drug use, such as crack and crystal meth,
During our family holiday vacation to Mexico, I was looking out the window enjoying the stunning scenery of the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range in San Luis Potosi. Drinking a Mexican coke and snacking on Mexican candy my dad all the suddenly stopped the truck to a standstill, making my coke fall all over the back seat making a huge mess. Inquisitive of what happened I looked outside and saw a truck flipped over and set on fire with several bullets on the side door. The view of this scene looked like it would have came out of an action movie. As we got closer to the accident site, the Mexican Federal police told us not to go any further. The Mexican Drug Cartels were the cause of this act of violence. The image of
The Mexican Mafia, MS-13 and the Little Rock Street gangs all made a way through robbing people and selling drugs. They bullied their ways into neighborhoods, turned to transitional crimes; human smuggling and drug trafficking (Insight crime, 2017).
The organized crime groups that I am most familiar with include terrorist groups, gangs, and mafias. As a result of living in a city in Florida, I have heard more about gangs compared to when I used to live in a rural town in Vermont. I’ve always heard about gang violence and the crime they commit, such as theft and murder (“Tampa Bay gangs,” n.d.). I also know that gangs can be represented by different colors, markings, and often members will have tattoos of the gang logo (“Tampa Bay gangs,” n.d.). Al Qaeda and ISIS are the two terrorist groups I have heard the most about because of how often the groups are committed crimes that are making national headlines. From the 9/11 terrorist attacks to the recent attach on Paris, terrorist groups are constantly committing crime and violence against society (Mallory, 2012). Lastly, I am not too familiar with the names of various mafias, I have only heard about the different types of crime they commit.
Drug cartels appeared in Mexico during the time of the U.S. Prohibition when liquor was smuggled into the United States over the Rio Grande. When the U.S. Prohibition ended these cartels saw a drop in liquor profits so began to use marijuana as a new cheap and effective cash crop. Drugs really started to get going when the U.S. began to clamp down on drugs in the 1900’s (stratfor). And so many of the Mexican gangs that had smuggled other items started smuggling marijuana and other drugs across the U.S. border. Mexican cartels broadly effect Mexico culturally and socially but they mainly effect education, cause people to become desensitized, and create narcoculture.
The drug cartel has been a problem for the United States, as they import illegal substances into the states. There are many different cartels that run in the nation of Mexico. All of them have a lot of power and money. Some of the income of the cartels is drug trafficking, moving illegal substances, or drugs, to buyers in the United States. With all of the illegal movements and events happening, violence arises quickly.
In the United States, the top most wanted gang is the Ms13, a very commonly well known gang. This gang is not just some want to be thug gang in some guy’s basement, trying to act all big and bad when they’re not. This is a very well organized and well thought out gang. “They are known for being a part of selling drugs, human trafficking, murder, contract killing, extortion and kidnapping.” Their territory would be considered Central America and the United States. Their exact location is not certain, that is part of what they do, stay unknown and it’s easier to do business like that. About 70,000 in the United States are members of the MS13. Something that you may have heard of them would be the kidnapping of the son of the Honduras president. (gangs.umd.edu)
The Oriental republic of Uruguay greatly believes there is an issue regarding the danger of drug cartels. Being a South American Country, Uruguay does know what happens when drug cartels becomes out of control. For example, back in the 80’s, Colombia was basically Pablo Escobar and the Medellin Cartel’s country for a long time until his death in 1991. In more modern times, Mexico is in shambles due to the ongoing drug war between rival cartels. Drug Cartel’s and their campaign for blood and money will never stop until they are effectively dealt with.
Comprised of distinct elements that assist in establishing and defining organized crime in small street gangs or terrorist groups are national or transnational criminal organizations. Organized crime groups have an organized structure. These structures include hierarchical structures or other similar structures which establish a clear chain of command. Having a structure provides knowledge of every member’s role in the organization; who gives the orders and who needs to obey and carry out the commands. Further, exclusive membership is typically a requirement. This allows shared trust amongst members of the group. Move over, exclusive membership reduces the risk of infiltration by law enforcement officials and aids in maintaining some secrecy within the organizations and the strategies (Lyman & Potter, 2006). Organized crime operates its illegal trades primarily in the shadows in hopes of drawing little attention from law enforcement agencies who may look to disrupt their criminal activities. Maintaining secrecy is necessary for various operations that organized crime may participate in and may add to the longevity of the group before being targeted by law enforcement.
Journalists have been facing off against the mafia for as long as there have been newspapers and people to read them. They are a key component of the metaphoric, anti-mafia cart. This cart, as Leoluca Orlando, an influential politician of the 1980s says, has two wheels: “…one the wheel of social, cultural, and political reform, the other the wheel of police and judicial repression. Only if both move in unison does the cart go forward; if one wheel moves while the other stands still, the cart spins in a circle without advancing,” (Schneider, 2003, p. 160). Unfortunately, the cart does not move in unison very often, which leads to the demise of many journalistic efforts to speak out against the mafia. Journalists are threatened, assaulted, and
The research demonstrates about how the mafia organized crime structured in society. Mafia is an organized crime who is capable of invading the economy and politics with gaining social acceptance. Mafia is an organization of territorial control and illegal activities like smuggling, weapon, trafficking, and more. Mafia’s groups are also known to provide private security for theft, coercion, and police baiting.
In recent years, the link between organized crime, terrorism, and drug trafficking has become increasingly intertwined. The interactions between these three organizations have facilitated terrorism on a global scale as the activities perpetrated by these groups have demonstrated. These formerly independent endeavors have not only began to collaborate with each other, but discernable trends have emerged due to their collaboration.
Transnational gangs are criminal groups that extend their illegal activities across national borders. Examples of transnational gangs include Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) and 18th Street Gang (Gray, 2009). They are dangerous to local communities where they carry out illegal activities, such as human trafficking, robbery, extortion, murder, rape, and drug dealing. With soaring revenues from transporting and selling cocaine and crack, the inter-gang violence and bloody territorial disputes have spread and grown more brutal. The gangs are not only fighting each other, but muscling in on territories of the well-entrenched drug trafficking transport networks tied to Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel (Farah, 2016).
