The Big House, the largest prehistoric native American structure in North America, is a four-story building constructed by ancient Sonoran Desert people, the Hohokam. The Hohokam were native American tribes that vanished in the 1400’s leaving behind archaeological evidence of a sophisticated culture revealing advanced canal systems, and the “Casa Grande,” a big house in the Sonoran Desert valley. Missionary, explorer and mapmaker Eusibio Francisco Kino, was the first European to discover the site in 1694 and named it “Casa Grande”. After the railroad came through in 1879, travelers would scratch their names into the walls, some took artifacts, even pieces of the wall were taken as souvenirs. In 1889, Congress voted to take action to protect the site from vandalism and looting. It has been protected since 1892 by the General Land Office and then it was transferred to the National Park Service in 1918. This …show more content…
“He recorded in his journal that the Casa Grande is a four story building, as large as a castle and equal to the largest church in these lands of Sonora. Close to this Casa Grande there are thirteen smaller houses, somewhat more dilapidated, and the ruins of many others, which make it evident that in ancient times there had been a city here.” (“Casa Grande Ruins NM: An Administrative History (Chapter 2),” n.d.) From this time onward, the Casa Grande received a notoriety that led many travelers to come to the Great House to behold the work of a vanished civilization and to speculate on its origin and meaning. The Great House has stood up well for hundreds of years considering the environment in which it lies. However, after the advancement of the train in 1879, travelers would stop by and rummage through the site looking for souvenirs. Many would carve their names in the walls and some would take sections of the
Imagine yourself as a young cowboy that has just received a telegram from a man you met during your time in North Dakota. This man was Theodore Roosevelt telling you that he was going to resign as Assistant Secretary of the Navy and help form the 1st U.S Volunteer Cavalry to fight those rotten Spaniards down in Cuba. Being the striking young man that you are you take up his offer and head down to Texas where this new unit will be training for the harsh environment of Cuba. Training in Texas went great, you and everyone else loaded onto a train headed to Tampa Bay Florida expecting to be there in about 4 days. Just as planned you and the other members of the 1st U.S Volunteer Cavalry arrived in Tampa on time. Now is when the unexpected finally hits, the ships that were to carry all of the men and all the horses will in fact not hold all the men, let alone the horses. You sadly had to get the short straw and were forced to be one of the unlucky men that have to stay in the U.S and take care of all the
Located in present day Collinsville, Illinois is Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, which was once home to the largest city north of Mexico from 700 to 1400 A.D. Settled by the Mississippian people, today their decline remains a mystery. First visited in 1811 by traveler Henry Brackenridge and considered the “discoverer of Cahokia” only in the sense that he wrote several papers and articles about the findings to the public’s attention. After walking around the mounds, Brackenridge described that the locations of the last inhabitants were clearly visible to him, as were fragments of their tools and utensils. Many extensive archeological excavations and several case study theories have come about through the years as to why this magnificent ancient metropolis faced such demise.

Native American architecture varies greatly from region to region throughout North America, and was influenced by factors such as climate, kind of community, and the natural environment. Whereas some buildings were designed and constructed for specified functions, others, such as Anasazi great houses, were massive multi-purpose structures. Because great houses from Chaco Canyon are so well preserved, it is possible to have a decent understanding of the structure of Anasazi architecture for analysis. A close examination of the innovative Anasazi great house architecture of the Chaco Canyon region reveals its utilitarian value.
Boca Grande, Florida (33921) has a population of 1,230. Boca Grande is a small town located on the west coast of Florida. The second you get off the plane you can smell the salty waters and fruity smoothies. The dry air and glaring sun on your skin brings me the feeling of warmth and happiness. The bright green palm tree leaves rustling in the wind providing slight shade from the bright golden sun. The sand if full of shells, that with one wrong step will slice your foot. Making your journey down to the water not comfortable. The water is so still in the morning it looks like a painting. Even when it's seventy-five degrees outside the water is still as clear as glass. It’s cold at first, but after you dive under like a dolphin once or twice

We traveled 14 miles to Chimney Rock and it was amazing. This rock is the most famous of all landmarks of the westward migration. Some say it looks like a tall factory chimney. This is what is most written about in pioneers journals. Many put “the most remarkable object that I ever saw” in their journals. It looked like a tall factory chimney or a chimney from a burnt house. Charles described it as a Limbless trunk of a gigantic. Indians called it the “Tepee” or the “Wigwam”. After we pass the Rock, we travel for another 75 miles to reach Fort Laramie. Fort Laramie stood alone the main trail to Oregon and California. Fort Laramie is a emigrant resting place to trappers, traders, missionaries, and many more. The building was built by the Laramie
As it was in the beginning, so it has remained for thousands of years; the natural beauty of Cabo San Lucas is still the magnetic pull that intrigues and invites many to experience what this majestic, modern, sophisticated resort town has to offer. Located at the southern end of the 1,000-mile Baja California Peninsula in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur, Cabo San Lucas is said to have been discovered by Francisco de Ulloa in 1537. Other historical accounts claim that An Englishman Thomas Richie, in 1828, founded Cabo San Lucas. However, thousands of years ago before European arrival, the area was once inhabited by the Pericu tribe. Cabo as the region is more commonly called, has a colorful history that recalls tales of Spanish conquerors, and plundering pirates, who were believed to
There are five rivers in Big Bend National Park: Rio Grande, Santa Elena Canyon, Mariscal Canyon, Boquillas Canyon, and Lower Canyons (NPS). The biggest one is the Rio Grande; which is best known as “Rio Bravo.” This river is located in Brewster County between Mexico and United State border (N.p., n.d. Web.). The Rio Grande has a problem with a lacking of water, which increased the potential for water quality degradation and toxic chemical contamination; the cause of this problem it’s because of the growth of maquiladora plants (N.p., n.d. Web.). The Rio Grande doesn’t affect the park, but basically, the researchers believe that the river upstream was affected by the park. In Big Bend National Park, researchers

The Sky City Cultural Center and Haak’u Mueseum serves as a “gateway to Acoma ‘Sky City’” (Sky City Cultural Center & Haak'u Museum). It preserves the rich cultural heritage of western North America by allowing tribal members and non-tribal members access to Acoma pottery, Native American art and crafts, authentic cuisine, history, as well as lifeway through its museum, cultural center and guided tours through the Acoma Pueblo. It was designated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as the 28th Historic Site, because it is one of the “oldest continuously inhabited settlement[s] in North America” dating back to 1150 A.D. (Sky City). Its history is intertwined with the cultural make-up of New Mexico; therefore, it is a popular tourist destination spot.
As an archeologist, solving the puzzle about our past generations isn’t easy to analyze without written forms of communication. In a perfect world, every important aspect of each and every culture before us would be well documented in written texts. We can however, make inferences and analyze the artifacts and other forms of communication that are excavated from various sties around the globe. There are many different forms of important artifacts from the mesoamerican culture that shaped state authority and control. Mesoamerica is a culture and region in Mexico/northern South America, that existed from 3500 BCE to 1697 AD. Two important cultures within mesoamerica are the Aztec and Maya. More specifically, three examples of these important artifacts are the Templo Mayor, the Maya stelae and the ritual of bloodletting. These are great examples because each presents a different type of artifact and contributes to different aspects of state authority.
