The challenge within the workplace in which I will focus the case study inquiry project (CSIP) are the internal obstacle that occur when encouraging creativity and innovation, while still working with in a state system regulated by classifications, job titles and archaic styles. The Washington State Community and Technical College system, including our college South Puget Sound Community College, has seen continual struggle with the idea of change and technology. We are willing to see our students need for new and innovative ideas, but this has not been as easily accepted by the staff and faculty. The workplace environment of an organization, in this case of the college, plays an important role in creating a culture that supports creative …show more content…
As I continued with this practice it became clearer they had been given no power or authority in their roles. They were not ever asked for their input or suggestions, let alone asked to be creative or innovative. This was not a situation of my staff not being creative, but they had been taught through years of previous management that their creativity and ideas were not important. As the world is demanding more out of us, these employees had been programed to do the exact opposite. I needed employees who could handle change and be adaptive, as Robinson states, “organizations everywhere say they need people who can think creatively, communicate and work in teams: people who are flexible and quick to adapt.” (2011, p.2). This left both my staff and me at square one. Just because we had an organization that had tools in place to foster innovation, this department had never felt supported. “A culture of creativity has to involve everybody not just a select few.” (2011, …show more content…
This was not based on knowledge of critical steps as a manager I must take, but just part of my leadership style and learned from previous experience. As Hallowell explains the most common mistake managers make is jumping in at step 4; “asking people to work harder; without first having created the conditions that will lead workers to want to work harder.” (2011, p.7) Luckily, I have gained the trust of my team by not jumping to step 4 and instead starting with steps that relate closely to

What are creativity, innovation, and design, and how are these concepts important to meeting the objectives of an organization? To understand these concepts they must first be defined. Webster’s dictionary (http://www.merriam-webster.com) defines creativity as the “Ability to produce something new through imaginative skill, whether a new solution to a problem, a new method or device, or a new artistic objects or form. The term generally refers to a richness of ideas and originality of thinking. Psychological studies of highly creative people have shown that many have a strong interest in apparent disorder, contradiction, and imbalance, which seem to be perceived as challenges. Such individuals may possess an

In this case study, first year third grade teacher, Maggie Lindberg, is having trouble controlling her class. The children are well-behaved during their art period. However, when Ms. Lindberg is in charge, they are highly uncontrollable. They talk when they are not supposed to talk and they don’t listen to anything that Maggie says. There’s supposed to be a nature walk/field trip and Ms. Lindberg’s class has yet to complete the task.
The main purpose or mission of the Greenhill Community Center was to provide human service programs for learning, growth, and enrichment throughout life within an intergenerational setting. The mission seems to fill the need in the demographical setting of the location. The center is located in one of the poorest cities on the East Coast. In the textbook it states a mission as being “the reason an organization exists, and it must be the starting point for its planning.” (Worth, p.172) The mission of the center is very sound, but in the process of hiring a new director, I think the mission focus was lost. I saw a couple of incidences of “mission creep“ in the reading. (Worth, p.173) One being the focus the trustees put on not
1. What is meant by the globalization of human capital? Is this inevitable as firms increase their global operations?
In the context of creativity’s stated definition, we will proceed to group our arguments into three themes of factors: cognitive ability, expertise training, and environmental conditions. The human brain is highly adaptable and can continue to develop new cognitive abilities, even past adulthood (Norman, 2015). Proper cognitive expertise and training can help workers produce and operate in ingenious ways (Ginamarie, Lertiz & Mumford, 2004). Finally, the working environment can both motivate or stifle creative output. Managers can influence all three components: expertise, thinking skills, and motivation (Amabile, 1998).

| Thomas, in regards to the line you comment on "innovative changes often originate from lower levels of the organization", I totally agree withthat statement due to the fact that those lower level employees are the ones who are working in the fields, in terms of having their hands on the equipment and having the full knowledge of what improvements are needed in the work field. Innovation often derive from insight and even frustration at times. Good post.

Effective leaders need to be creative and innovative. Effective leaders need to understand that the blood of the organization which they are leading lays innovation and creativity (Swid, 2015). Creation of new ideas can result in programs which are superior to the already planned or established plans. The responsibility of the leadership is to engage appropriate people in the right times, to the appropriate degree but in creative manner. Employee creativity is also enhanced by leaders who are inspirational. Any business
