Based on believe that a gender-balanced companies can achieve revenues 14% more than less diverse companies, and supporting the idea of gender equality at work, Saudi Aramco retain the US corporate culture even after it becomes fully owned by KSA government. This choice makes it imperative for the company to secure a friendly work environment for women and encourage gender diversity. Explore the benefits and challenges faced by the oil and gas sector of the Gulf region in empowering women. How Aramco stood to gain?
Despite all the efforts that was held by private companies in oil and gas industry to empower women and encourage her to enter this field, but private sector still face many challenges because it needs much more support from government and civil society.
For sure, there are a lot of benefits that gender diversity can bring to oil industry, but we have to remember always that on the other hand there are big challenges that we have to overcome, especially when we are dealing with a community where its majority of women don’t have the tendency to work.
As the number of population increased around the world and due to rapid technology development, the global energy requirements and the demand on oil increased year after year. This itself causes a challenge for the oil industry companies, due to the lack of skilled candidates at the time the demand for such professionals and qualified employees is increasing with time, also the lack of suitable replacement for high experienced employees after they retired exaggerate this
Since its discovery back in the year 1858 crude oil has been become one of the most sought after resources on the face of the planet. It is due to this fact that the oil industry has fallen into a rather odd category in the case of globalization and seeking out new markets, new labor and new customers. The reason being that the need for crude oil and fuel is always present therefore the product of oil in its basic sense sells itself and the companies do not have to go out and publicly advertise it in the sense that clothing lines and other commodities do. Oil companies must focus more on the matter of why an individual should buy their oil and along with other alternative fuels over their competitors even though in the end the companies
Findings and Conclusion: This research shows that women are still unrepresented in top management globally. The difference in performance of the companies in the same country and same industry implies that diversity serves a competitive differentiator. Certain companies focus on gender diversity and others focus on ethnic and racial diversity but no company in the top quartile focus on both. Companies which have greater diversity are able to attract top talent, improve internal and external customer satisfaction, improve decision making and hence improve
Over the last century, women have been fighting an uphill battle to achieve gender equality in the workplace. History has seldom been kind to their efforts, which puts them at a severe disadvantage in modern day work environments. Society has created certain stereotypes and gender roles in which women are expected to fulfill, and this has been the main source of the problems women face within the workplace. The types of jobs women typically have and their typical roles outside of the workplace both contribute to the difficulties they face in a work environment. Although strides have been made by women to simplify the process of getting a job, they still face adversity entering certain areas of the workforce. Even after they do manage to get a job, their actual work environment and lifestyle remain much different from a man’s. Among other disadvantages, the most notable is the income gap between men and women. Gender inequality has placed many hardships on women that wouldn’t even be thought of if they were thought of as socially equivalent to men. Even though some positive changes have been made, gender inequality in the workplace is still in short supply.
In today's world women are perceived in the workforce as either less qualified or arrogant uptight. "Approximately 40 percent of students in elite business schools are female, and it is particularly difficult for them to move up the career ladder. A study by the nonprofit organization Catalyst in 60 U.S. top companies indicates that among 500 directors there is not a single woman" (Sinitsa). From an article "Man's world refuses to take women seriously, even in 21st century" we are shown that more than Half of the female talent is are wasted. To allow the female population to grow will be beneficial that will slow the society to grow an advance. Women can be a perfect candidate in the workforce just as well as any

According to the statistics presented in the article, The Problem With Women In The Workplace Is Men, 50% of the US work force is comprised of women (Ferro, The Problem With Women In The Workplace Is Men). This data is simply an “illusion” of equality. The ratio between women and men in the workplace may be the same, but the distribution of men and women are not equal in all fields of work as well as the different rungs of management within specific companies. In fact, according to the article, How Men Drown Out The Voices
Most who have looked into the issue of feminism in the workplace understand that women must overcome many more struggles that men would in the workplace. The article, Engineering Ignorance (2009) states in the introduction that much of the work that women have done seems to become invisible to the eyes of society. It
Many of these occupations and sectors adhere to traditional cultural and traditional aspects, specifically in the United States. The statistics presented lay credence to the fact that women have significantly less shares in certain industries (“Women in Male-Dominated Industries and Occupations,” 2012). For example, in construction, women compose about 8.9% of the industry (“Women in Male-Dominated Industries and Occupations,” 2012). In logging, the number is smaller, at roughly 2.8% (“Women in Male-Dominated Industries and Occupations,” 2012). The industries involving quarrying, mining, and the extraction of gas and oil are about 13.3% (“Women in Male-Dominated Industries and Occupations,” 2012). In terms of occupations, women compose about 0.1% of the “brickmasons, blockmasons, and stonemasons” (“Women in Male-Dominated Industries and Occupations,” 2012). Similarly, women only represent approximately 1.2% of mechanics and automotive technicians (“Women in Male-Dominated Industries and Occupations,” 2012). There are, however, several industries and occupations women remain dominant, however, many of have been traditionally female (“Women in Male-Dominated Industries and Occupations,” 2012). For exampled, approximately 95.3% of all administrative
Although many women in Saudi Arabia are educated, many of them remain unemployed and the income gap continues to exist. Women are expected to fill the low-income positions of the informal market and are often discriminated against when applying for positions of higher status. Moreover, the feminization of family care in the Middle East inhibits women from entering the workforce. “Although many women are educated in the oil-rich countries,
Businesses should see a women’s caring nature as an attribute to their business and adapt their business to become more appealing to a wider audience. Studies have shown that companies that promote gender equality are more productive, holistic, competitive and higher educated, (Workplace Gender Equality Agency [WGEA], 2014).
There are so many different factors that go into the equation of what makes a good employee and a person's sex shouldn't be one of those. There are women who have managed to battle their way into the upper ranks and who have likely worked much of this out for themselves (Bellstrom, Kristen and Zarya 24). This shows us that women are determined to make something of themselves and that they will rise above any stereotypes or discrimination to make the workplace more diverse and equal for all. Robinson was asked how women effect the workplace. “Women definitely bring more diversity to business and a great amount of knowledge coming from a different viewpoint. They also bring a different emotional side to business which I think can be a good thing.” Are female customers more difficult to work with than male customers? “Typically no, not in this business. This is not a retail business. I would say that men ask more questions than women as far as accounting goes. I think this is because typically in the family dynamics of things, men usually handle the financial aspects of things.” said Robinson. In 1974, only four percent of all MBA graduates nationwide were women. In 1994 thirty six percent of the ranks of graduating MBAs were women (Haddock 24). Showing that women are hiking their way up to the top. That number has more than increased since then. Gender diversity in corporate businesses and top management groups has received growing attention from academics, investors, interest groups and professional research firms. Diversity is supposed to be a sensible approach to improve board effectiveness and performance (Labelle et al 1). In recent years, the issue of appointing more women as directors has also captured the attention of policymakers and research on gender diversity in the business establishment. The slow pace at which business is integrating gender diversity has started to get government involved (Labelle
Women have started to become more educated, with an increased number of women attending universities each year. But everyone who has an education is not guaranteed a job, with women taking up fifty four percent of students in universities but only take up twenty six percent of jobs and eight percent of legislators in Lebanon (Davies). Most women did not always have an opportunity to receive an education, but the minority of women in higher classes have been given the opportunity to receive a higher education because of the wealth (PBS). This resulted in the power to ignore gender norms and become workers in both the business and political worlds. Today women are encouraged to find jobs in government to insure them equal wages, treatments, and benefits which jobs in the private sector lack (Islaih). In the Middle East, it is hard for women to obtain property, since the sons in the family inherit the land and it is also discouraged to even purchase land (Islaih). Without access to land it is nearly impossible for women to receive credit cards and take loans from the bank (Islaih). This results in women being unable to start their own businesses because they lack startup capital which limits their chance of becoming successful, and leading by example, to show the Middle Eastern world that women can become the heads of big businesses and succeed.
The oil age has become an age of inequality. The discovery of oil has brought the wealth of a few people, and has brought misery to most people. Many oil rich countries suffer from the distortion of the economic development, the financial instability, the increasing gap between the rich and the poor, the serious
Women have experienced a historic situation of inequality in the social as well as professional aspects. Women were normally the ones that would take care of children, do the chores in the house, and in rural areas; they would work in the field with the rest of the family. However, today’s women have become more self-sufficient and independent from the predominant male figure within every historical family. Gender inequality in the workplace is becoming less common; yet, gender is a factor that affects men and women. Especially women have been subjected to a historical discrimination that has influenced society to decide which job is more suitable for women than men. However women have confronted and tried to break down the barriers that
In the light of this change in the nature of contemporary workforce, the concepts of diversity and equality will be discussed vis-à-vis the reality of women in the workplace. As such, this research will address the following questions: what are diversity and equality policies? Do they work? Finally, do they open possibilities and opportunities for women?
