Merger of US Airways and American Airlines
American Airlines Group Inc. (AA) is the largest airline in the world. They seek to be an effectiveness organization that have better customer service, effective staff, and successful. In the following, the five stages of Organization Development process will use to implement the organizational development change process for the new “American Airlines Group Inc.”:
1. Anticipate a need for change: American Airlines need a new communication channels, create a new mission and policy to have a clear future for the organization, new talented management to adapt the changes and accept the challenge for the new (AA), focus on the financial department to avoid the bankruptcy, and employees training to have an effective costumer service.
2. Develop the Practitioner-Client Relationship: External-internal practitioner team with the cheerleader or pathfinder style. By getting employee motivation and satisfaction, they will be more active and perform on their job effectively, dealing with the client and help them with solving issues, and have an excellent customer service. External practitioner brings expertise while the internal practitioner brings knowledge and aware to the strength and weakness. They provide support for each other, combines more advantage, and less disadvantage.
3. The diagnostic process: SWOT analysis help the organization to identify their strengths, weaknesses, opportunity, and threats for both U.S Airways and American
Delta’s Management team is seeking to strengthen the company’s market and financial position by proposing to acquire American Airlines. An assessment of American Airlines business operations, its resources and environment will identify the company’s operational and financial strengths, weaknesses, possible opportunities and threats. This will enable Delta to recognize the best strategy to create the most effective synergy for this acquisition. Evaluating the SWOT analysis on American Airlines is a core requirement and a key step to assessing the feasibility of the acquisition; detecting its operational and financial factors could have a profound effect that can assist Delta in determining the strategic direction that would be advantageous to the company.
JetBlue Airways, the latest entrant in the airlines industry has gone through the initial stages (entrepreneurial and collectivity) of the organizational life cycle rapidly under the successful leadership of David Neelman. JetBlue Airways is currently in the formalization stage of the life cycle where in it needs to create procedures and control systems to effectively manage its growth. Also as it proceeds to grow further to reach the elaboration stage, JetBlue needs to continue to align itself with the environment in order to maintain its sustained growth.
As the two largest producers in the commercial aircraft industry, Boeing and Airbus have been in a long rivalry for over two decades. Because of its huge research and development cost and a volatile market demand situation, the large commercial aircraft industry has only a few viable producers that can successfully operate in this industry. At the end of 1996, there were three competitors in the industry – Airbus, Boeing, and McDonnell Douglas (MDC). United Airlines and Continental Airlines, two major airlines companies, agreed to a merger that would create the world’s largest airline. Such important deal has a lot of problems to be dealt with, from technical, for example how to put the companies databases together, to more fundamental, like how the company should be ruled.
JetBlue is an American airline company whose headquarter is located in the New York City. They are a low-cost airline who is rapidly growing in the Unites States. According to Wikipedia, “David Neeleman founded the company in February 1999, under the name "NewAir.” Many of their approach come from Southwest Airlines include low prices airfares. However, they differ in the amenities offered to the customers.

As I was thinking about the two companies that I wanted to do for my course project on, I began to research companies on the internet and I ran across the merger between United and Continental airlines. The reason that I choose to do the merger is because I knew that they were going to go through many changes within this merger. Both airline companies have a lot to offer to each other with this merger that they can compete with Delta airlines one of the largest airline in the world. This merger will bring about several changes within both companies. Information systems development: AirTran uses Navitaire as reservations system vendor while Southwest uses Sabre to better accommodates international flights. Also, AirTran uses online travel agencies for ticket distribution while Southwest sells its tickets via telephone and its website.
American airline industry is steadily growing at an extremely strong rate. This growth comes with a number economic and social advantage. This contributes a great deal to the international inventory. The US airline industry is a major economic aspect in both the outcome on other related industries like tourism and manufacturing of aircraft and its own terms of operation. The airline industry is receiving massive media attention unlike other industries through participating and making of government policies. As Hoffman and Bateson (2011) show the major competitors include Southwest Airlines, Delta Airline, and United Airline.
The merger between American Airlines and U.S. Airways is one that can be explained using static game theory models. The two players in the game would be American Airlines and U.S. Airways. Each one of the players would have something to gain from the merger, but they would also have something to lose. In this game American Airlines is our first player. American Airlines’ potential payoff is merging with a company that is maximizing profits, but is also lacking in the customer service department. U.S. Airways is player two, and in this game they are merging with a business that is suffering from chapter 11 bankruptcy, but is excelling in customer service.
Neelman, understanding the next steps in growing the organization, brought together a highly skilled management team to run the company. Neelman providing the necessary strong leadership, along with the talented management team formulated clear operative goals and directions based on his vision. Decisions that were made emphasized the need to provide a better passenger experience such as choosing New York JFK as the home base of the airlines. Customer interaction (external environment) and employee satisfaction (internal) were the important factors in formulating the mission. The Mission statement included Safety, Caring and Integrity that can be attributed to the customers and the mission statement also included fun and passion that can be attributed to the employee satisfaction.
The process of SWOT analysis is a universal method widely approached in corporations to scan the internal and external environment so that companies can deploy relevant countermeasures to make improvements. It contains four elements, they are strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (Helms & Nixon, 2010).

(American), principal subsidiary of Dallas/Fort Worth-based AMR Corporation, was the largest airline in the United States. At year-end 1988 American operated 468 aircraft on 2,200 flights daily to 151 destinations in the United States, Bermuda, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, France, Great Britain, Japan, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Spain, Switzerland, Venezuela, and West Germany.
