Author Cassandra Clare’s Style Cassandra Clare is an author who uses poetic detail, distinctive mood, and detailed imagery to create her bestselling novels. One of her best novels, City of Bones, was the first book of her most popular Mortal Instrument series. Her style towards this book is centered mainly around her extremely detailed imagery which her readers clearly enjoy. Also, in her books there is a lot of dry humor with characters who have sarcastic and otherwise complex behaviors. In addition, there overall story throughout this series, and specifically in the City of Bones, is extremely dark. All of these aspects can be seen in the text of her novels. First off, poetic detail. This does not mean that Clare writes everything like a poet; this means that her novels contain lots figurative and imaginative components. For example, at the conclusion of character Jace’s story about how his father taught him a lesson about how feeling love or attachment is not a positive thing to do, this poetic line is stated: “The boy never cried again, and he never forgot what he'd learned: that to love is to destroy, and that to be loved is to be the one destroyed.” (Clare, 362) This poetic line means that this boy had been raised to stay away from love and to try to do your best to make those who love you loose those feelings. Another quote related to love is stated earlier on in the story: “Where there is love, there is often also hate. They can exist side by side.” Yet another
James Fenton and Carol Ann Duffy are both contemporary poets. Their poems ‘In Paris with You’ and ‘Quickdraw’ both include the themes of the pain of love. This essay compares how the two poets present the pain of love in their poems, exploring things such as imagery, vocabulary and form and structure.
Because love is universally perceived, everyone can relate to the author. The reader experiences a great deal of empathy and slight distress when Nicole, as well as Teague, goes through the experience and effects of her cancer. “Love wasn’t something I felt anymore,” Teague expresses, “It was something I did,” (281). This statement authenticates that he had the truest love for her. He validates this even more so by comforting and providing for Nicole through selfless actions during her sickness whereas others would have given up if the relationship did not attribute to real love. He proved his romantic love, a once inner feeling, through deeds that were physical and clearly apparent. A similar, yet different love, was further
Poetry is oftentimes associated with the subjects of love and romance. Poets throughout the ages have used this medium to express their deepest emotions in the most eloquent of ways. Whether the poet is a man or woman is irrelevant. Poets of both genders have succeeded in expressing a heartfelt love to another with a poetic language that speaks volumes in a relatively short amount of text. Two poets from two separate eras each wrote a poem with just such a theme. Anne Bradstreet in “To My Dear and Loving Husband” and Edgar Allan Poe in “Annabel Lee” created magic by writing these poems that express a love for another that transcends time and place.
In the story “The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle with connections” the main idea of this story so far that I read is that they are going on a boat ride with a family.Mr.Grummage was a y’all man who wore a black frock coat with a stove pipe hat that added to his considerable height. The person that is telling the story asked a lot of questions and obviously had a relationship with Mr.Grummage and they were some what family or real close friends. We can infer that she is a child because in the first chapter she stated that she wanted to say goodbye to her chaperone and she kept saying she had to say good. Some strange man was listening to their conversation and heard that the captain name was Jaggery. The man was scared of the captain because
In the story, True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, the author Avi created an external conflict. A major conflict that was developed in the story was Charlotte not knowing who to trust. A possible theme in the book, True Confessions of Charlotte doyle, is that you can’t trust everyone and every little thing someone said. According to the text on page sixteen Mr. Keetch said, “But it’s my strong opinion, miss, that you should take another ship for your passage to America.” Mr. Keetch warned Charlotte to take another ship because she was the only girl on the ship. Also as stated in the beginning of the story Charlotte was convicted of murder, and the men on the ship were really rude to her. Charlotte didn’t know if she could trust them or not.
In True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle Avi talks about how Zachariah is a low rank and slowly becomes a higher rank though the novel. In these paragraphs it will be telling people reading this about the novel True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle and how Zachariah is a marvelous person. First Zachariah gave a dagger to Charlotte to protect herself. Next he also tried to be Charlotte’s friend. In conclusion Zachariah took a punishment for the crew by being whipped. Zachariah is a great person for his actions.
Laura Murphy is a member of the Lake Braddock Secondary School Parent-Teacher-Student Association in Fairfax Station, Virginia. Murphy is advocating for students at the high school to not read a particular novel. The novel that she is challenging happens to be the Pulitzer Prize winner Beloved by Toni Morrison. Murphy is not only challenging the book, but is also wanting to ban Beloved. In regards to future literature, “new polices are adopted for books assigned” that might have objectionable content.
It’s necessary for people to get out of their comfort zone so you can be more open to change and interact or do different things with people. In the book “True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle”, the author, Avi, explains how Charlotte changes throughout her treacherous voyage on the ship. First, Charlotte has to go on a ship with a crew and captain so she gets used to men more. Second, Charlotte develops a kind of toughness after she is put in many situations like whipping the capattin. Third, after Charlotte’s voyage she goes back to her parents and realizes that she doesn’t want the proper and perfect life. Charlotte changes a lot at the end of the voyage.
In Sarah’s Key by Tatiana de Rosnay, the central theme is that pivotal choices made by individuals have significant consequences that shape their lives. The key Sarah wears around her neck and the baby born to Julia, symbolize both Sarah and Julia’s decisive choices. Julia’s husband Bertrand wants her to have an abortion because caring for a baby would ‘kill him’ and lead to their divorce but Julia chooses to have their baby anyway. After having the baby, Julia reflects on how much she wanted her child. She states, “This child meant so much to me. I had fought for her. I had not given in. She was my victory.” Julia’s choice makes her happy but also leads to a painful consequence. Shortly after the birth, Bertrand summons up the courage
The story “Masque of The Red Death” and “Annabel Lee” by Edgar Allan Poe are very high quality and Mischievous books. Throughout each page both stories had many connections regarding love, life, and many emotional outlooks about life. Annabel Lee and Masque of Red death both implied that there isn’t a boundary that can separate true love which was established from the dreadful events that happened in the texts. Edgar Allan Poe expressed a series of connections between the two texts which gave each text a large quantity of similarities which included Love, life, and casualty.
A poem is a piece of writing that partakes of the nature of both speech and song that is nearly always rhythmical, usually metaphorical, and that often exhibits such formal elements as meter, rhyme, and stanza structure. In her poem, “Variations of the Word ‘“love”’,” Margaret Atwood introduces to her audience the word “love” from many different perspectives. Google defines “love” as “an intense feeling of deep affection”, or “having a deep feeling or sexual attachment to (someone).” But “love” is not something that can easily be described. Atwood goes on to present and portray the word through different illustrations, beginning with cliché examples and ending with her own personal scenarios. The author’s tone and metaphorical language effectively conveys her perspective of “love”.
Stephen King is perhaps the most widely known American writer of his generation, yet his distinctions include publishing as two authors at once: Beginning in 1966, he wrote novels that were published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. When twelve, he began submitting stories for sale. At first ignored and then scorned by mainstream critics, by the late 1980’s his novels were reviewed regularly in The New York Times Book Review, with increasing favor. Beginning in 1987, most of his novels were main selections of the Book-of-the-Month Club, which in 1989 created the Stephen King Library, committed to keeping King’s novels “in print in hardcover.” King published more than one hundred short stories (including the collections Night Shift,
In Safari by Jennifer Egan, Egan brings up the topic of relationships and their structures quite often. Egan even defines many of Mindy’s personal terms, which describe her interactions with others. Such terms as Structural desire, Structural resentment, Structural Dissatisfaction, are brought up often as Mindy describes her relationships with Lou, Albert, and herself. In Safari, Mindy has many complex relationships throughout the text that change and evolve, as she also grows as a person.
Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin was a novel written in times of unrest where slavery was a controversial topic and women 's rights were still suffering. Throughout this paper we will compare and contrast these two characters and give specific examples to illustrate the similarities and differences between these two unique individuals.
In many of Edgar Allan Poe’s crazy and famous stories, love is an important role in creating the plot. Most of his short stories and poems include strong love connections with women, which is what he had with his wife Virginia, a strong love connection. In his poem, “Annabel Lee”, in states, “But we loved with a love that was more than love-” (Poe) This piece of text is clearly saying that the narrator and Annabel Lee were deeply in love, just like Poe and Virginia, who also had a very strong love that couldn’t be separated. Also in “Annabel Lee”, it indicates, “But our love it was stronger by far than the love of those who are older than we-” (Poe) This is showing that the narrator and Annabel Lee loved eachother so much
