Once Upon a Time: Folktale Elements in Eileen Chang’s Short Stories
Eileen Chang was a Chinese novelist who was known for her stories depicting 20th century Chinese life, a time and place in which different cultures collided. Instead of depicting a perspective aligned with either modern or traditional outlooks, Chang’s work manages to reject blanket opinions of whether one is better than the other and illustrates a world far more nuanced and that reflects the mixing of worlds and ideas happening in the modern era. One of the most prominent ways she does so is through the use of folk story themes: Chang uses folk elements to destroy and to satirize dichotomies that the reader may rely on to categorize her stories, in effect depicting a more nuanced China in which opposites work together.

Like “Aloeswood Incense,” the story is introduced by the narrator inviting the reader to listen to his or her tale, as if the story is being told orally. This theme is reinforced later when the narrator switches from present- to past-tense, and cannot decide the age of the story’s protagonist. In addition, the narrator observes that Chuanqing “[seems] to have dozed off” (79). This subjectivity of the narrator distances the reader from the story, but at the same time Chang’s focus on Chuanqing’s inner thoughts pulls the reader into his mind. The effect of these contrasting themes is that the reader is able to criticize Chuanqing’s choices but also to empathize with him, reflecting a balance between the traditional judging of anyone who challenges the social order, as seen in Lu Xun’s “Diary of a Madman,” and the more modern exploration of the self as a reflection of the surrounding
