Cattle Drive Narrative Essay

Does the race/ethnicity of Saint Mary’s students affect the interactions to the Sodexo workers? This question was inspired through a book called, The Hungry Cowboy, by Karla A. Erickson, who participated in her own observations in a restaurant viewing the social interactions among the people in the restaurant. The idea of observing and participating in social observations involved more than just asking people questions or sending out a survey, it is actively being a part of the observation and interacting with others that are also being influenced by the social norms of the restaurant. Race/ethnicity at Saint Mary’s is an issue being ignored by many, but also being addressed in small ways which provokes an interesting concept in viewing interactions among the people who work for the students versus college students who may or may not take it for granted.

Kaitlin Olson, acclaimed for playing “Sweet Dee” Reynolds on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, comes to FOX for a starring role in a sitcom about an irresponsible woman put in charge of her law-dodging sister and her husband. I genuinely got emotional when I first read this passage. When the author, Eric Schlosser visited a slaughterhouse in the High Plains, he describes the sight of cows being lead into the factory. These cows are lead up a ramp and into the factory to be knocked unconscious, then later slaughtered.

Many Aboriginal populations have been using storytelling as a way of communication for centuries. Storytelling is used on a day to day basis whether it be reading a story to kids or telling friends about an experience. The importance of storytelling is highlighted constantly throughout the book Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden and the entire story itself is a recollection of memories. Niska tells stories of her past to warn and teach Xavier. Xavier tells stories of his haunting and innocence shattering experience at war to help him heal. Elijah tells stories about his life before and during the war as an attempt to maintain what is left of his aboriginal culture and to heal himself by reminding himself of his achievements and what he has proudly accomplished . Storytelling plays a significant role in the novel by teaching and helping to heal the characters.

The Day the Cowboy’s Quit takes place during the 1880’s and revolves around the character, Hugh Hitchcock. “Hitch” can only be described as a man of his word, perhaps even to a fault. He enjoys simple pleasures, and idealizes the cowboy lifestyle. Hitch works for the W Ranch, for a rancher named Charlie Waide, to whom he looks up to as a sort of father-figure. At Charlie’s ranch, Hitch and the other cowboys are free to own their own cattle and brand them as such, so long as they don’t steal from him or any of the other ranchers. However, not all ranchers see fit the hands-off approach Charlie takes with his men. Since the W Ranch is only expanding its horizons, the cowboys, and Hitch, although optimistic, and faithful in Charlie, see this free way of life coming to an end. Soon enough, big ranch owners try to force their ways upon the W Ranch, and Charlie resists, that is, until one of his own is found to have stolen cattle. Horses running, bulls bucking, and flame throwing are all thing that you could see at a rodeo. When I was in the fifth grade I went to a rodeo with my girl scout troup . We saved up for almost a whole year. We sold cookies, earned money, and waited for the exciting weekend trip to A.J Ranch.

Rodeo has been around for several decades and has gradually become very popular around the world. The three events that have been apart of the rodeo since the beginning include saddle bronc, steer roping, and bull riding. Rodeo is a great sport for cowboys and cowgirls to compete in an event that suits their lifestyle. These contests have changed dramatically since the first official rodeo in the late 1800’s.
