What does it mean to have free will when one cannot choose the environment in which they live in? Because the environment in which one lives in shapes their beliefs and practices, how is it they are morally responsible for their actions and decisions when they are not in control of the environment they live in? Causal determinism is a belief that everything that happens is completely caused by whatever happened before it. Furthermore determinism implies if the conditions under which one made a choice were precisely the same, one could not have done otherwise (Kamber). While it is difficult to argue against causal determinism there is still freedom to reflect on possible alternatives before acting. Though, the question is not whether one …show more content…
These laws are
1. In the absence of external forces, a body in motion will stay in motion
2. Force is equal to the mass of an inert object multiplied by the acceleration of that body
3. Any external influence on a body causes an equal and opposite reaction from the body
These laws reveal the mechanical properties of the world and these properties laid the foundation for classic mechanics. Furthermore, these properties will always hold true and they coincide with the deterministic theory that the same causes produce the same effects. Ravil Kalmycov, with the advent of the Ring of Determinism, noted these strict laws created by Newton can be generalized to encompass a wide range of phenomena. The laws provided by Newton only encompass inertia which is a mechanical display of internal determining origins. Kalmycov, in order to encompass the diverse displays of this origin, generalized the laws in the following ways:
1. “In the absence of external influences, the separate natural formation retains its condition or continues motion, function, behavior, development under the influence of its own internal determination.
2. The more strongly (of higher power) its own internal determining origin is expressed (developed), the greater external effort that must be applied to this movement (life, behavior, development) to induce change.
3. Any external influence on a separate natural formation causes a corresponding reaction, as long as it keeps
Phill Connors (Bill Murray) was a weatherman from Pittsburgh’s Channel 9 who has been going to the festival of Groundhog Day located in Punxsutawney for the past 3 years companied by his two crew members, Rita (Andie Macdowell) the producer and Larry (Chris Elliot) the cameraman. Little did he know that he would encounter a lifechanging experience in his 4th year. Unfortunately, Phil could not make his way back to Pittsburgh due to the heavy blizzard that occurred so Phil and his crew had no option left but to spend another night in Punxsutawney, PA. Phil woke up the next morning to face the exact Groundhog Day that he encountered yesterday, he used the time loop for his benefit in the beginning but soon realised that he is destined to live
The four restaurant scenes in the 1994 film, Groundhog Day, take an already well-written script and bring the story to life. These four scenes play a crucial role in this film. They convey symbolism, highlight the protagonist’s character arc, and help communicate the theme of the film. This is accomplished through use of sound, lighting, camera angles and shots, costume design, and the actors’ interpretations of the script lines.
“Evolution. It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent-“
essentially asserts that the nuances of one's personality are not generated from within, but rather
There are those who think that our behavior is a result of free choice, but there are also others who believe we are servants of cosmic destiny, and that behavior is nothing but a reflex of heredity and environment. The position of determinism is that every event is the necessary outcome of a cause or set of causes, and everything is a consequence of external forces, and such forces produce all that happens. Therefore, according to this statement, man is not free.
Your geography and you beliefs determined greatly who you are as a person but no one had a choice on that during their formative years. So there are so many factors and causes that affect freewill that’s not under the individual’s control. Let’s acknowledge that. In the context of life being a canvas you can visualize your life as a specific and unique individual pathway on the canvas of life with with different choices(options) available as one moves through time. At each moment in time, different choices are available to you within said predetermined path. The pathway is already predetermined because all time exist at all time all the time, but within each moment you’re are presented with certain set of choices (different set of choices are available at different point in time). These choices range from good to evil as far as their impacts are concerned. So this is why it makes sense to say true freewill doesn’t exist but we can make choices within the predetermined path we find ourselves in. If you think about it from a believer point of view, it’s basically God created everyone differently (predetermined path), with different gifts (drives) manifested through choices available to us at each moment in time. Evil and good are natural forces in this world which
When Phil Connors comes to Punxsutawney, PA to report on Groundhog Day, he is a person of whom Thrasymachus would be proud. Here is some evidence from the movie. In Thrasymachus’s view, happiness is completely derived from the fulfillment of pleasures. Phil follows his appetites, only completing actions for the desires that follow. When he first realizes his situation he begins eating very unhealthy food, drinking, and smoking. As time passes he starts using this repetition of days to learn about people and the town, so that he can get whatever he wants. In one case he uses his knowledge to pretend he knew a woman from a high school English class, making it almost effortless to influence her to sleep with him.
There are three laws of motion. Nancy Hall states that Isaac Newton worked in many areas of mathematics and physics. In 1666, when he was 23 years old, he developed the theories of gravitation (2015). Otherwise known as Newton’s first, second, and third Laws of Motion. In agreement with HyperPhysics, “Newton's First Law states that an object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless acted upon by an external force” (HyperPhysics). Newton’s first law can also be recognized as the Law of Inertia. Essentially, what Newton's First Law is stating that objects behave predictably. For instance, a chair is not going to move unless a force is acted upon
Some things we have can be control but, not others. We try our best to control others, but not all of them we cannot control. Things we control are opinion like desire, dislike, and happiness. It takes time and many chances to change yourself. Our own actions can cause a reaction to another person. In one scene, he is at a bar drinking and he expresses his despair to two drinking friends in a bar. Phil asks them “What if there were no tomorrow?” One guy answers “That would mean there will be no consequences, there will be no hangovers, we could do whatever we wanted. “At first Phil responds with confusion because he thinks he is immortal or god. So, he wants to test it by risks his life by eating a lot of junk food, stealing money, seducing the local women, and having fun by drowning his sense of hopelessness. No matter what he does, even he kills himself multiple times, time will reset itself and he will wake up as if nothing had happened and nobody will remember.
Free Will: “For the most part, what philosophers working on this issue have been hunting for is a feature of agency that is necessary for persons to be morally responsible for their conduct.” (2)
The first matter to be noted is that this view is in no way in contradiction to science. Free will is a natural phenomenon, something that emerged in nature with the emergence of human beings, with their
The movie Groundhog Day is about a newscaster who visits Pennsylvania to cover a story on Groundhog’s Day. He ends up getting caught in a blizzard which sends him into a time loop so he keeps reliving the same day over and over. He tries everything to get himself out of that day, he even went as extreme as trying to kill himself to see if he would still wake up the next day. When he realizes that his action have no consequences on the world around him he starts to get creative. He starts committing unethical acts, like stealing money from a bank, stealing the groundhog, and punching an insurance man in the face. This movie is all about seeking out whether doing morally right actions or morally unjust actions leads to the most pleasure.
Newton’s laws of motion are three physical laws that describe the connection between a body and the different forces acting upon it, as well as its motion in response to those forces. Isaac Newton developed Galileo’s ideas further and developed three law of motions. Newton’s First Law of Motion states that an object at rest with remain this way unless if it affected by a force. Also if an object that is moving will continue at the same speed as well as the same direction until an unbalanced force acts upon it. An example of unbalance force is when a scooter is being driven, the friction and air resistance is going at it, the weight of the scooter is keeping the weight on the ground, the reaction force is going up and the thrust of the scooter going forward. The force’s tendency to resist any change in motion is called an object’s inertia. Newton’s Second Law of Motion states that an object will keep on accelerating in the direction of an unbalance force acting upon it. The mass of the object and the size of the force acting depends upon the size of the acceleration., F_net=m x a, is the formula to work out the total amount of force acting upon an object. This formula can be
A cause must be, at very least, as great as its effect. That is, a cause must have at least the same amount of reality (objective and formal) as the effect it produces.
The law of motions states that gravity accelerates all objects toward the Earth at the same rate. Sir Isaac Newton works were also famous. He made an understanding toward the law of universal
