Internet addiction has become a huge problem in today’s society. In Greg Beato’s article, he discusses the growing phenomena of internet addiction disorder. The writer explains that more and more people are becoming addicted to the internet. For example, he tells of a teenager in Ohio, who shot and killed his mom and injured his dad because they took away his Xbox. He tells how it is stated that five to ten percent of the 52 million internet users were addicted. The author is telling us that the internet has become very addictive in our everyday society.

This article will guide me through my research because it gives a vast perspective into the addictive world. It explains the issues of internet addiction, how it's emerging as a global concern, also how and why the internet has been integrated in our everyday lives.

There are many different forms of gambling. Whether one is betting on a lottery ticket, a horse race, a sports game, or slot machines, to name a few, they are spending money with unfavourable odds of winning that money back. Many people cannot control when they walk away from gambling, as they will continue to bet in an attempt to win back the lost money. In Victoria, in the fiscal year of 2000-01, gamblers lost a total of $14.38 billion, including $2.36 billion on the leading cause of losses, poker machines (11). This can result in problem gambling. Based on different surveys in Canada, it is estimated that approximately 1 in 20 Canadians either have a gambling problem, or are at serious risk of obtaining one. 1 in 20 Canadians adds up to 760,800 problem gamblers (12). In the US, an estimated 3 million people are problem gamblers, and another 15 million are at risk of developing gambling problems (13). Problem gambling would not be as severe of an issue if it only harmed the gambler themselves, as it is their choice to gamble and displays a only a lack of self control. The issue is that people are indirectly affected by problem gambling. It can result in problems with personal relationships, neglect of ones family, bankruptcy, and stress related disorders such as depression, or insomnia (14). Problem gambling also has a positive correlation with crime. This means that the more problem gamblers there are, the more crimes are being committed. Statistics from a published survey show that only 3.3% of responsible, low frequency gamblers have been convicted of committing a crime, while a staggering 28.3% of problem gamblers have been convicted at least once (15). These numbers show that problem gamblers do not only harm themselves, but the consequences have a continuous ripple effect,

Angie shouldn’t overcome her addiction to gambling. Angie was unsuccessful in finding a way to stop her gambling addiction while Rebecca found her way to recover. Rebecca felt her mistake in gambling does; she decided to change her life for the better Rebeca asked the pastor to let her work in the church in her spare time instead of gambling. Based on the research from GamblingRecovery.Org (2016), around 80% of adults have participated in any activity concerning gambling. 2 or 3% out of these 80% have experienced a gambling problem. State agencies and NCPG Affiliates commonly supported services were helplines (87%; 56%), problem gambling awareness programs (85%; 91%) and problem gambling treatment (82%; 26%). According also to the result of the survey, there is a great disparity level between states in terms of problem gambling service investment and problem gambling treatment infrastructure. It is because of the lack of a clear relationship between the number of persons calling gambling helplines and receiving funded gambling treatments and programs.

With the age group consisting of anyone over 21, gambling is a main attraction when visiting a place like Las Vegas. Generating this money contributes largely to make a better city or state for visitors or residents to enjoy. These casinos are usually looked down upon but they offer new horizons for men and women in the United States. Online gambling provides a different dimension of many businesses and also sports clubs. Most of the money from online sports gambling goes towards these sports clubs allowing them to expand their club and the league as one. As gambling begins to grow considerably larger in the United States, it is used as entertainment and recreation. As a whole, gambling allows any given city to grow economically and as whole, it brings in plenty amounts of revenue which also contributes to state taxes.
